New Super Eagle Aina Nominated As Hull’s Best Player Vs Reading
By James Agberebi

Super Eagles defender Ola Aina has been nominated for Hull City Man of the Match Award in their 1-1 away draw against Reading in the English Championship on Saturday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

This was announced by Hull on their verified Twitter handle on Sunday with club fans expected to cast their votes for the winner.

Also included among the four nominees is Nigerian-born England 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup winner Fikayo Tomori.

The other two nominees are Hull scorer against Reading, ex-Manchester United striker Fraizer Campbell and former Arsenal and Sunderland midfielder Seb Larsson.

Aina and Tomori who are both on loan to Hull from Chelsea featured for 90 minutes against Reading.

Aina has played in all of Hull’s nine Championship games since arriving from Chelsea in the summer.

He was in the Super Eagles squad that faced Cameroon in the FIFA 2018 World Cup Russia qualifiers but did not play. He only recently got his switch to Nigeria approved after having played for England, where he was born, at junior level.

Re: The Thread For The Rise Of Nigeria's Next Golden Generation- The Super Eagles+ by TheSuperNerd(m): 9:04pm On Sep 24, 2017
Both final goals came in the 90+3 and 90+5 mins....

Nigeria's was scored by Rabiu Ali.

Homebased Wafu cup final 2017.... Ghana 4-1 Nigeria. (reminds me of that 4-1 spanking Nigeria suffered at Ghana's hands back in 2007 in a friendly) wink

Anyway.. Rohr most certainly is not impressed with most of what he has seen today.

And Salisu Yusuf needs to comb the league and beef up this team and the NFF should expose the team to some good friendlies ahead of the CHAN.... this team at the WAFU cup can be far better than this. But kudos for finishing Runners-up even against the odds. But this team is not CHAN-ready... needs lots of amendments.

Orji Okonkwo Nets Winner For Bologna In Serie A Clash Against Sassuolo

Nigeria youth international striker Orji Okonkwo was the hero for his Serie A side Bologna to power them to a 1-0 win over ten man Sassuolo in a Serie A game decided on Sunday.

Okonkwo was introduced by coach Roberoto Donadoni four minutes before full time and the 19 year old netted the winner for his team on the stroke of full time.

His celebration earned him a yellow card, but the forward will no doubt still cherish the moment as the goal was his first professional goal, and his first goal in the Serie A for Bologna.

Last season Okonkwo made nine appearances for the first team of Bologna after his rapid rise from the youth team to the main team thanks to a flurry of goals for the Primavera team of the club.

Igboun Scores In Russian League Win After Bomb Scare
By Johnny Edward

Nigerian striker Sylvester Igboun is happy to be alive to have scored his second goal of the Russian Premier League campaign for FC Ufa who beat Arsenal Tula 1-0 on Sunday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Nigerian international was the match winner for his side, firing in a 77th minute strike. The goal ended his eight-game drought for FC UFA.

Igboun’s compatiot, Kehinde Fatai, was subbed off for Dmitri Sysuev with 12 minutes remaining.

Igboun prior to the game recounted the security scare at his club’s hotel room before their clash against Arsenal Tula where there was an anonymous phone call with information about an installed explosive device at the club’s hotel (Ufa Park City Hotel).

The 27-year-old with his teammates and officials hurriedly left the hotel according to him.

“It was a very unpleasant situation,” Igboun told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“All the players rushed out immediately, even me I rushed out of the hotel almost naked because we were frightened.”

Harry Maguire, Wilfred Ndidi, and why it's time for Leicester City to make a change

Sports reporter James Sharpe picks five talking points from Leicester City's defeat to Liverpool in Premier League
BY JAMES SHARPE

Here are five talking points from Leicester City's defeat to Liverpool in Premier League

Don't stop, Harry!

Not all that long ago, Leicester City fans idolised over the sight of Harry Maguire marauding into the opposition half, ball at his feet, head up, looking to attack.

City’s new signing had the touch and composure rarely seen from a Leicester defender. Not since Matt Elliott retired.

It was this ability on the ball, as well as his rough, strong defending, that convinced Gareth Southgate to select him in his last England squad.

Yet it was this desire to drive forward that left Leicester exposed against Liverpool. He lost the ball, Liverpool broke and, despite his attempts to recover, it was quickly 3-1.

This is his strength, though, and it should still be encouraged. At the minute, he is Leicester’s best passer of the ball.

Maguire just needs to learn when to do it, while his team-mates must be aware of who needs to drop back and fill in for him when he does bomb forward.

Ndidi needs help

Since Danny Drinkwater’s departure, Wilfred Ndidi is Leicester’s main man in midfield. He’s still only 20. And he needs some help.

Ndidi, as usual, made the most tackles and interceptions of anyone on the pitch, but there were signs that he is in need of a break or assistance.

When Liverpool broke for their third goal, Maguire was 15 yards behind Ndidi. By the time Maguire got back to his own box, he was 15 yards ahead. Even the referee overtook him. It did not look good.

Some context: Ndidi had just produced a couple of long, energy-sapping surges up and down the pitch.

Ndidi is the also the only City player to have started every game, in both league and cup. And he played 90 minutes in each of Nigeria’s two World Cup qualifiers earlier this month.

With the physical demands of Leicester’s two-man midfield, it’s no surprise he looks jaded.

Shakespeare could give him a rest, although Leicester are short of options in central midfield: Matty James is injured, Papy Mendy is in France, Adrien Silva is in the stands , and Danny Drinkwater is at Chelsea. That leaves Vicente Iborra, Andy King and Daniel Amartey as the only other central midfielders. Ndidi is still the best ball-winner.

It's time to change formation

The other option is to change system to help share the burden. The further we tread along this season’s path, the more signposts emerge that point towards it.

Leicester won the title playing 4-4-2. That system, previously thought to be extinct, worked because Leicester had N’Golo Kante and Drinkwater, who did the work of three-and-a-half men, while Shinji Okazaki dropped back to take that up to four.

Shinji aside, City don’t have the personnel for that anymore. They still play 4-4-2. And they get overrun.

Iborra can give Ndidi experienced support, but he is used to playing in a three. Against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, Iborra showed signs of quality but struggled with the leg-work in a two. A three would help both.

Even Andy King, one of few fit central midfielders, is better that way with more freedom to ghost into goal-scoring positions. That's his main strength.

Maguire likes to drive forward, and that works best if there is an extra man in midfield, or in a three-man defence, to cover the space that is left behind. Huge, gaping holes, like the one against Liverpool, are less likely to occur.

Are wing-backs the way forward?

Marc Albrighton has done well there before, at the end of the survival season, and has the engine for it.

The more Ben Chilwell plays, the more convinced I am that he is a specialist wing-back. His attacking prowess outweighs his defensive awareness. Atletico Madrid struggled to handle him in that role.

He would have more freedom, if he had a third centre-back behind him to help cover.

Christian Fuchs could play there too, or as a third centre-back, while Alexsandar Dragovic is unlikely to have been sent on loan to pick splinters out of his backside.

The main question that would leave is how Riyad Mahrez or Demarai Gray fit into that system. Neither have the defensive attributes to be a wing-back, so would have to slot in behind the strikers. If they do, though, that leaves City with a two-man midfield once more.

When Claudio Ranieri tried to change shape last season, the players did not like it. Shakespeare, if he decides to change, must be strong enough to resist any fresh unwillingness.

Vardy needs placement as well as power

“If you’re going to hit it, bloody hit it.” That’s the advice my dad usually throws towards the television when he sees a tentative penalty saved by a goalkeeper. Jamie Vardy bloody hits it.

And it usually works. Other than ballooning one over the bar to deny him a share of the Golden Boot two seasons ago, he had not missed one.
Against Bournemouth that season, the keeper got a hand to one but had been unable to keep it out.
Simon Mignolet did. And, in the end, it cost Leicester a point.
Vardy’s recent penalties have all been struck down the middle. As well as power, Vardy needs to add some placement.

Yusuf: WAFU Cup Final Defeat To Ghana Good For Home-Based Eagles
By Izuchukwu Okosi

Home-based Super Eagles of Nigeria coach Salisu Yusuf believes there are positives to take from the 4-1 defeat his team suffered in the final of the 2017 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Cup against hosts Ghana on Sunday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Stephen Sarfo (brace), Winnful Cobbina and Vincent Atingah scored for the Black Stars while Rabiu Ali’s late strike from a freekick proved to be only a consolation.

“We lost to a good team and they (Ghana) deserved to win because they took their chances and it was a good lesson for us,” the former Kano Pillars coach said in his post-match reaction.

Yusuf assessed the overall quality of football on display in the competition.

“For me the level of the competition was high. This is a good preparation for us ahead of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). I’m not happy we lost but all the same I’m impressed by the performance of my players in this competition.”

In my own honest opinion... I strongly believe Salisu Yusuf needs a refresher course in coaching because he is so archaic and outdated and very rigid technically. He can be better but for now.... he is very very average if not below average. Wish him the best though....

Ian Wright launches defence of Arsenal midfielder: He gets unfair criticism
The Arsenal legend defends Alex Iwobi following his encouraging performance at Chelsea last weekend

Ian Wright has defended Alex Iwobi over some “unfair” criticism aimed at the Arsenal midfielder.

The Nigeria international was handed his first Premier League start of the season at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Iwobi showed discipline to help protect Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin in the goalless stalemate with Chelsea.

The African midfielder was talked up as a promising talent when he burst onto the scene at The Emirates.

However, Iwobi has struggled to kick on over the past 12 months after falling down the pecking order at the Gunners.
But the Nigerian playmaker can take confidence from his professional display at the defending champions.

Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Iwobi has been unfairly scrutinised in recent months.

“Every single player put in a huge shift to earn a richly-deserved draw, including Alex Iwobi, who came in for some unfair criticism in my opinion,” Wright told The Sun .

“He did a real job for the team.”

The north London side will host West Brom at The Emirates on Monday night fresh from three successive home wins in the Premier League, the League Cup and the Europa League.

Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a top-four spot.
The Gunners will welcome West Brom to The Emirates in the Premier League on Monday night.

Revealed – Why Leicester City Ace Ahmed Musa Is One Of Rohr’s Favourite

The calls for the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr to drop Leicester City forward Ahmed Musa from his squad for the upcoming crucial World Cup 2018 Qualifiers tie against Zambia has become louder than ever.

Rohr has included Musa in all of his squad since taking over as coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, despite the limited game time the forward is currently enduring at Leicester City since his move last summer.

Musa saw a deadline day move to Hull City fall through on transfer deadline day, leaving him with no choice but to remain at Leicester City where he is yet to get a minute of action for the first team this season.

However he played for the U23s and picked up two assists against their Chelsea counterparts, but his bit part role at the club has lead to calls for him to be dropped by the Franco-German coach.

” Musa is no doubt in danger of losing his spot in the national team. Rohr loves him because he is very popular in the dressing room, well respected and loved by his team-mates “, an aide to the coach told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” The fact that he is not getting games at Leicester City is a big worry for the technical crew. On the pitch his pace helps the team when we want to play counter attacking football and he is very dedicated to the course of the team, but for now his form isn’t the best.

” It’s up to the coach to decide on calling him up, and the last time I checked he belong to an exclusive list of senior players in the team which the coach love to have around the young players”. He concluded

Friday Eze Sets 17-Goal Target In Turkey To Force His Way Into Gernot Rohr’s Sqaud

Konyaspor of Turkey Nigerian striker Friday Eze says he is confident he will be able to score 17 goals for his team, which will help him force his way into the plans of the senior national team coach of Nigeria.

Eze opened his goal account for Konyaspor in their win over Akhisar Belediyespor last weekend, and the 24 year old who was voted the best player in Serbia two seasons ago, and also finished as top scorer same year in the league while playing for modes side Mladost Lucani is eyeing more goals.

The power playing forward who stands at an impressive height slight over six feet, says he believe he wil catch the attention of coach Gernot Rohr if he scores 17 goals this season.

” It’s not easy trying to break into the Super Eagles, because the team is currently on a high, and the new coach has kept them together for close to two years . Sadly for me those years I was in the Middle East”, Eze told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” I’m back in Europe now and after my first goal last weekend, my target is 16 more to make it 17, which I believe will be enough for me to at least catch the attention of the coach , maybe after their qualification for the World Cup”. He concluded.

The World Cup takes place in the summer in Russia next year, the country where Mikel’s long term girlfriend and mother of his twin daughters Olga hails from. That alone has added extra motivation to Mikel’s desire to lead Nigeria to the tournament.

Already he has returned to full fitness for his Chinese side
Tianjin Teda, but he is still doing extra drills on his own to improve his fitness ahead of the game against Zambia in Uyo.

” The World Cup 2018 is special to Mikel. He has started extra drills ahead of the game against Zambia. He wants to lead his team from the front, and the best way to do it is to be fully fit”, his intermediary told Owngoalnigeria..com.

” He (Mikel) is getting games in China on a regular basis for his club, but he still does extra fitness and tactical drills strictly for the sake of the game against Zambia, which he expects to be a lot faster and more physical than the league games in China”.
