THE ASABA MASSACRE

The Federal troops entered Asaba around October 5, and began ransacking houses and killing civilians, claiming they were Biafran sympathisers. Leaders summoned the towns people to assemble on the morning of October 7, hoping to end the violence through a show of support for "One Nigeria." Hundreds of men, women, and children, many wearing the ceremonial akwa ocha (white) attire paraded along the main street, singing, dancing, and chanting "One Nigeria." At a junction, men and teenage boys were separated from women and young children, and gathered in an open square at Ogbe-Osowa village.
Federal troops revealed machine guns, and orders were given, reportedly by Second-in-Command, Maj. Ibrahim Taiwo , to open fire. It is estimated that more than 700 men and boys were killed, some as young as 12 years old, in addition to many more killed in the preceding days.
The bodies of some victims were retrieved by family members and buried at home. But most were buried in [mass grave]]s, without appropriate ceremony. Many extended families lost dozens of men and boys.
Federal troops occupied Asaba for many months, during which time most of the town was destroyed, many women and girls were raped or forcibly "married," and large numbers of citizens fled, often not returning until the war ended in 1970.

SUSPECT:

Ibrahim B. Haruna has sometimes been named as the officer who ordered the massacre, following a report of his testimony to the Nigerian Human Rights Violations Investigations Commission, known as the Oputa Panel.

That's why the country is moving round the circle. The wickedness against the innocent.

Senselessness at its peak. You're denying and shying away from history. No wonder, Nigeria has not learnt anything from the past.

After the Maj Taiwo Ibrahim ordered the massacre of innocent civilians in Asaba, he did not live to reap anything good. Taiwo Ibrahim was dragged out as a common criminal and shattered with a machine gun during Dimkas coup.

We warned them. The best thing GEJ did for this country is the FOI Law. And the first victim of the Freedom Of Information bill/law was GEJ himself. It allowed citizens to criticize anyone with reckless abandon. It also revealed alot.

PMB benefited from the FOI but now his administration is almost returning to a military dictatorship...Witchunting people and making desperate attempts at muting our expressionism.

As an Igbo man, Anytime the issue of Asaba Massacre is raised, I am always torn between pity and laughter. I pity them because Human lives were wasted, and I laugh because Igbos in present day Delta state came out to show SOLIDARITY to enemies of Biafra ...... their brothers and were massacred.

We should be discussing the innocent women and children biafran soldiers raped and defiled under ojukwu.
Or those they killed in the SS of today for declining to be part of biafra.

Rubbish!

Ehn!, biafran soldiers were saints o, it's only the Nigerians that did wrong. They didn't suffer any casualties either, only biafrans

"When you are crying because you were hurt in a fight, it is meaningful to see what your
opponent also suffered.
When you insist that you alone suffered, you
might need to be informed you are not alone in suffering.
When you use your belief that you alone suffer
to try to compel people to behave as you want,
those other people need to go out of their way
to educate you.
Propaganda driven by some Igbos who have not
recovered from the defeat of Biafra wants to
compel Nigeria into a position of sole or central
responsibility for the horrors of the Nigerian
Civil War of 1967 -1970.
This effort at compulsion is accompanied by
threats of violence, vengeance and prophecies
of doom for Nigeria.
One of these efforts at forcing others to behave
as these people want is the loud cry that they did not
commit any war crimes.
Biafra is thus depicted as a saintly enterprise
and Nigeria as the absolute devil"

At Abudu, over 300 bodies,
including those of children,
were found in the Ossiomo river
as the Biafrans withdrew. [46]
Similarly, on 20 September
1967, 'there was a mass killing
of non-Ibo MidWesterners at
Boji-Boji Agbor', and on 23
September, 'non-Ibo speaking
MidWesterners were
apprehended by rebel soldiers
at Asaba, Ibusa and Agbor and
taken [in two lorries] to a
rubber plantation along Uromi-
Agbor road and massacred'.[47]
The more minor cases of rape,
extortion, seizure of properties,
and other punishments
featured abundantly.
For instance, a Warri-based
lawyer, E. K. Iseru, testified at
the Tribunal that he was
stripped naked and detained
for three days without food for
agitating for the Rivers State,
and, when he complained of
hunger, he was promptly told:
'there is no food for Hausa
friends'.

When war is fought, definitely their would be casualties from both sides military and civilians. But what is very important after war, is to avoid it repeat by any means. Revealing who kill who all the time will not bring peace.
