The street music of a failed state cannot be different from the warped psyche of the people.

The Nigerian music industry is not booming.
Majority of the artistes are suffering since the industry collapsed years ago.
The few people who are posing and posturing as "I have made it" hip hop artistes are living in Fools Paradise.

Bankers can afford to live in Ikoyi and (not in the BQs) and young turks of the Nigerian business world can afford condos in the US.
But can you mention only 10 of the hip hop Nigerian artistes who can afford to live in a N150 million house in Park View Estate or any of the GRAs?

The highest paid actor in Nollywood was only paid about N3 million (less than $30, 000) and their biggest pay was when Globacom contracted some of them to promote their products and services. Over 90% of them are poor struggling actors and actresses.

The fact is most people in Nigeria love fooling themselves in desperation to catch up with the Joneses while the few who belong to "The real McCoy" class are not noise makers on air.

Many young hip hop artistes in Nigeria or what they call rap wannabes in the US come to our office looking for opportunities.
One of them suddenly collapsed and died last month whilst online and that was the end of all his efforts. Rumours circulated that he was into Yahoo-Yahoo Internet scams for a sponsor who makes his millions from scams.

Studio engineers and DJs who do not know what a chord is are now producers.
The result is the "try your luck" hip hop music of retards on air in Nigeria.

Forget all those ajegunle guys that just wont take time to study the kind of music they put on the streets.
Anybody with an empty paint bucket and doesnt have a cold is a musician, and im supposed to use my money to buy such arrant crap?
over my dead body.
soon the system will flush em out
Re: I Am Ashamed Of Naija Retarded Music by eldee(m): 5:11pm On Apr 04, 2010
@Orikinla

You're bringing a quite interesting angle into this.

In my opinion, Nigerian artists are getting what they deserve for their input into society.
Afterall, it should be more about passion and affecting/expressing emotions and not money.
Do you consider a system like America where people get paid millions just for being the face of a message a good one??
I actually think that's extremely wrong . . . and I'm being as modest as the word goes here.

In my opinion, saying musicians should be able to buy N150mill houses, says more about our moral state than our music.
How many doctors and lawyers in Nigerian can afford that comfortably??

In my own opinion, relative to the state of the country . . . hiphop artistes/public figures in entertainment are earning enough for what they do.
It will be unreasonable (as it already is in Europe and America) for them to earn Jay-Z figures for making music, moreso in a country where doctors still struggling to make ends meet.
Wealth with contentment is great gain.

Some people are simply snobs. They just like to peer down their nose at others.

I would rather have ten thousand terry G's than some of these graduate/turned armed robbers in Nigeria. I rather they be exporting so called "retarded music" then transporting drugs. I would rather them show scantily clad women in their videos than selling their sisters/daughters to pimps to go to Italy and do worse. Their choices, although you dont agree is an admirable one, given the numerous criminal activites they could have chosen instead in Nigeria.

Even their American counterparts cannot say the same for themselves, look at Jay Z's path into music, how about Snoop or T.I , even Akon is an ex inmate.

When some of you fall of your high horses, you may see it from their another angle.
Re: I Am Ashamed Of Naija Retarded Music by Krayola(m): 6:25pm On Apr 04, 2010
@ orikinla.  the topic of this thread is about the quality of music made, and not about the financial status of artistes. What does your opinion of who is "keeping up with the joneses" have to do with the quality of music? So what if they come to your office to beg for money? Is your argument that they pretend to have money, beg at your office, and therefore they can't make good music? I don't think u have a point to make. If u do I've missed it.

@ desktop. Is ability to make good music a function of what neighborhood ones resides in? Ajegunle boys must not make music? Ok,  Sir. Infact if one's daddy does not have mazidees one must not toush mikerofone. Haha these people no go kill me  grin grin

These same ones have the nerve to call the Psyche, or worldview, of "street" nigerians warped? Oh,  The irony.  I wonder how many of u are the best at whatever it is u do? I bet u are all on top of ur game. . .   or how else could u consider doing anything for a living?  grin what a mockerylization of common sense.    shocked

I listen to Slick Rick now and I swear, Eedris Abdulkareem will outrap that negro.

Thats the most retarded statement on this entire thread.

Bedtime Story was one of the first storytelling raps that introduced 'dark humour' into the genre.

A groundbreaking rhyme.

Im not taking sides as rightly said before musical taste is subjective, personally I find a lot of Naija Hip Hop annoyingly formulaic and unoriginal but there are also people who break the mould and come up with originality and creativity which I respect.

Oh and just for the record my musical tastes are extremely eclectic.
Re: I Am Ashamed Of Naija Retarded Music by eldee(m): 7:28pm On Apr 04, 2010
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Retarded?? Here we go again with these wiki people.

Of course it might have been groundbreaking, that doesn't mean it won't be crap in this day and age.
My problem is when people say Nigerian rappers are not good enough and hail people like Slick Rick as the gods of rap.

Leave sentiments aside . . . I'll name ten Nigerian rappers that are better at rapping than Slick Rick, are you on it??
Re: I Am Ashamed Of Naija Retarded Music by Henry005(m): 8:27pm On Apr 04, 2010
To say Terry G makes bad music is not being fair. What u call good music depends on d individual listener. For example my granpa in d vila wud only develop hearing probs from listening 2 some of your western music icon. However, play 1 of d native songs which most of u(moi inclusive) cant stand n d old man wud do a dance worthy of applause. We cant all go d same way where taste in music is concerned. If u must know I'm not crazy bout MJ n altho I luv Redman,Eric Sermon n Busta,I cant stand JayZ's music. In d home front I luv Asha,Omawunmi n Dagrin's Pomponpon.2face n Terry G not so much.Mode 9?naaa,I'd go 4 MI n Pherowshuz instead.

its very wrong of u to call our music retarded. There's no standard or yardstick for measuring good music. U can choose to express yourself in wateva way thru music. One man's good music is another mans trash. I dont like Terry G myself and that's it. Mode 9 is whack to some and Terry G is someone else's dopest artiste.
Now go get an I-pod, make a playlist out of your best tracks and move on. Did you consider how many people will read this? You know we are trying to re-brand.

Too bad i came in late.
@ poster. I never knew people still express naija music the same way i do. A good example of a retarded artist mentioned here is TERRY G. What are all these non sense music for? Back in the days i thought music have to do with good rhyme, beat, lyrics and message. I have tried so many times to like an atom of instrumentals/lyrics of Terry G's sh*t but never find one. What is this Free Madness all about? Am so tired of all these crab my ears listen to.
As far as naija is concern,
1. i will always rap about devil shyt, sex, drugs, rape, porn, alcohol, weed and robbery since good music no longer mean to us.
2. I will never add naija trash to my collections except for the dope ones.

no tupac wasnt a voilent psycho

he was a holy saint

he introduced love and affection to hip hop

he was responsible for the education of many and encouraged drug dealers off the streets

he was a strong advocator of safe sex and was know to spread love throughout the poverty stricken areas of the west coast

he was always a gentle and loving man who wouldnt hurt a fly talkless of rape and underage ldy

i mean 'death row records' such symbolism of patritism and love for thy brother

how did i indeed label him as a voilent psycho

i mustve been blinded by his list of good deeds to humanity

and should definitely stick to the romance section cos my ignorance is overwhelming

You don't have to keep blaming Nigerian artists because they produce what majority of d people always want to hear in order to have a good market.
If good songs can make meaning to the majority then lets see what the future tells in nigerian music.

I'm not much of a fan of Naija music ,naija hiphop to be precise. but this problem is also common everywhere. look at guys like Wacka Floka , Souljah boy,Gucci Maine - wack guys are just getting money. I'm now tired of criticising because it is a matter of choice.
Re: I Am Ashamed Of Naija Retarded Music by Abagworo(m): 10:25am On Apr 05, 2010
one thing many paople fail to understand is the importance of beats and melody.that is terry g and timaya's secret.lyrics and content is important for mature minds.if one makes an album with solid lyrics and contents but poor beats and melody,it will definitely flop.2face's unstoppable is a good example.

I think this is as superficial as one's opinion can get. I think everyone is entitled to an opinion, but it's important to know when u have an uninformed opinion. Tupac was no saint. . . But I think misrepresenting someone's life in the name of scoring cheap points in some petty nl debate is a kinda low.

Btw, your hero, Beethoven, was a   nutcase himself. Great musician, but not exactly someone whose conduct u would Want your kids to emulAte.

Maybe we should keep all nl intellectuals in the romance section. That way they won't injure us with all their deep insight and brilliant analyses.

how did i misrepresent his life??- did u not see all his good deeds that i have listed?? did he not do all these good things?

its chiogo's surprise at the fact i labeled him a violent nutcase that led me to point it out?? inno she was tryna be funny but im unsure she knows much abt the life of ur great mc himself

then again its nothing to do with his life as it is with his music- reflection of the same

im not tryna score any points- and just statin the facts

i apologize- it was very ignorant of me to label him as a violent psycho- he was in fact the black messiah

due for ressurection soon sef!  kmt

even friends i grew up with - with no known musical talent are filling my inbox with their tracks. But then again thats the Nigerian music industry for you where anything can pass as music.

Imagine such lines as , Nwakego you fine well well o, which makes up 90% of a track. Such rubbish
