I am from Edo State and currently based in Yola, Adamawa State. Every day, I hear one tale news or the order concerning how peace has suddenly vanished from Benin.
The other day, a US based medical doctor was gun down right in front of the Specialist hospital, while the security men at Prison post adjacent the hospital where looking helpless.
Ukeke and Erejiro, Benin based Edo film actors where sent to their early grave by killers not long ago.
As much as I praised the effort of Oshiomhole in revamping the fortunes of the State, he has failed woefully in the area of SECURITY of lives and property.
Never in the history of State has insecurity moulted to this level. Even during the terror reign of Anini, he was after police men not helpless citizens.
The short tenure of Prof. Osunbor as Governor of Edo State witness a peaceful era, as the Special Anti Robbery Squard (SARS) where up and doing.
I heard that Oshiomhole is currently recruiting militias in preparation for his re-election plans for 2012. Why can't he for once take welfare of the people as topmost priority? Every day, he keeps saying godfather this godfather that. Is godfather also responsible for this bastardly acts of criminality?
If women in labour cannot be spared in this new dimension of terrorism in Edo State, how can ordinary Citizens walk free in the streets of Benin again without fear of harassment or molestations?
May the Almighty God save Edo State.

It is grieviously beyond sadness that one could conclude that this heinous crime could only be perpetrated by demons in human bodies, who came into this world without being born

Robbing a woman in labour! This is disgusting and beyond human comprehension.

I feel like throwing up! Very sickening embarassed embarassed embarassed

Re: Benin City; Armed Men Invade Labour Ward by hbabe(f): 3:17pm On Apr 11, 2010
This is a higher dimension of robbery. Benin used to be a peaceful city with low crime rate so what went wrong? I am shocked to learn that robbers visit hospitals to rob the sick and go to labour wards. The state government should improve security in the hospital and especially the maternity and labour wards to save defenceless women from these attacks. Imagine attacking a woman who is in labour, as if she doesn't have enough problems already! Na wa o

When the lion starts to eat yam, there is need for urgent attention. I still don't want to believe that these men came in search of money. If we dig deeper, we may hear the truth behind that visit.

I dont think there are issues that sinister about the robbery.
Information is that they have been attacking other wards in the hospital on a regular basis. Even the chief matron made this known to the edo state house of assembly speaker days before the attack on the labour ward. This labour ward attack was the one that attracted media attention because it was so reprehensible.
The thieves have been getting away with it because:

1. this hospital is a soft target; you basically have sick people with scared members of staff
2. there is hardly any security. I have worked there before. What calls for security is one or two "old soldiers" with arthritic spine who can hardly open the gates for motorist.
3. the state government in its blind drive to redesign the city centre moved all the bus stops with the motor park touts to surrounding areas. One of this is located just adjacent to the hospital. This move no doubt has left the hospital even more vulnerable.

My proposed solution is bolstered security in the hospital. The police should set up a station within or very close to it. This is what they have in UNIBEN and the UBTH. This move would serve as a big deterrant to intending robbers.
Re: Benin City; Armed Men Invade Labour Ward by Nobody: 1:55pm On Apr 13, 2010
one would have thought the fear of catching sickness would have been a bigger deterrent to armed robbers?

shocked shocked
Is this for real? Don't they have pride? Stooping so low to steal from a hospital? Pregnant women? What if it was their mother, sister or wife? Then again, I suppose they'll sell their mothers for bread.
Helpless women who are going through the pain of childbirth now having to be traumatised and the community can't do something about it. Tufiakwa. Our forefathers will be turn in their graves if they see the state of the country now.
I am disgusted and saddened. Has Nigeria become this bad?
My heart bleeds for the country. I cry in pain and shame for the nation that's supposed to be the "GIANT OF AFRICA" cry
I am disgusted.
