THIRTY

As if recorded, a vivid imagination played in Hadiza’s mind. Imaginations of how close she was soon going to be with nature.

She would soon using leaves as medicine, drinking from streams, eating fresh vegetables and fruits and doing away with phones and computers.

The imminent adventure thrilled her. She was going to see those things she had only ready in books and saw in movies. The thrill subdued her worries.

Instead of imaginations of romance with nature, Jaye had worries all over his mind and face. He wondered how Hadiza would cope with the crude life of the wild. With no medication, internet, electricity, sanitary facilities.

He feared for their lives but what could he do? He had gotten a stubborn coward for a woman.

The journey from Lipakala junction Park, Ondo to Okeruku village heightened Jaye’s fears. Buses and cabs didn’t ply the road so it was a motorbike journey.

He felt unsafe right from the beginning as the road seemed too good for the bike man who sped above normal speed. He couldn’t tell whether to be further frightened or relieved as they went out of Ondo town into the villages.

The tarred road stopped at the first village, Litaye and a road of red and brown earth emerged. A road that was as narrow as it was wide and filled with ponds, ditches, hills, rocky terrain and of course pockets of smooth terrains to go with.

Timber carrying trucks grinded past, leaving messy, marshy earth behind them and smaller vehicles and bikes

struggles in their wake. Bike men wore rain boots and supported the bikes with their legs.

The man who carried Jaye and Hadiza had a mouth which ran as much as his bike did. He didn’t stop talking, giving useless information as well as useful ones.

It was from him that they learnt his bike was one of the latest Haojue Suzuki in town, they learnt a lot too about the lifestyle of villagers, the behaviour of the road they currently plied. It dried up during dry season and was very motor-able and menstruated during the rains.

By the time they got to Okeruku, they had learnt too much about the village itself. Using one of the bike man’s useful information, the first person they met was the village head, whom everyone referred to as Oloja.

Almost after a week, they seemed to have settled well. Jaye’s fears had disappeared. There were actually semblances of town in the village, though a village was always a village.

It was crude. People got network to their mobile phones using antenna attached to a pole, bulbs were lighted with generators, traders brought drugs from town and there were one or two government built primary health care centres around.

Hadiza did not have it really close to nature as she had imagined but she ate fresh fruits and vegetables, she ate roasted yams and games.

Not so bad for them only that Cenz followed them all through and knew where and what they were doing. They should have their peace while they still could.

HELLO... HELLO! MONDAY IS HERE... COM'ON!

Thirty One

Chief Barnabas appeared to have ignored the messy issue of Ali and his supposed fiancé but the truth was he had not forgotten nor forgiven. He only had to do what needed to be done, move on with his quest to become a senator.

He floated radio and TV adverts, posted campaign bills and lobbied influential people. Bank manager Ken at this point had full control of his blackmail plot. Only he had the knowledge of the subjects’ whereabouts. His man,

Cenz had gathered more information about why the subjects were on the run and it all added the numbers up for his grand plan.

He was now ready to invest big into this plot, if that was what it took, he was sure to reap the benefit unless Barnabas wanted to give up his quest for power.

He had earlier tested the waters with an initial move but Barnabas threw his offer back in his face. He was sure his boys would nap them this time.

Being the con man that he was, Ken was not let down by the rejection of the offer instead his resolve was further strengthened and he promised himself that Barnabas would come back begging for the same thing he had he rejected. Only then he would get it but at a bigger price.

He instructed Cenz to keep keen eye on the two runaways as well as the two men Barnabas had so depended on and the watch paid off.

By the time X-Ray and Domino got to Oke Igbo. They did sniffing around that Cenz had earlier done and located the apartment but found no one in it.

“They will still come for the belongings” X-Ray said wondering who had tipped them off. True to X-Ray’s prediction, they did come for their belongings but not in person.

They sent a bus to bring the stuffs to the village. It still looked good for X-Ray and his partner. They would simply tail the vehicle and it would take them to where the ‘fugitives’ were.

Cenz was the killer of death. He tailed the men who were supposed to be expert at tailing. His only instruction was to keep the subjects out of Barnabas’ grasps.

Now he had been made to arrange for them to leave the country all together, under new identities to effectively remove them from the powerful eyes of Barnabas. Ken would finance it. No matter what it took, the more he put in, the more he would reap.

_ _ _

As Jaye and Hadiza slept and woke in the luxurious hotel home where they had been lodged since their yet another escape from Barnabas’ boys, they recounted the experience of the past two days.

Jaye couldn’t tell whether to blame Hadiza for insisting on running to the village or him for obliging. He was certain though that he had made a wrong call the day he sent a bus to pack their belonging in Oke Igbo.

People who came to unseat them in the village must have followed the bus but luckily, they were helped by that man, what did he say he name was again? Zaccheus.

Hadiza had no regret over the decisions they had made. If they had chose otherwise, they would have been caught by the ever spreading and powerful tentacles of Chief Barnabas.

He was a business man before politics with huge influence in almost all strata of the society. He had the resources to snatch them via official and unofficial means. The best way was to avoid him.

Instead of regret, she nursed fear and doubt in the current position of things. She wondered what the real reason was for that man to be taking that much interest in them.

He had provided for their accommodation and feeding since the escape, ensured them that the only way to escape Barnabas was to go far away to a country where Barnabas would have no influence, his boss would finance everything. He was doing only one reason. Barnabas was his political enemy who he wanted to frustrate.

Cenz’s explanation didn’t entirely convince the couple but they gambled it anyways. Twelve days after the escape, they left Akure via Lagos, Nigeria for Luton Town, England and heaved deep sighs of relief.

Finally they were out of Barnabas’ grasps, they would forever be grateful to their mysterious saviour and his equally mysterious boss.
