Resource curse. Since that revolutionary, Hugo Chavez died, Venezuela has been on an economic descent.

Venezuela don cast.

Nigeria is very peculiar. We are almost in the same situation with them but we turning out better after oil prices picked up again, at least comparing both countries.

Same way we survived, albeit with pains the same economic situation that upturned Argentine economy and sent the entire country into deep recession they are still battling.

There is something you failed to take into consideration which is our inflow from diaspora. We are "lucky" not because the government did anything different but because of families living abroad.

Diasporas saving Nigerians since 1912. grin

Oil is a curse to 3rd World Nations

How is Nicolas Maduro's socialism working for them?

Venezuela seems to be the only South American nation hanging on to a socialist system that has outlived it's usefulness

Yo can't compare Nigeria to those countries because most if their dealings are real but that of Nigeria is fake. Our Government is fraud, cosmetic Economy from time immemorial, imposed recession.

That's what happens to countries that spend all their money subsidizing petrol to ridiculously low prices instead on investing in infrastructure and the people.

Whenever Nigerian government wants to remove subsidy, most people say the government is useless and they should go and see how low petrol prices are in Venezuela. Shey na im be that na!!!

No, we are not in the same situation, Nigeria has never been a socialist state which distributes free food and money
to its citizens. Nigerians have always worked to feed themselves.

Don't take everything at face value. A picture speaks a thousand words, but out of the thousand words which one is actually true?

"The perception outside Venezuela is completely at odds with the reality on the ground. The whole ‘failed state’ thing – it’s just issues in economy being blown up. Unemployment in Venezuela is only 6.6%, foreign debt payments are being made on time. GDP is rising.

Venezuela is not in an economic crisis, it’s in an economic war.

Of course there are problems from the fall in oil prices, but all the things being portrayed in the media are created by the opposition – the violence, the shortages. There’s an attempt to create an opportunity for the western, mainstream media to say ‘this country is screwed’ so it can be ‘rescued’.
( Sounds familiar..Iraq, Libya ?)

But it’s not the government screwing up the economy – that’s being done by big corporate monopolies. It’s not the government instigating the violence that’s originating with the protesters, who are backed and even paid by corporations and even outside governments. And it’s all for the purpose of overthrowing democracy, not saving it."

PMB saved Nigeria from this mess. We were practically facing the same issue, If not for a prudent President, we wouldn't have survived it.
Now all the growth indices are in our favor and things are picking up.
Nigeria should show appreciation.

This is the kind of crisis the Buhari administration has averted and saved us from experiencing but many here are too dumb and blinded with hatred to appreciate PMB's effort - makes me wonder how foolish and what they'd be saying now had GEJ's squandermanic and lootocratic continued in power.

the only reason Nigeria didnt get to this absurd level under the current government is because Nigerians are very hardworking people and scattered all over the world bringing in foreign currencies that made us not to feel the brunt much.

even Nigerian youths in Nigeria tried, especially the bloggers, freelance workers and those working online, they helped to keep Nigeria's economy afloat under the current regime, if not, Nigeria would have been worse than this Venezuela.

Venezuelans are lazy, thats why their case is this bad, the whole country rely on crude oil export

Mother Earth! I saw these shits coming during the time of Hugo Chavez! The rhetoric and nationalization of the oil industry and other industries led to the carcasses of economic suicide in Venezuela ! He(Chavez) was led on my both nutcases of Iran's Ahmadinejad and Cuba's Castro. Venezuela was oil dependant and body deep in debt to international monetary bodies. May God help Maduro the truck driver to eschew selfishness and lead the country to a fair and free election

Thousands of desperate Venezuelans are trying to enter Colombia in a bid to escape the hunger and soaring crime rate caused by the spiralling economic crisis.

Incredible pictures show the mass exodus of refugees crossing the Simon Bolivar international bridge trying to flee the political crisis threatening to engulf Venezuela.

Colombia along with its neighbour Brazil has sent extra soldiers to patrol their porous border with the country after officially taking in more than half a million migrants over the last six months of 2017.

The country is also tightening its border controls in a bid to stem the flow.

The dire economic conditions have led to lawlessness in parts of Venezuela's capital Caracas, with truck drivers subjected to 'Mad Max' violence as looters target heavy goods vehicles carrying food.
