500,000 women indulge in abortions yearly, says Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello

Chairman, Senate Committee on Health Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, said in Abuja on Wednesday that more than 500,000 women indulged in abortion annually in the country.

Bello, who said this at a news briefing on the forthcoming mother's night dinner, noted that 34,000 women died from complications due to unsafe abortion, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

"It has been estimated that over 500,000 women resort to induced abortion every year in this country. Of this number, 34,000 women die from complications from unsafe abortion annually," she said.

A study conducted on the incidence of induced abortions in Nigeria by some experienced physicians, who included Boniface Oye-Adeniran, Isaac Adewole and Ngozi Iwere, at a nationally representative sample of 672 health facilities in Nigeria that were considered potential providers of abortions or of treatment for abortion complications, showed that each year, Nigerian women obtain approximately 610,000 abortions, a rate of 25 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44.

Bello called on the Federal Government to provide family planning opportunities for women, to prevent unsafe abortion.

She also noted that the nation's maternal mortality level might have a failure rate of 545 per 100,000 pregnant women, which, she added, was reported in the last National Demographic Health Survey.

"We still have a lot of work to do to achieve the reduction by three-quarters set as the Millennium Development Goals," Bello said.

According to her, the United Nations Fund for Population Activities has estimated that about two million women are affected by fistulas in the developing world, out of which 800,000 are resident in Nigeria.

NAN reports that on the occasion, awards will be presented to persons who have contributed to the improvement of maternal mortality in the country.

The beneficiaries are former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso; Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau; wife of the governor of Ebonyi State, Mrs. Josephine Elechi; Mansur Kabir; and Dr. Abba Wali.

Oh my lawd!  And that's just the "official" number!    

Why not ask Iyabo how she got that number?. How many of the abortions can be attributed to her.


Also, 500,000 Nigerian politicians are criminals except innocent Iyabo.

During her imposed reign as a Commissioner of Health, veterinary technician Iyabo Obasanjo personally stole a multi-million dollar World Health Organisation fund donated to Nigeria for the refurbishment of hospitals thoughout an entire state. 

With that proven charge of criminal embezzlement hurriedly dropped and buried thanks to the the influence of her kleptomaniac father who was president at the time, Iyabo is once again free to waddle her hideous 500 pound bulk down the corridors of power, ululating manaically and issuing pompous pronouncements designed to re-establish her relevance in the frenzied food chain of criminal avarice that is Nigerian politics.

That figure is quite minute. Out of a population of 150 million, I've seen some people who commit more than one abortion annually. I believe that more than 1.5 million abortions are carried out in a year.
