At the end of the joint press briefing by President Trump and our own President Buhari, Donald Trump actually delivered the greatest takeaway from the event of yesterday which no one is talking about. As usual our young population whom it should bother most have been carried away by the sensational, engaging in mindless cursing or celebrations depending on which political platform they stand, while allowing such an economy impacting statement to slip by.

Donald Trump had said that the key point of their discussion yesterday was the opening up of trade to allow the inflow of Agricultural Products from the United States into Nigeria. This he stated had previously been impossible. He believes that this move will benefit their farmers first(increased earnings), and will also benefit the people of Nigeria and Africa as a whole(Increased Choppings). The above also Indicates a strategy of penetrating the Africa Market through Nigeria as a key economic player in Africa.

The Impact of this move on Nigeria will be more devastating than productive, I stand to see no economic benefits in this arrangement for Nigeria. We have over the years tried to shut our borders against the importation of common food produce that we can grow here or have alternatives for. Sad thing is that most of these products come at cheap prices that will displace our local farmers and farm produce, with attendant health concerns due to preservatives and pressure on our lean foreign earnings and reserve. Above all, this will rather act as a disincentive to our Agriculture for exportation drive currently gaining momentum in Nigeria.

I stand as a lone voice in the dessert to plead that this policy be rescinded or reviewed to capture the best interest of Nigeria. The African Agricultural Market has been our forte for years now, we can't afford to loose it to western capitalists, who will spare no efforts in overtaking the continent on its own soil.

No need to worry. Make your goods competitive it’s a global economy.

I’ll buy American beef for any price than Fulani beef stained with the blood of The people of Benue.

No be today we begin see lone voice. Nnamdi Kanu is a lone voice and all this one Nigeria die härds are almost committing suicide over his ambitions.

Go and sleep abeg.

Any small thing.....liar mohammed and audu ogbe(agriculture minister) claims agriculture is the biggest sector this administration has invested in by saying billions of naira.....if so why do we need to import from us.....instead of exporting our locally manufactured products to the usa.

If there's anything to import is definitely not agricultural products.

Nigeria has rice farm....cocoa and plaintain plantation.....tomatoes....cucumber....carrots....water melon and other things that can b exported....instead of importing them to compete with our local production.

This trade agreement is just a way for buhari and his family members launder money massively.

And d hypocrite was busy chanting buy Nigeria to grow Nigeria earlier........eye service @ it's peak.

OP,

What exactly is devastating about U.S importing food into Nigeria?

Haven't you seen that Nigerian farmers are unable to produce food due to herdsmen attacks.

So many farmers have lost their crop yields. Some are dead and buried. Some have even totally given up on farming after being displaced by herdsmen.

We need to import food or we will experience starvation with our rapidly growing population.

If this is true, GMO products should be the concern. We have enough health issues with bad or unaffordable medical services to deal with already.

Importing products that can lead to serious health issues like cancer and the likes should be a No No.

When I saw that picture of Trump smiling behind Buhari as he was signing a paper I instantly knew that signature can only mean more money for Americans.

Who made all these things you listed so? Whose incompetency and pure ethnic bias made it difficult for farmers to freely go to their farms?
Will importation of food solve our problems?
Trump just used the dullard.

Only for things that we don't produce in Nigeria and only for things that will be cheaper than local substitutes in Nigeria. Our exchange rate already protects Nigerian farmers.
US will also grant Nigeria many export incentives and guarantees for say cashew, cassava derivatives, cocoa, yams, et.c
It will be fight to finishing on maize, soy beans and rice.
