as if MTN dipped their hands into your pockets to steal from you. It is a game that only a very few will win. obviously they are taking advantage of the desperation in Nigeria but no one is being forced. Remember, in 419 the scammer and scammee are both at fault. the scammer for the obvious and the scammee for being greedy and expecting zillions from pennies.

Chairman,
You and i knows that this is totally a fraudulent process right from day one. The likes of Madoff that recently got sentenced in the states for their PONZI schemes did not also force people to invest in their bogus investment schemes. But when they were found out, the law rose up to protect its citizens(some of whom had borrowed and invested what they probably could no longer repay in their lifetime)

Cities like Vegas are virtually built on casinos and rolling dice but thats because you know what you are in for, and nobody complains even when you gamble away your future generations there, but corporate social responsibility demands that you don't put up a game that ultimately becomes a lottery when you are not a registered lottery company.

I am still saying it, why did telcos move away from genuine promos like the good old BOGOF (buy one get one free) or recharge #1000 and get free #50, because a genuine promo that is not pure lottery should be able to deliver basic value to the customer with the additional hope of the promo winnings.

If my country leaders are what they ought to be, we won't just be talking about banning the promo here, we would have been talking about class action and possibly, some people smelling the rod.

Hopefully we will get there one day! Ignorance is gradually giving way to consumers understanding their basic rights.

But how is this thing a Ponzi scheme? The winners are published, there's no magomago. We even get the likes of Phillips Consulting, KPMG, and Alex Forbes to do the random selection for us. Una just dey yarn opata for here jare.

The only issue is with the lottery commission. Now, telcos are being asked to get a lottery license, or partner with licensed lottery operators.
As per the random text messages, take time out to read the T&C on the operator's website. When we sell you a SIM, we are legally allowed to send you any message, so long as we're not sending on behalf of a third party, and we are communicating about our services. So next time, just ignore the messages. I know say tkb wan go Old Trafford, he fit don go recharge 100k for im dormant glo line grin

So you are one of the people scamming Nigerians in the guise of promos. Before i explain what a ponzi scheme is, i will also need to explain what a promotion is.

Generally, promotion is communicating with the public in an attempt to influence them toward buying your products and/or services.

Now how can you term what you people are doing as promotions.

Now here is the definition of ponzi scheme;

A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation that pays returns to separate investors from their own money or money paid by subsequent investors, rather than from any actual profit earned. The Ponzi scheme usually entices new investors by offering returns other investments cannot guarantee, in the form of short-term returns that are either abnormally high or unusually consistent. The perpetuation of the returns that a Ponzi scheme advertises and pays requires an ever-increasing flow of money from investors to keep the scheme going.

So you see your company is collecting money from people (without creating any value)to reward a few and then keeping the chunk.

If it were in another country you guys would be in jail by now. Can your company try this nonsense in any other country?

As per the text messages, first i sign no contract nor was i made aware of any contract that would allow you to disturb my peace - even a 5 am in the morning. Even if such a clause was attached to owning a sim card, it does not give you the right to harass costumers they way you have been doing.

You got it wrong bro. The issue is not whether it is genuine or not, because you can easily give out #2m daily out of probably #50m raked in.

The big issue is why service delivery companies will turn around, because of the large customer base they control and with easy/free access to them, instead of delivering their core services, start offering full time lottery. It is criminal because it is done in subtlety as it takes a discerning mind to sift the game plan.

There are so many well defined lotteries going on in the country today and no one is raising an eye lid because what you see is what you get. they come to you as a lottery game and you decide to play or walk.

I had raised this alarm long time when this fraud started and nobody was asking questions.
You know you gave up after seeing the bubble was burst.

If the telcos decide to register as lottery companies too as you have claimed, so be it. But at least by then, Nigerians will know they are entering into lottery games with their eyes wide open.

I still want to see the telcos pants sued off grin  grin  grin   grin  grin

God will punish MTN. After extorting more than N2,500 worth of airtime from my line - in the name of MTN 2010 World Cup Naira Splash Promo, i refused to play again, with high hopes that if i play up to that extent, they will AUTOMATICALLY qualify me to their unexisted price money of hourly N20,000, daily N2million and monthly N20million, they are still asking me to send only 1sms to put me in the draw. Right now, i have 24970points. Isn't that enough to qualify me? Nigeria is 100% corruption-infected country.
Re: Federal Government Stops G S M Lotteries In Nigeria by Brownteeth(m): 11:47pm On May 28, 2010
guys, the problem here is the frequent unwanted and disturbing texts sent by these operators. the promo is simply voluntary. these network operators should look for a way to advertise their promos and should not be through sms.
Re: Federal Government Stops G S M Lotteries In Nigeria by bidemi12(m): 12:36pm On May 29, 2010
aside the text messages (which i agree is annoying), did MTN force anybody to participate in their lotteries/games. better looking into a mirror to question your greed and desperation. Why dont you claim that the USA visa lottery is 419 too. millions apply from Nigeria but less that five thousand people actually do get the visa's. How about that?

MTN literally cannot be said to be putting a gun to our heads and telling us to send them N100, but there are lots of ethical, moral and even legal issues about the way they have been carrying out their promo sorry lottery nowadays. In the US and EU, Microsoft was taken to court and fined for unethical business practices because they were using their dominance to stifle competition. Martha Stewart was sent to jail just for having inside info on stocks and trading based on it. Here she would receive accolades for being smart.

You see most Nigerians are in a state of desperation ( that is why our churches and mosques are always filled to the brim) and taking undue advantage of that without providing any service is morally wrong.

How can you compare US lottery visa to the MTN scam? First the US embassy did to ask anybody to pay one cent to apply unlike MTN in their dubious promo that tells you to sent N100 to apply. Then the US Government aptly named the program for what it is - A LOTTERY, and not a promo. Finally, they specified right from the beginning that they are going to reward N5,000 Nigerians and N55,0000 people world wide, please tell me how many people MTN promised to give 20,000/2,0000 or 10,000 and how many have they given, also let them tell us how many people they have collected N100 from.

That is why we will always remain backwards, we invite others to ra.pe us while remaining docile and even blaming ourselves instead of the people exploiting us. I am sure some people will fight to defend MTN's right to exploit us.

'Scammers' even though they do not force their scams on the gullible deserve punishment. This started right from the garden of Eden where the Serpent also got punished for luring the gullible Adam and Eve into disobeying God. 419ers get punished for plying their trade. What's the difference between MTN and such bad guys?

Obviously you have never met anyone who has been to a visa lottery interview before. I know people who paid more than 500k as visa/application fee and were still not given the visa. I am not faulting the process (I am a beneficiary of it) but my point is we all went into it with our eyes open. same with the mtn/lottery game shows. Why complain now?

who wants 2b a millionaire is atleast not a fraud, after one entry, no one cajoles to play again, dis mtn prmo is a big big fraud, its even more dan yahoo yahooo, in more civilzed climes, the company will be pulled in for sharp practices, av never participated in any of dia phoney promotions cos av always known they r fraudsters, but wen i saw a txt from dem about dis one, my curiosity gave in. i sent go d their sms short code, i tot i would go straight into d draw, dy now sent me a txt dat i shd send anoda sms to take me in, ditto, i did only for dem to say i mwas one sms away from d draw(no, not even draw, away frm d jackpot). i went out bought credit n sent again, dis time dy said i shd send my name so i woukd get dia jackpot, i did, only for dem to send me dis txt, ' apache, na so e easy to win N2million just ike dat. send one more sms n win ur jackpot', imagine, dy said that in pidgin after i had spent mpre dan N800, i was mad and deleted their annoying mesages, dat was a month ago, dy still kip send me txt to send one more sms to dia short code to win 'tonight draw.' assholles ders is worse dan even fraud. i spent N800, some people spent even more. if averagely, a subscriber spends N1,000 before ge runs away and lets say about only 20% of dia customers play dis game (lets 8million), they would av made N1000 x N8,000,0000.00 ie N8billion from this promo, den they will now give out about N200million in prices, see office!
