Monday, May 31, 2010 Ex-naval chief's wife orders arrest of employee's wife, kids [img]http://odili.net/news/source/2010/may/31/punch/images/pix201005313211329[1].jpg[/img] Akin Oyedele and Fidelis Soriwei The relationship between Mr. Steve Midalah, an Abuja-based computer engineer, and the wife of a former Chief of Naval Staff, Mrs. Treasure Samuel-Afolayan, was cordial despite the fact that it was a master-servant relationship. Ex-naval chief's wife orders arrest of employee's wife, kids Between 2003 and 2006 Steve was the Personal Assistant to Afolayan. But the once sweet relationship has turned sour following a disagreement over a parcel of land belonging to the former chief of naval staff's wife in Abuja. After Steve could not be located to explain what happened to Afolayan's land, the former President of the Naval Officers' Wife Association allegedly stormed Steve's children school in company with some naval ratings and policemen on April 27, 2010. The children, nine-year-old son, Favour, and seven-year-old brother, Marvel, who attend Trinity Day Anglican Nursery and Primary School, Gwagwalada, Abuja, were allegedly abducted while class work were still going on and were put behind bars at Gwagwalada Police Station. More than one month after the incident, the children, who referred to Afolayan as "mummy" said they were still traumatised by their experience and had vowed never to trust anybody again. Favour told PUNCH METRO's correspondents that, "One day, Mummy (Afolayan) came to our school when the school was about to close. She asked me whether I knew her and she asked me to mention her name and I said I knew her as TJ's mother (Afolayan's daughter). "She told the people outside that she wanted to take us to our house (about five minutes journey to the school) in order to know the place. So we went to our house. But my mother was not at home. She now kept two policemen in our house. "We turned back from the house to go and look for my mummy and we met her on the road. That was how they took all of us to the police station. We spent one day (night) at the police station. She said that if they tell us to come back home (release us), my daddy is not going to show up at the police station. "My daddy now sent some of his friends to the police station (to bail us), but they refused to allow us to go. So, we slept there in our uniforms. "But my daddy still refused to show up the following day. When we came back home, they said they will transfer the case to Kuje (police station). My mummy spent three nights in Gwagwalada and four nights in Kuje." In an email sent to our correspondents, Steve said the problem started in 2006 when he lost his modest building in Kuje to the demolition squad of the erstwhile Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. He said as he was preparing to move into his new house also in Abuja, he was involved in a ghastly motor accident that made him insolvent. "I met Mrs. Treasure Samuel-Afolayan through my bosom friend, Joseph Anokam, her brother. I was Anokam's Best Man when he got married" he said. He said that his inability to settle his hospital bill made him to sell his new house. Although he was silent on the contentious land in issue, Steve said his refusal to continue to work with Afolayan after his recovery from the accident was the major issue. "The woman has been haunting me and my family asking for N3m for a land she voluntarily gave me, but I have told her I don't have money yet and even reminded her that she did not pay me for the services I rendered to her," Steve said, adding that Afolayan should seek legal redress if she was sure of her fact. Paulyn said she cohabited with maggots and crawling reptiles when she was detained for seven days, adding that she went through a most dehumanising experience for her husband's transgressions. "It is obvious now that there is a threat to my life and that of members of my family. Let her stop using military personnel to harass a civilian and his innocent wife and children. I hereby appeal to all human right agencies to come to the aid of my family and stop this injustice against us," Paulyn said. However, Afolayan said she neither harassed the Midalahs with naval ratings nor influenced their seven-day ordeal in the police stations, adding that the development was provoked by Steve's betrayal and ungrateful posture. Afolayan said, "I have never seen an ingrate like that. This was a boy I entrusted with everything I had. How could I have helped somebody and the person now turned against me? It was not navy men that arrested his wife and children. It was the police and I cannot be held responsible for their detention. "The police said they were looking for the man, because I had reported him. It is true I went to the children's school. But it was the police that arrested them. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/may/31/839.html |

This story full of holes and has been painted to make the con guy who abandoned his wife and kids in detention look good. I am not saying the Navy woman is a saint but to say the least one thing I have Been able to deduce in this story is that the root cause of their problem has Been carefully omitted. It doesn't take rocket science to tell that their was a Sexual relationship between the two of them. Some one was shagging the other,or they were shagging each other if not how do you explain a woman dashing someone land in abuja. Is it beans ? |

There is nothing more useless in this world than the Nigerian Police. Arresting kids from school? For what? May God punish the Nigerian Police Force. Amen. |

i went to school with the Afolayan boys and remember that even then the father came to school to because the head boy slapped the younger son(cant remember his name). this was a boarding school and as you all know head boys have such powers legally so dunno y he had to intimidate the head boy so by coming there with his armed escort although they did not harm him eventually. it is wrong what the woman has done this time |

I just pity the innocent boys but why are the Afolayan woman and the former PA not forthcoming on the main cause of this problem? |

tonte: if she still has the original document for the land, why would she permit the arrest of innocent children and woman? I think there are more to this story. The real issue is not in the open yet. |

¶1. (U) Two local newspapers reported on March 22 and 23 that a 50-year old female civilian, Gloria Ekeh, was shot by Chief of Naval Staff Afolayan's security detail. The newspapers reported that Ekeh's car collided with one of the Naval Chief's escort vehicles, causing an accidental discharge by one of the security personnel. The papers reported that Ekeh was shot in the leg and immediately taken to the National Hospital in Abuja by a Naval vehicle. She was reported to be recovering, with all treatment costs borne by the Navy. ¶2. (S/NF) This incident occurred in the vicinity of the Embassy and was witnessed by a highly-trained and experienced TDYer from the Office of Defense Cooperation. His account differs greatly from the public account put forward by Navy Headquarters. The ODC member came upon a motor vehicle accident involving at least one GON vehicle on Maitama Avenue, across from the headquarters of the State Security Service (SSS), on March 18 at approximately 1545Z. The ODC member saw 2-3 individuals in police custody in the rear of a security vehicle, and a woman, stooped down in a submissive posture, pleading with a uniformed police officer. The ODC member then heard a single gunshot, saw the woman lying in the street, and saw a non-uniformed individual returning a pistol to a holster concealed under his suit. The uniformed police officers did not react to the shooting in any way other than to try to clear the crowd away and to move the woman to a car, which was driven away. The ODC member could see that her feet and legs were covered in a "massive amount" of blood. The ODC member was then ordered to leave the area by a hostile, non-uniformed individual who threatened to "flatten the tires" of the ODC member's vehicle (which had diplomatic license plates) if he did not comply. ¶3. (S/NF) Neither Navy Headquarters nor Chief of Naval Staff Afolayan has made any public comment disputing the events as portrayed in the press. Post intends to consider Afolayan complicit in this extrajudicial shooting, and to bar the Chief of Naval Staff from participation in any USG-funded security assistance events. |
