After Buhari accused Senate of inflating states’ payable debts, lawmakers reduce approval for Taraba

December 20, 2018
QueenEsther Iroanusi

The Senate has reviewed and approved N22.2 billion (22,254,062,330.08) as a refund to Taraba State for projects executed on behalf of the federal government.

The lawmakers had initially approved N34.3 billion for Taraba on December 5.

The new approval comes barely 48 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari accused the National Assembly of inflating debts to be repaid by the federal government to deserving states.

Mr Buhari’s letter, whose content has not been officially denied by the Senate, also showed that the December 5 approval for Taraba was not reflected in the approvals sent to the president for assent and implementation.

The president said the National Assembly did not approve any reimbursement for four states; Bauchi, Delta, Kogi and Taraba despite that the Federal Executive Council had approved reimbursement for them in the details sent to the lawmakers.

In his letter, Mr Buhari asked the National Assembly to review the amount it approved as debt repayment to the states.

The debt repayment in promissory notes is for projects executed on behalf of the federal government by various state governments.

A promissory note is a debt instrument which one party promises in writing to pay a determinate sum of money to the other, either at a fixed or determinable future time, under specific terms.

In a motion sponsored by Francis Alimekhena (APC, Edo North), he explained that the increase which led to the initial approval of N34.3 billion, was as a result of additional road projects executed by the Taraba State Government on behalf of the federal government submitted to the Senate committee – which was not captured in their submission to the House of Representatives.

“Taraba State was among the states that benefited from the approved payment of outstanding bills of 34,315,232,396.96.

“The increase was as a result of additional road projects executed by the Taraba State government on behalf of the federal government submitted to the Senate committee which was not captured in their submission to the House,” he said.

He thereafter, asked that the Senate resolves to rescind its earlier resolution of the payment of outstanding bills of N34,315,325,396.96 to the Taraba State Government and to approve the sum of N22,254,062,330.08.

The resolution was unanimously adopted. No lawmaker contributed to the motion neither did anyone make reference to the president’s letter.

That is 12 BILLION Naira saved by Baba under 2 hours!!
12 BILLION Naira, they have already planned out how to share among themselves just for Xmas celebrations alone with their girlfriends and concubine!

This was one of the main reasons they were crying and wailing yesterday, they are all coming to terms that Baba is blocking all avenues for them to continue stealing.
Why won't they be in pains?!
It shall never be well with all enemies of the country wherever they are.

For the people that have not made up their mind on who to vote for, we will only tell you to follow your mind and vote wisely for any candidate of your choice and for your unborn kids future.
We are not here to campaign.
Posterity will judge us all.
God bless Nigeria.

Modify:
Just coming in from former Minister of Finance:

Former finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has revealed the blackmail and arm twisting that characterised budget passing by the National Assembly during the Goodluck Jonathan Administration.

She cited an instance in 2015 when the National Assembly leadership forced the executive arm to part with N17 billion for the federal lawmakers to pass that year’s budget
.
Our senators collected bribe from the Presidency to pass a budget that will benefit the citizens!??
There was a country!!

chocolatelady:
My dear, this was the reason why they booed him yesterday. PMB has refused to give them a penny to pass budget after 3yrs in office. He totally blocked all avenues for looting. The lawmakers are wallowing in pains so they decided to jerk the debts thinking that PMB will not see it. But the man was too smart and noticed it and draw their attention to it to the hearing of all Nigerians. They were very sad and in pains that they cannot get anything free from PMB and this made them so upset that they descended too low to boo him during budget presentation. When people are complaining bitterly about something, it means that the person is doing something good. No more free money to be shared by lawmakers. Thats why things are hard now becos most people have been depending on free money to survive. So with the closure of all avenues to loot, they are now wailing. They will wail till eternity. God bless PMB!
God bless you so much for your insightfulness sis.
You've said it all, just the way it is.
It is good to still see some people that understand the truth in all what is going on.
It is so refreshing to see we still have people like you and other people on this forum.
There is hope for the nation.
God bless you.
God bless Nigeria.

No president has strengthened the process of bill making in Nigeria more than President Buhari.

The number of bills he has returned to parliament with backup technical and legal reasons is a clear attestation to this.

Only God knows how many bills signed into law in the last 16 years contain unforgivable errors.

Had it been that the infamous "budget padders" of 2016 were thoroughly punished as expected the trend would have been curtailed or reduced.

However, Buhari government does not have the moral standing to do that because as the legislators are stealing, sleazy executive corruption is also going on unabated.Criminals @ all strata of government.

It's the reason we support PMB. We know he is not the Messiah but he will pave the way for a new Nigeria of our dream where leaders we we desire will have the opportunity to be elected into office without fear if religion or tribe and Nigeria will claim it's pride of place among nations. Then people like Moghalu, Owosere, Olawepo can stand and talk.

People who make nonsensical posts like this do because they must give an opinion by fire by force... sit down & read back , then ask yourself What will become of your state of mind when Buhari begins his second term in 2019?

Though I am a PDP supporter. But I like buhari for dealing with those thieves we called legislatures and blocking all their avenue to steal and loot the public funds at the detriment of the poor masses. Those legislooters only care about their pocket.

If only Jonathan had the guts to deal with those looters parading themselves as lawmakers but he was very weak undecided

Hope you saw on the other thread where Okonjo-Iweala said they bribed the Senate 17billion Naira just to accept the budget during Jonathan's regime?
