JUST IN: 91 million Nigerians now living in extreme poverty

Mayowa Tijani in On the GoTop Stories

Over 91 million Nigerians are now living in extreme poverty, TheCable can report.

TheCable understands that at least three million Nigerians have slipped into extreme poverty between November 2018 and February 2019.

According to the World Poverty Clock, created by Vienna-based World Data Lab, 91.16 million Nigerians were living below a dollar a day as of February 13, 2019.

In June 2018, the Brookings Institution projected that Nigeria had overtaken India, as the poverty capital of the world, with 86.9 million extremely poor people.

This was further confirmed by the British Prime Minister Theresa May, who said Nigeria had become home to the largest number of very poor people in the world, putting the figures at 87 million.

“Much of Nigeria is thriving, with many individuals enjoying the fruits of a resurgent economy, yet 87 million Nigerians live below $1 and 90 cents a day, making it home to more very poor people than any other nation in the world,” the UK prime minister had said.

Since May made this observation in South Africa in August, the number of Nigerians living in extreme poverty has grown to 91.16 million, with six people falling into poverty every minute, according to Brookings Institution.

Today, India has 48.7 million people living in poverty, from 73 million in June 2018. By implication, India has pulled out a minimum of 24 million people from poverty in less than eight months.

ARE YOU LIVING IN EXTREME POVERTY?

According to the World Bank, a person can be said to be living in extreme poverty, if they live below the poverty line of $1.90 or N693.5 per day.

The bank in its explanation of poverty levels said “when estimating poverty using monetary measures, one may have a choice between using income or consumption as the indicator of well-being”.

“Most analysts argue that, provided the information on consumption obtained from a household survey is detailed enough, consumption will be a better indicator of poverty measurement than income”.

However, using the World Bank’s poverty line, if you live below $1.90 a day, you will be classified as living in extreme poverty.

NBS says Nigeria GDP is looking good despite the global crude oil price recess which is making Buhari earn 60% less revenue than Jonathan administration. That's all that matters and not some ragtag journalist.

Despite Buhari administration earning 60% less yet he's come up with plenty projects such as

Our railways at itakpewarri, Lagos-ibadan, kaduna-abuja etc,

The production of low cost fertilizers,

Zik maoseleum

Baro inland port,

Rice mills,

Foreign reserve increase from #26b to #43b,

Construction of our express highways such as enuguonitsha, Lagos-ibadan etc.

Social policy schemes such as tradermoni, npower etc

And most especially, stabilizing us through this recession which happened because jonathan failed to save despite earning 60% more than Buhari coupled with the fall in the price of crude oil from #110 per barrel in 5 years under Jonathan to a paltry #50 per barrel under Buhari administration yet Buhari was able to keep us afloat while having many projects to his name thereby surprising Ngozi Iweala and Charles Soludo who predicted recession because jonathan failed to save during the time of plentiful.

Sai Baba. PDP, Neva again

my point is... the metric for measuring poverty rate is very wrong. Different countries have different cost of living and different purchasing power parity (ppp).

So, as an example... if a nigerian can buy 2 beers everyday at 250naira each (500naira or $1.3) and a ghanaian can buy the same at 8cedis each (16cedis or $3.2), the nigerian is automatically living below extreme poverty while the ghanaian is living above poverty.

Now, which sense can u find there?

Abi o. If they know what oil countries such as Angolans and Venezuela folks are passing through during this global crude oil price recess, they will thank God Buhari came in rather than Jonathan who looted us dry during oil boom when it was selling at $110 per barrel for five years unlike the paltry $50 it has been selling under APC. If Jonathan couldn't save during the time of plenty and was already borrowing, how woukd he have carried on during this crude oil price recess?

True, but the world is measuring everyone on same criteria.. it goes to show the very low standard of living we suffer.

If you had it better, you won't have migrants.

I think it's both...

Cost of living: because we don't Manufacture items of use, we pay double the price for transportation and duties..

Standard of living : majority cant afford premium items sourced internationally but rather opt for "No name brands" mostly locally produced. Eg 10 bottles of baby oku over a bottle of Heineken.

Nobody can tell US Atiku/Obi ticket is not the best among the contenders in this saturday elections
The economic team is brillant and Top notch, You cant just not admit these guys knows what they have come to do
Infact We will do our children the greatest disservice if we dont elect these team this Saturday
I will give you some examples:
The Team have already prepared a budget even without been in govt yet
Their plan is to grow this economy at double digit GDP which have never been done and there are laid out step by step plans to achieve this
How to effectively fight corruption without depending on body language

the longest fuel queue ever experienced in Nigeria was in buhari's regime in December 2017 to January 2018 where fuel was sold at all time highest cost of 500 Naira per litre.
https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/253319-two-days-christmas-fuel-scarcity-worsens-across-nigeria.htmlLike our elders use to say that Unless and Until
an Aching Tooth is Clinically and Completely
Pluck out of the mouth, The mouth must eternally chew with bitterness . This itchy fingered party called APC must be pluck out of our PRETTY BODY) come this weekend.

Is not all about buhari and his goans telling you how the other person is corrupt.
Nigerians use your head.
Check the people telling you others are corrupt and make decision yourself, don't let people decide what's glaring to you...
In everything to me Buhari as failed, from ministerial appointment and the rest. The APC see lagosians as maga who must pay they , with enourmorse resources they deliver mediocre projects and overhype it,then rig election, buy over opposition like pdp which refuse to hold them to account and put them on their toes, the resources available to them is too huge not to have turned lagos to mini duba, monthly allocation from FG, internaly generated revenue, borrowings, special allocation from vat proceed, money from development partners,Atiku has also portrayed himself as the one who can get Nigeria working by reenergizing the economy and providing jobs.
He is also a capitalist; an advocate of free trade,Remember the choice we make on February 16, will shapen alot about the Nigerian society for another Four years.
As we go to the polls, I admonish us to remember that the future of our Children and what history will say about the country depends on the decisions we make, our actions and inactions before, during and after the elections.
God bless Nigeria.
