Thugs beat up Gen Aziza ••• Disrupt political meeting in Delta From: EMMANUEL OGOIGBE Warri Friday, September 17, 2010 • Photo: Sun News Online More Stories on This Section Ahead of the 2011 general elections, a prominent Urhobo leader and Deputy President-General of the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU), Brigadier-General Patrick Aziza (rtd), was yesterday attacked by thugs suspected to be loyalists of a political chieftain from Delta Central. Daily Sun gathered that the thugs, who came in their large numbers arrived in two buses, laden with arms, to the PDP secretariat in Ughelli, headquarters of Ughelli Local Government Area, to disrupt political proceedings as a frontline politician in the state and PDP senatorial aspirant was midway into his message to the gathering of people. Investigation also revealed that canopies and chairs were freely used and destroyed by the armed thugs who defiled decency and morality, publicly defecating inside polythene bags and then spilled the contents over innocent members of the gathering. This brought the ceremony to an abrupt end as invitees and aspirants scampered for safety. It was also learnt that the thugs made their way to the private home of the President-General of the Urhobo Progressive Union and former governor of the state where Brig. Gen. Patrick Aziza (rtd) was molested, beaten and seriously injured. The prominent Urhobo leader and former Minister of Communication was later rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he is presently receiving treatment. Reacting, to the incident, State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, condemned the act, describing it as unfortunate and barbaric. He promised that the culprits would be brought to book. Also, the governor totally condemned disruption of the political meetings as well as attack on the Urhobo leader. He vowed that, no matter who was involved, the perpetrators of the act and their sponsors would be brought to justice. |
