Jarus:

I'm an Accountant in an Oil and Gas coy. What do you mean by critical ability?

All you need to know is basic knowledge of the industry and industry-specific accounting peculiarities.

Major areas of peculiarities are
1, Petroleum Profit Tax is what is applicable to upstream and CIT applicable to downstream
2, Oil companies are collecting agents for VAT. So when a vendor/supplier charges you VAT, you will not pay them, you are required by VAT guidelines to withhold teh amount and remit on their behalf. This is not the case with non-oil coys.
3,The materiality threshold in Oil and Gas accounting is usually higher; this will affect what you will classify as Capex and Opex

If you have general knowledge of accounting, you can always get to know all these things on teh job.

With the current global reliance on ERPs and CRM solutions, you're better of specialising in info. systems audit and probably taxation. . . look into CISA.

I just graduated from the University where I studied Economics and just wrote my ATS3 papers. I read the ICAN PROFESSIONAL syllabus cos I want to register for it but am not cleared in the following areas.

1. ICAN attaches great importance on practical training of her students, is ICAN responsible for fixing her students up in the places they will aquire the practical experience?

2. Since all students pass thesame ICAN exams, what do they mean by ICAN faculties?

I wll be glade to these positive answers to these problems.

Hello fellow FCA (as in Fellow chartered accountant, Associate chartered accountant or Future chartered accountant) I welcome everyone of us to this forum.

I am chartered accountant, , read economics in university with second class upper, qualified in 2008, inducted and graduated in the same year. I started my accounting profession from the grass, as in from ATS1 . I have been working as an accountant since my induction, which my motto is integrity, honesty and hardworking

Fellow FCA, despite my qualification, experience and personal attribute am jobless since May 2011.

All this happen when a young fellow approach me sometime September last year (2010) to be his finance manager to his newly establish haulage and logistics company due to my experience in that field. I resign my from old job, after three month notice by January 2011. By end of May 2011, My new job decide to close down the company due to disagreement between the two partner.

Fellow FCA, since then, I have in unemployment vacuum, kindly bail me out !

Should an opportunity comes up:

Call or text Tope: 08020330350 or

mail fasilat2007@yahoo.com

GREAT FELLOW F C A

Larrybobo,
Much as your case sounds genuine, a few things here give it to doubt.
Your use of Fellow FCA here sounds amateurish. You use fellow for one who belongs to the same group with you, you definitely cant be an FCA because you qualified just 3 years ago.

Your email address is also suspect. Your email address, coined from a female name, fasilat, suggests you are a female, your NL ID indicates you are a male. That looks like a scam to me.

Now, assuming that your case is real, how on earth will one leave an established company, as Finance Mgr for that matter, for a new 2-man firm whose future you dont know? A very poor dcision, if you ask me.

Big audit firms like PwC, KPMG will give you job irrespective of your course of study, provided you meet other requirements like age, 2-1 and of course you pass their tests and interviews.

some medium to small audit firms may restrict the course of study but in most cases their net also covers economics.

so with a degree in economics, you will almost always scale thru the course-of-study requirement of audit firms, and if you meet other requirements and do well in their selection process, you have the job.

audit firm is the best place to start for anybody that wishes to be a professional accountat. some even pay for your professional exams. you gain practiical accounting knowledge that will lay a good foundation for your career.

you can register for with your transcript

Are you a Chartered accountant? do you have prior experience in accounting? is it a big hospital or a small one? are their processes computerized or manual?

these info are necessary before one can attempt answering your question
Re: Accountants' Forum. by Dsubtle(m): 1:43pm On Sep 28, 2011
The Hospital is a small one and will use a manual method, they also have inventory(drugs & hosptal cards).

Hi D subtle,

Just wanted to know,  where you able to set up the accounting system? I know my reply may be quite late but let me know if you still need help; some pointers won't hurt.

Cheers

Thank for your response,
I have already done that,do not mind if you share setup procedure.
Re: Accountants' Forum. by mycvclinic: 8:22pm On Dec 28, 2011
Hi D subtle,

You post caught my eyes cos I'm currently setting up the accounting system for a filling station (earning while on holiday won't hurt smiley ). I started it today.

I have a question though - What do you mean by setup procedure (especially as you've already finished setting up the accounting system)?

I have a couple of issues I consider while preparing to setup an accounting system including;
- 1. The current system (eg, what records are currently kept + what records need to be kept - this influences choice of accounting procedures and ultimately the choice of software)
- 2. The core activities of the business (eg nature of transactions + are there several transactions - this will also influence accounting procedures and choice of accounting software) * this really should be the first point
- 3. Size of the business (What is its turnover/income etc will help determine what system of accounting is affordable and effective)
- 4. Knowledge of personnel that will update the system (I once worked on what was to be an accounting system for a Books/CD seller who wasn't interested in paying a store keeper with accounting knowledge. You can imagine how this will influence the components of the accounting system)

Not forgetting the core users of the financial information. Remember accounting isn't just about recording. The accounting system should manage information in a manner that will aid decision making and business analysis.

I don't view setting up an accounting system simply as 'purchase and install an accounting software'. Infact most of the accounting systems I've setup so far have been excel based mainly as a result of my findings using those 4 items (and more) I've listed above.

Please expatiate on what you mean by 'setup procedure' so I don't answer amiss.

(Pardon any grammatical error you may see in this reply, I'm trying to finish off a post on my CV thread)

Cheers
