That is inaccurate. Real power generation is FAR above that figure if you include back-up generation by industrial enterprises and private residences.

You think enough businesses survive on "back-up power generation" for a so-called "industrial revolution". Stop kidding yourself, pal.

Clearly, enough are 'surviving' well enough for us to see a continuous uptick in manufacturing over the last two years. Unless you are actually disputing the figures and statistics quoted. If so, let us know.

Truth is, these figures are correct, and what they show is that even though firms are factoring in private power generation into their operating costs, they are still making a healthy profit.

The industrial sector is still viable and profitable even with the power deficit.

The manufacturing sector was dealt probably the biggest blow during Nigeria's recession due to the exchange rate volatility at the time and general inflation in the economy. I know the massive blow my own company took and the struggle to stay afloat as companies around us shut down production. At best, we're seeing a recovery of the factories shut and millions of jobs bled. To state that there is an "industrial revolution" is a groundless claim. There is no "revolution" in any sector of Nigeria's economy. It's a crawling economy that can barely sustain the growth rate of advanced Western economies and far behind most of our African neighbors and other developing countries. Please, stop all these silly optimistic bullshiiit. Many of us actually live here in this shiiithole and we actually know what reality is. You're not selling propaganda to non-Nigerians.

Not really. The manufacturing growth is not just about recovering companies. Where is your evidence to back that claim? Are you saying there no new entrants to the sector, or that those firms which did not shut down are not witnessing growth and profits? You cannot assess an economy from a single negative facet.

There is no "revolution" in any sector of Nigeria's economy.

Strictly your opinion. The agricultural sector is witnessing a massive revolution as we speak. Anything that stopped us from being the world's largest importer of rice, HAS to be a revolution.

You stop the bullshit. This thread is about MANUFACTURING, not ''the economy''. In any case, ''the economy'' is witnessing a steady recovery following the oil-price crash fuelled recession. It is not going to jump from 1.7% growth to 9% in a year or two. So be patient, or leave for 'greener pastures'.

I must confess I am impressed by Buhari's performance.

The clear reduction in corruption has made funds available to implement various projects and social programmes, from the airports, to 2nd Niger Bridge, to rail projects, to the various poverty alleviation programmes like school feeding of kids, micro credit schemes for small businesses, N Power etc etc.

Where is my evidence? grin Where in your article is the evidence for Nigeria's "industrial revolution"? The data shows me nothing. The 57 points or whatever being floated is not a percentage, but points on an index whose base I have no idea what it is. Could be 57 points on a 10,000 points base. It even indicates that 3 sectors declined, including a key sector like primary metal. What kind of "industrial revolution" sees a decline in metal production and purchase: a foundational industry on which many other industries depend?

No, the economy is not witnessing a "steady recovery". If anything, strong economies often witness string rebounds immediately after recessions, but we've spent 4 good years of Buhari's administration trying to drag ourselves out of a recession at glacial pace. There is nothing steady about that. Any developing economy not in the high single-digits or double digits in economic growth is an economy in the pit.

It even indicates that 3 sectors declined, including a key sector like primary metal. What kind of "industrial revolution" sees a decline in metal production and purchase: a foundational industry on which many other industries depend?

Here is the basis for the information I presented:

Introduction

The April 2019 PMI survey was conducted by the Statistics Department of the Central Bank of Nigeria during the period April 9-13, 2019. The respondents were purchasing and supply executives of manufacturing and non-manufacturing organizations in all 36 states in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Bank makes no representation regarding the individual companies, other than the information they have provided. The data contained herein further provides input for policy decisions.

Data and Method of Presentation

The Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing PMI Report on businesses is based on survey responses, indicating the changes in the level of business activities in the current month compared with the preceding month. For each of the indicators measured, this report shows the diffusion index of the responses. The diffusion index is computed as the percentage of responses with positive change plus half of the percentage of those reporting no change, except for supplier delivery time, which is computed as the percentage of responses with negative change plus half of the percentage of those reporting no change. The composite PMI for the manufacturing sector is computed as the weighted average of five diffusion indices, namely: production level, level of new orders, suppliers’ delivery time, employment level and raw materials inventory/work in progress, with assigned weights of 25%, 30%, 15%, 10% and 20%, respectively. The composite PMI for the non-manufacturing sector is computed from four diffusion indices, namely: business activity, level of new orders, employment level and raw materials inventory, with equal weights of 25% each.

A composite PMI above 50 points indicates that the manufacturing/non-manufacturing economy is generally expanding, 50 points indicates no change and below 50 points indicates that it is generally contracting. The subsectors reporting growth are listed in the order of highest to lowest growth, while those reporting contraction are listed in the order of the highest to the lowest contraction.

Manufacturing PMI Report

The Manufacturing PMI in the month of April stood at 57.7 index points, indicating expansion in the manufacturing sector for the twenty-fifth consecutive month. The index grew at a faster rate when compared to the index in the previous month. Twelve of the 14 subsectors surveyed reported growth in the review month in the following order: electrical equipment; plastics & rubber products; cement; petroleum & coal products; transportation equipment; food, beverage & tobacco products; nonmetallic mineral products; chemical & pharmaceutical products; furniture & related products; textile, apparel, leather & footwear; printing & related support activities and fabricated metal products. The paper products and primary metal subsectors recorded decline in the review period.''

https://www.proshareng.com/news/CBN%20Circulars%20%20&%20Publications/Manufacturing-PMI-Stands-at-57.7Percent-in-April-2019-From-57.4Percent-in-March-2019/45089

Paper products and metal subsectors are virtually guaranteed to witness a turnaround going forward, as rising demand accompanies the growth in the other industrial sub-sectors.

Nigeria is still one of the world's largest importers of rice. The US busted the silly propaganda the APC government were shoveling to gullible citizens:
https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/11/nigeria-to-become-2nd-largest-rice-importer-in-2019-usda/

They've busted NOTHING. That was just a PROJECTION they made, based on God-knows-what. The same US projected Nigeria would disintegrate a few years back, so you really should take their 'projections' with a huge grain of salt.

Stop misrepresenting facts. Nigeria fell into recession in 2016 following the oil price crash of 2015. So Buhari has spent 2.5 years dragging us out of recession, NOT ''4 years''.

Secondly, the economy IS seeing steady recovery. Our GDP growth rate in 2017 was 0.8%. Today it stands at 2.1%. THAT IS STEADY RECOVERY.

Excerpts:

''The International Monetary Fund (IMF) last week acknowledged the fact that the Nigerian economy is on the path of recovery.
“Executive Directors welcomed Nigeria’s ongoing economic recovery, accompanied by reduced inflation and strengthened reserve buffers,” the IMF stated in its latest Executive Board’s 2019 Article IV Consultation with Nigeria.

It noted that real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the country increased by 1.9 per cent in 2018, up from 0.8 per cent in 2017, on the back of improvements in manufacturing and services, supported by spill-overs from higher oil prices, ongoing convergence in exchange rates and strides to improve the business environment. .....It is worthy to note that the improvement in manufacturing, services and agricultural activities that was pointed out by the fund has been the focus of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under Mr. Godwin Emefiele as it continues to carry out its developmental finance functions, focused on all the key sectors of the economy.''

Another massive petro chemical plant was commisioned recently in rivers, what about the electric meter and transformer factory in akwa ibom, fo you know of the orange juice concentrate plant in benue? The problem with people like you is that you are ignorant of the world we live in. Because of your colonial history, your focus when thinking of the outside world is the 20% that makes up the industrialised west. The other 80% of the world, which comprises the developing world, might as well not exist as far as your thought processes are concerned. So you have no clue how nations actually develop. Your only reference point is the developed nations. Which is why you think we need to have optimal power, like them, before we can pursue industrialisation. You are wrong.

The truth is that the majority of economies on earth are ''generator'' economies. Power shortages are the NORM across the world, not the exception. Nations DO grow economically, even with power deficits, and the economic growth is what spurs greater investments in the power sectors of nations. But you put the cart before the horse, by expecting optimum power supply BEFORE industrial growth can occur. But that is NOT how it works. Industrial and economic growth is FOLLOWED by incrementally greater power output, generated and distributed to meet the demand for power generated by the industrial growth.

Thanks for this great contribution. Personally I wish Buhari could be in power for the next 10 years. This country would be transformed by the time he's finished. I see a definite trajectory of development and industrialisation, fuelled by vision, and a near dramatic drop in corruption. A prophet is not accepted in his own country as the saying goes. But outside Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari commands deep respect among African and world leaders for his general integrity.

I laugh that you actually call me ignorant, and then go to expose your own level of ignorance.

First of all, if you know the meaning of industrial revolution, you wouldn't have made the really really ignorant and grievous error using Nigeria and industrial revolution in one sentence or statement.
As a university course, I studied in great detail the industrial revolutions of Britian, The United States , Japan, South Korea . This was long before the emergence of Taiwan, Malaysia, India and China as new industrial powers.

Therefore, anyone who thinks or deludes themselves that you can grow and nurture a failed and dilapidated wasteland like Nigeria into an industrial power with genetators is an ignorant pathetic mo.ron, for want of gentler words .And I'm sorry if that offends you.
Nigeria possesses no single factor, ingredient, strength or trait that are vital for economic progress , talkless of an industrial revolution . Not a single one.

No homogeneous culture.
No history of unity.

No political stability.
No stable administrative institutions.
We don't have any quality education at any level.
Very poor science and math skills.
We don't have a long term development plans.
We have no robust transportation sector to seamlessly move goods and people .
No stable power supply.
Corruption at every level of governance and administration.

The very fact that more than half the States of the federation cannot pay workers salaries from month to month, upwards up to 28 months is alone indicative that Nigeria does not even have a workable system of governance.

And should I give an example of Ajaokuta Steel, the biggest white elephant in the history of the world ? 40yrs, $20b or more, and Not even one single steel rod.
And you're talking about an industrial revolution ?

Its the concept that matters.

Have fun with the concept, make it ours.

Make it a reality.

We are at about the same stage of development we was before the distruption that was colonisation.

Nation Building!

We have to continue stubbornly on the cause to find our true Identity.

The African Identity.

Western Civilisation is not our cup of tea. We gave the world civilisation.

Africa is our cup of tea.

Arabs and Europeans missed 50% of world history, yet they claim to be the authority of this, that and the other.

50% of world history (from point zero to 50%) occurs exclusively inside the African continent.

Now that is our cup of tea.
