Nigerian military rescues 19 oil delta hostages

Robert Croke, the Newfoundland man who was kidnapped by Nigerian militants off an oil rig 10 days ago, was freed Wednesday along with 18 other hostages in a military assault.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon confirmed that Croke was freed, saying: “I am greatly relieved to confirm that Mr. Croke has been released and is now safe. I have ensured through our officials he receives consular assistance and is able to be reunited with his family as soon as possible.”

Croke and six co-workers from the United States, France and Indonesia were kidnapped in a high-speed boat attack on Nov. 7 by the Nigerian militant group MEND. On Wednesday, Reuters news agency reported from Lagos that all seven of the men and 12 others from separate militant kidnappings had been freed after “a land, air and marine assault” by the Nigerian military.

The freed hostages also included eight Nigerian staff abducted from an Exxon Mobil platform on Sunday and four others, said two security sources involved in the operation.

“It was a land, air and marine assault. They have all been freed, all 19 of them,” a source told Reuters, asking not to be named due to the sensitive nature of the operation.

A second security source involved in planning the operation said former militant leaders who accepted an amnesty brokered last year by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan had been instrumental in securing the safe release of the kidnapped oil workers.

“There was a strong element of cooperation between the former militant leadership and the security forces in the release of the 19 hostages,” the security source said.

“What happened today in Nigeria has never happened before. It shows the strength not only of the security forces but of the former militant leadership and the amnesty program,” the source said, also asking not to be named.

The brand new fake MEND will be getting the shock of the sorry lives! The real ND fighters turned in the fools, they'll soon be spilling their secrets and we will know their sponsors and why they operate as far out as Zamfara state. cool

I know there is oil off the coast of  akwa ibom, but not on land. But the newspapers have been running propaganda of oil well on land. And some of the state have been collecting revenue for oil well that do not exist.

Even Abia state governor claim he had 100 oil well. Cross river state government claim they have 75 oil well. There is no 75 oil well in cross river state. There is no 100 oil in abia state.

So the progangada they kidnap american in abia state and all that was nonsense to get money from the government. Which is very on fair to other state.

BEAF TRY TO REASON WITHOUT SENTIMENTS AND UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS MEANS.

Government is working with their faction to fight other factions.Do you understand what that means? It means civil war has started.

God help Naija.

this beaf guy seem to be so much abreast of the situation. For me this is good. And if a coalition of jtf and the ex-mend is the way to end the militancy in the naija delta, then, Its an ok function. But hope this ex mend guys won't become a problem 2morro. (when d pharaoh who do not knw joseph would be on the throne)

I don't see anything like cheap propaganda in what was reported, the reporter had various sources, and if these sources emphasized that the rescue was made possible with the help of reformed militants, i don't see anything bad in it.

For once can we applaud this government! Can we? Must we always wish this country bad and allow a few miscreants to create instability! Jonathan has taken the war to the creeks where he came from to sweep off all manner of criminality there.

Militancy is over anything after amnesty is criminality. The Nigeria Army promised to engage these criminals and in less than one week, they are yielding results.

Guess Henry OKAH would have to face reality that this is over.

The fear of JTF is the beginning of wisdom.
I hope money did not change hands to ensure the release of the hostages?
Time to teach this MEND or MENDERS a grave lesson once and for all.
Starting with all those useless South-South governors who sponsor them.

One important thing common folks must bear in mind is that you can't accept everything the press releases at face value, the big guns map out and execute their strategies with the view to enriching their coffers and donning their purple robes for seemingly our benefit but ultimately theirs. we can only hope we are elevated to those positions. Ex militants and Nigerian military  my big foot!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is quite unfortunate that they do all this at the expense of the people but utterly absurd and insulting to shove hogwash down our throats in the form of falsified and embellished stories. Who else will be wealthy enough to sponsor such militant operations but the govt. officials themselves. Nawa OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH for Naija.

An adage say when a fly has no adiser it goes to the grave with the dead body that is how I will describe these criminals under the disguise of millitancy. Anything after amnesty is a criminal, enough is enough let the government do anything possible to wipe them out either oalive or dead because this is no longer what Saro Wiwa died for, this is no longer fighting for people's right, it is now business, money making, mafiarist jingolo Ltd

Now the name we hear on news is John Togo who is leading them. pls poster is this a name? We have heard okah, jomo gbomo etc such alien sound names which no one could say where are they from must be clean up. I think when a boy ask his father what have you begotten then the end is near these bastards descendant of no root-generation must be shown a way out of this country to let Nigeria and Niger Delta people have peace.

I have long been waiting for this day to come. I want to see the video of the invasion carried out by the Nigerian military on the creeks. Lets see how these criminals are eradicated. Anyone with the video pls post it. Soon, militancy in the Niger Delta will be a thing of the past.

John Togo is a notorious armed robber in Warri who will soon be a dead armed robber. It is politicians that have paid fools like him to create instability in the country. But unlike the period of MEND when the whole Niger Delta was in active support, this time around these bastar'ds will be handed over to the authorities, because they are not fighting for anybody. There is no genuine ND person fighting in the creeeks after amnesty, those making claims now are paid up criminals.
