EKO ATLANTIC, LAGOS - NIGERIA'S ANSWER TO NEW YORK IN PICS

CONSTRUCTION STATUS: ONGOING

Located along the Atlantic coast of Lagos, Nigeria is a dynamic new city currently under construction. Adjacent to Victoria Island in West Africa's fastest growing region is Eko Atlantic. This project will transform 9 square kilometers of eroding coastal land into a thriving twenty-first century city.

Eko Atlantic combines an impressive blend of aesthetic beauty and seamless practicality. The city will be spread across seven districts, combining residential, commercial, financial and tourist development. They will all share the same high standards of urban planning, infrastructure and architectural excellence. The new city will feature tree-lined boulevards, waterways, manicured gardens, elegant plazas, three marinas and a stunning ocean front promenade. Eko Atlantic will be a city in which to live, work and play.

The Financial District, with towering skyscrapers, will attract multinational companies, especially in the oil and gas industries. It will become home to many of Africa’s top banks, financial institutions, and business leaders, and will help to establish Lagos as the financial capital of Africa.

Eko Atlantic will raise the standards of infrastructure in Lagos to sophisticated levels through a finely-structured urban plan that creates a balanced, environmentally friendly and efficient blueprint for a comfortable, healthy, safe and efficient style of life. Each of the seven districts of Eko Atlantic will display their own unique characteristics, but the infrastructural design will be standard throughout the city.

Bobs, your mates are busy getting a piece of the Eko Atlantic pie, in areas ranging from construction to finance and insurance, while you sit in your garbage heap, bitter and unconcerned. Abi u no go school? Tomorrow when you see your mates living in mansions and pulling Rolls Royce and Bugatti through their hardwork, you'll be accusing them of stealing money. Mugu. cool

I wondered about the impact of this project on the shoreline. Looks like it will actually help protect Victoria Island from climate change; they are building a seawall and have used computer simulations to estimate its effectiveness. Following video is pretty long (6 min), but pretty good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E906CPuq5Ac

Fashola received an award from the Clinton Global Initiative for this, as well: http://allafrica.com/stories/200909290203.html

I'm really impressed overall. This is a wonderful project that will attract billions of dollars, possibly 100s of billions in business to Lagos.

Still not clear to me what the ETA is for this project.

EDIT: minor typos

That would be really difficult to state. It's a bit like declaring a completion date for Abuja. It's hard to say when the building of a city can actually be declared ''completed'', though there are indications that Eko Atlantic would be pretty built up within the next 6 to 10 years. It's all private sector driven, so emphasis by firms would be on speedy execution of projects to avoid the various costs incurred by delayed completion.

Fair enough. I guess my question is more, when will I be able to buy a plot of land (or plots) and build housing there? When will the roads be completed? Things like that.

Dapo, I honestly believe within the next year, basic  infrastructural development will commence. I know that certain firms are already offering plots for sale on reclaimed land. Try the company, South Energyx.

Since independence in 1960, there's been no part of Nigeria, affluent or otherwise, that's been dominated by foreigners.

That's not about to change with Eko Atlantic.

Nigeria is for Nigerians.

I believe in trickle down economics, to some extent (not to the extreme that the Republicans do, though.)

Wealthy people who live in Eko Atlantic will still eat beef, chicken, buy fuel,  buy clothes, cars, etc. So of the large amounts of money they earn, a big fraction of it will be spent and circulated in the local economy.

Basically, attracting rich people to come and live on your land and spend money is always a great idea. Whether it ends up being inhabited by rich Nigerians, whites, Chinese, Indians, or aliens from out of space, so long as they bring money and SPEND it, it benefits the people of Lagos.

This is the way I think about things, at least. I'm more interested in this sort of economic development than socialistic things where the gov't directly spends money on the people in lame projects that aren't really economically productive.

Well, this is where education comes in. This is why some of you guys that have given up on education need to get back in the classroom and update your skills.  wink All those buildings you see in the pics, it is not big men and politicians like Atiku and IBB that will be working in them, but qualified, educated Nigerians drawn from across various fields spanning law, IT, banking, engineering, hospitality management, financial services, insurance, communications, entertainment, manufacturing, architecture, management, administration, etc etc. So the ball is really in your court.

Absolutely.

Can you imagine the amount of work for taxi drivers?

Bus drivers?

Chauffeurs?

Labourers and construction workers?

Lift engineers?

Facilities management staff?

Cleaners?

Security personnel?

Retail staff?

Customer services staff?

Restaurant and fast food staff?

These roles will be in high demand to service the new metropolis.

The opportunities are endless and this project is a blessing to ALL Nigerians. Mind you, similar projects are underway in other cities such as Port Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna, etc.

A town you will probably won't be able to afford on even 10 year's salary? ROFLMAO!!!

just joking ooo . . . But Fashola does not own or run Eko Atlantic. It is a wholly private project that has nothing to do with the state except that it is located in Lagos, according to the developers. Even the running of the ESTATE(since it is wholly run by the developers and not the state) will be handled by the developers/owners.

On a serious note, why in the world does Lagos need to give an Answer to Newyork? Is this not the same LOW SELF ESTEEM these same accuse others of having? ROFLMAO!!

Haba, don't be silly. I even read a British website the other day talking about Canary Wharf in London giving New York a run for its money. Kini big deal? Sometimes you people take this self esteem business to a ridiculous extent, to the point someone can hardly talk again. Chillax biko.  smiley

Kobojunkie, the point I'm making is that it's no big deal to say you're looking to ''create a New York'' in your backyard. Unless you're suggesting the Brits suffer low self esteem by their reference to Canary Wharf giving New York a run for its money etc etc.  undecided

Dude get real. You actually think they'd spend billions of dollars reclaiming acres of land from the ocean off Victoria Island and NOT use it for the purpose intended, and instead build shacks, ashi joints, and akara stalls on it?

Some people sef.

See, there is a problem with you playing the above card at this time. You have made yourself seem above this which you term “kolomentality” on this channel. You take every opportunity you can to put others down for even attempting to compare anything Nigeria/Africa in similar way as you have done here on this thread, yet here you are today making excuses for your engaging in the same “KOLOMENTALITY”. Why not accept that you are guilty?

The British have never really had a problem comparing themselves with the Americans. Matter of fact, they do not SHARE your KOLO mentality. To them Americans are Americans, but to you, they are more than just Americans /British or people with a different skin color/tone. They are colonial masters to you and every chance you get, you try all you can to blow smoke up our arses about how you are somehow BETTER THAN they are and what not (reminds me a lot of  high school).

So Sorry, you are not making any point here but simply trying to weasel your way out of being tagged for doing exactly that which you insult others for doing.

Such hot air bereft of sense.

OF COURSE Africa needs to develop and prosper.

OF COURSE we desire the type of prosperity and economic development at home that many have fled our country to enjoy overseas.

Nothing I've ever posted here suggested otherwise.

Everything I post is geared towards developing a can do mentality among our people, and curbing despondency.

Aspiring to 'create a New York' by way of speaking ought not to imply a feeling of ''low self esteem'' at all.

Especially if you know your history as an African (a history which includes incidentally, a list of accomplishments including the invention of writing, architecture, medicine, and the sciences).

But human development is a cyclical thing. Every race gets their own time at the helm of global affairs. Like the whites and Asians aspired to the development pioneered by the blacks in antiquity, so are the blacks and Asians of today aspiring to the development accomplished in western nations. It doesn't imply any one race is ''inferior'' to the other. It's just the way the clock ticks.

There's no hiding the fact that as of today, the USA is a developed country, and Nigeria a developing one.

So YES, we want to create a New York in Lagos. Absolutely!!

What does demonstrate low self esteem in my view is the unfounded idea that we cannot do it, or that we somehow don't deserve such facilities.

This seems to be YOUR unspoken position, suggesting that YOU may be the one burdened by such feelings.
