What a moronic statement turning corruption into a genetic trait transferred form parents to offspring thereby being unable to get rid off, even if it's a genetic trait we can mutate,we can cut out the genes responsible for our corrupt nature. Regardless it's an habit that has been learned and can definitely be unlearned but we didn't learn it within a span of 59 years and we definitely can't get rid of it within 8 years. Successive seat holders need to see it as a disease responsible for how shitty Nigeria is right now and treat it accordingly. All that matters is we keep trying

Death sentence has never stopped corruption anywhere in the world. Corruption and wickedness are natural to humans. When you create checks like capital punishment, the wicked and corrupt aren't incentivise to turn a new life instead they invariably seek loopholes or other ways to go around your checks with better caution. grin

... Because corruption may not be eradicated with death sentence, WE SHOULD NOW LEAVE IT TO BECOME OUR GOD??
What we mostly need in this part of the world is VALUE RE-ORIENTATION, Since it is in the blood, it's not something that should be left to the government alone. All hands must be on deck, from the government, to the religious leaders, schools, even families have a lot to do.

Whatt Is this one saying? We can stop corruption ourselves if we do the right thing.
The problem is just that our agencies in charge of fighting corruption are not independent and they don't make efforts to prevent looting rather they only try to recover and investigate after the deed is done and it is too late.
And when. We say corruption, we always think big money looters we don't consider the small bribery cases in our ministries. If we can deal with the small cases then people will have fear. There will be reduced sense of impunity.
Come to me I will give you the recipe to end corruption in Nigeria in one year.

The system made us this bad. meet Nigerians in saner climes and watch them succeed legally. The naija system is so messed up.everyone has learnt that no one is for anyone.. we learnt that there are few people you can turn to for help and opportunity, we become greedy when entrust with fortune for the fear of poverty.. the poor are trying to elevate themselves from it while the rich are dead scared of returning to it.

I don't agree wit u wen u say d system made us this bad. We are d system but i fully agree with you dat wen entrusted wit fortune, 'some' of us from d fear of poverty try to elevate ourselves from the purse of dat organisation... Poverty is real man

Robert Clarke, a senior advocate of Nigeria, says death sentence will not stop corruption because the act of stealing runs in the blood of Nigerians.

In an interview with the Punch, the lawyer said good governance remains the solution to curbing corruption and improve the economy.

He said corruption is strengthened by the perception of some Nigerians who view political positions as a “money-spinning venture”.

“Whether it is capital punishment or not, a crook would always be a crook. Most of these things are in the blood,” he said.

“Somebody who wants to steal has it in the blood and some Nigerians have imbibed the custom of believing that when they are working for government, they are there to steal. If you are made a commissioner tomorrow, all your relations are looking forward to getting contracts from you.

“So, we believe it’s a money-spinning venture. Sentencing people to death will not stop people from stealing. it’s in the blood of Nigerians to steal. Once there is good governance, the propensity to steal would reduce.”

Clarke called for the abolition of death sentence, saying most governors refuse to ensure its effectiveness as a result of their religious beliefs.

He recommended a minimum of 20 years imprisonment as an alternative to capital punishment.

“When a mechanic has power supply to work in his workshop and a tyre repairer has electricity to do his job, when will he have the time to dupe others? Nigeria is so great, with about 200 million people,” he said.

“Can you imagine if we have one singlet and briefs factory in Nigeria? Do you know the market it would have? We import everything. Whereas if most of our politicians who are stealing money can set up singlet and pants factories in every geo-political zone, the market is there, but we all just believe in stealing.

“We should abolish death sentence and make it a minimum of 20 years’ imprisonment. I believe somebody who killed at the age of 36 and is sentenced to 20 years and comes back at the age of 56 should have learnt a lesson, rather than keep them there.

“Some are afraid to sign a death warrant or they have religious phobia that you shouldn’t take life when you don’t make one. Then, let us agree to cancel death penalty in our books and make it 20 years’ imprisonment.”

No Law stops corruption, no law stops murder, no law stops rape, no law stops kidnapping, no law stops armed robbery. Nigerians should get it out of their heads that laws and enforcement of laws stops crimes.

His opening statements makes me remember that old f00ls were once young f00ls. Nigerian politicians are not as corrupt as the Russians,Chinese or even the Almighty American politicians but here someone who is supposedly educated is saying its in the blood of Nigerians. We like taking the wrong approach to everything. Why not focus on the tackling and eliminating causes rather than its effect Get to the root no matter how long it will take and be sure of progress instead of beating about the tree leaves decade after decades and achieving nothing.. Pls these old generations should die off so that we can begin to make real progress because they are a very large part of the problems of the nation today. Nonsense angry

If you successfully execute the current crop of political elites on live TV in front of a 50 million viewers audience one by one from those that seem untouchable and immune from all form of retribution to those that worked behind the scene trust me those images will flash right before the eyes of anyone who might have the inclinations of taking what is not theirs. Just imagine the likes of obasanjo, good luck, Atiku, yerima, bagudu, Allison etc public figures of international reputation getting hanged you will see people confessing to crimes they committed to avoid such a deal or better still swallowing sniper so that government won't hunt and hang them. Just do this for an 8 year period eliminate the current crop of elites and usher in new blood with history and social media to remind the corrupt of their eventual downfall.
