If u must lecture get a PhD...but the Doctors will want a different law, with time they will say a consultant should be a professor automatically because he has spent 6 extral years in residency

They are already advocating this already, I assure you. They took advantage of the illiteracy of Nigerians to get a lot of anomalies instituted for them.

I expected your reply to tow this line. Very unoriginal. Look, I will not be held responsible for your current mental state. If you have a PhD and still feel worthless enough to come here to tell doctors what they should or should not have to move up the professional cadre, that's all on you. I will repeat it again, just in case you are daft, one fellowship is equal to multiple PhDs.

Don't stop there, make 2 fellowships equal to 10 professorships. Ndi ara!

This is blackmail and Nigerians will no longer budge to it.

No PhD, then they should get out of the classrooms and stop armstwisting the FG to bend rules for them. In the UK, Canada, US, it is MD, PhD not fellowships, before you can teach medical students. The illegality must stop. The FG should sack them from the classroom, they are ones indoctrinating our young physicians in training that they can get anything from government as long as they threaten Nigerians with strikes. They are even claiming that their fellowships are bigger than PhDs, what a nonsense! In the Academia? Tufia!

NUC must not stand down on this.
JOHESUITE spotted . We all know that PhD is not necessary to teach medical students . Anyways ,Your NUC has accredited the national Post graduate medical college of Nigeria to Award MD which is a PhD equiavelent .

Stop lying to yourself, there is nowhere in the world that MD is equivalent to PhD. Physicians abroad go for PhDs even after their MDs if they must be in the academia or run both concurrently. That's why you'll see 'MD, PhD' after the names of authors and lecturers on medical text books. Your MD is a professional doctorate just like PharmD, DNP, OD and DCLS.

Stop lying to yourselves, Nigerians have woken up and are more exposed now.

Guy stop ranting

In America MD is equivalent to MBBS.
ELSEWHERE MD is a doctorate like DA, LLD, DsC or DBA

They still remain professional doctorate degrees not plausible for the academia, if you must earn your keep as a lecturer in the medical college, get your PhD. It is a universal law in every institution worth it's salt. You'll not be allowed to bend it.
NUC should stand it's ground.

,^Those people wanting to go on strike are NOT part of the Academia. They are not even staff of the university.

With regard to MD or LLD degrees they are university doctorates.

You say Phd is a universal law.

Where did Osinbajo get a Phd before he started lecturing at Unilag?
Stop kidding yourself not even in the UK or USA is there such a requirement.
Bottomline I'd the NUC will swallow its vomit in front of haters like you

I never knew physicians in Nigeria answer 'Professors' without earning PhDs. That's fraudulent in my view.

In other climes it is practically, all professors of medical courses earn PhDs not fellowships all medical books and articles I've seen are written by consultants with MD, PhD suffix after their names.

NUC must not shift ground, all the consultant earning fat pay as lecturers in our medical colleges must go back and earm their PhDs as obtainable in advanced countries.

NUC should not allow itself to be blackmailed, the FG should get ready to replace the so called consultants. There are many jobless or underpaid physicians, let them take over after FG sacks the overfed consultants who earn double allowance as clinicians and as lecturers (without PhD).

Nigerians stand behind NUC.

Seems u don't know wat ure talking about.

Please show me one Surgeon with PhD, or cardiologist, nephrologists and co with PhD..

the doctors with PhD are those who go for masters/PhD after Mbbs degree in anatomy nd co, and they end up as Anatomy_physiology, biochemistry Lecturer in Basic medical courses (yr 2-3), and they never bear the consultant title. Just Doctor.

As for those who are going for clinical Courses, no PhD course offers cardiology , neurosurgery, u av to go for residency and become a consultant. these are the ones that teach higher classes medic (yr4-6)..

the problem here is NUC have no idea of what they are talking about, PhD in where did u want them.
Consultants are like gods in there speciality, still wondering where PhD will enter to fit in..

You can actually start as a young assistant lecturer with even an M.Sc but ultimately you must get your PhD that is what NUC is saying and that is what is obtainable in other advanced climes where we all like to run.

MD, LL.D, PharmD, DMLS, O.D, DPT are all professional doctorates in their rights. They cannot suffix in any academic setting as replacement for PhD, it is an anomaly and you all know this.

Before now, you have over the years threatened Nigerians with strikes in order to armtwist them to get what you want, you now believe you can wake up one day and declare that M.B.B.S is greater than M.Sc and your fellowship certificates are greater than PhD, that's laughable and nonsensical.

I don't know of any professor or assistant professor of Medicine/Medical science without a PhD in the US. All their textbooks and publications are usually people with a PhD or a MD, PhD. We all know these things.

Even ASUU is not buying your crap. FG, ASUU and NUC should collaborate and sack the MDCAN members if they go on strike, they are even overfed. Declare their posts vacant and fill it with other physicians who are ready to work.

Gov. Fashola sacked them in 2012 in Lagos and put up an advert for vacancy, the next day Health service commision off Broad street was filled with unemployed and underemployed physicians ready to replace them, heavens didn't fall.

PhD is done in surgery, and if the lecturers in our medical schools are ready to do it, then they should give way for those with the qualifications. Fellowships and residencies are purely professional/vocational training, not withing the NUC's purview.

Most of those medical lecturers lack basic research skills and an open mind, that's why indoctrinate young physicians in training that they can get whatever they want with strikes and crude methodology and without going through normal procedural routes.

Get your PhD if you want to train students in our universities and get the entitlements accruable therein. That's what's obtainable in other climes. Ours won't be different.

I have an honest question? In Nigeria how many doctors sef remain? The few that remain are either trying to leave or a dulling themselves. The way doctors and nurses are like hot cake in America, why would any sane doctor worth his salt still be in Nigeria?

In all arguments ,be logical. Nigeria which has never been the pacesetter in any educational or scientific endeavour, now wants to be the ones to set standards for how medical university education should be world-wide? Even drifting fro UK, US and European standards?

Well ,from your posts you're likely a johesu apologist or an intense doctor hater. Enjoy your life.

Some policies are poorly thought out. Let the NUC find consultants with Phds to teach in all the Federal, State and Private Medical Institutions in Nigeria. They will be lucky if they can find up to 10 consultants with Phds in the whole of Nigeria.

If this policy is not overturned, I predict that no medical student will graduate in Nigeria in the next 10 years, and no current resident will become a consultant.

That anomalies impunity are allowed to go on forever as norms does not confer on it any form a form of legitimacy..

In the Academia all over the sane world, PhD is supreme and Nigeria cannot be different, if you are not interested in it, the retire to your private offices and consultation rooms and stop indoctrinating our students with the false belief that they can ride roughshod over any procedural system and get away with it. Stop saying what you don't know.

Medical doctors worldwide has never required PhD for teaching clinical medicine. Not even in in the US, UK or other climes.(except in in university in Uganda where they award PhD automatically when you complete your fellowship. The fellowship programme which spans 5 to 10yrs is the only requirement worldwide to become a professor in medicine

In those countries you mentioned, there is an emphasis on research with or without a PhD.

Nigerian consultants have never felt the need to research, they all feel work experience quantifies as research.

The NUC is trying to nip this thinking in the bud by insisting on research experience via the PhD route.
Only place the NUC goofed is insisting on using only the PhD, they could just insist on qualified teachers having specified number of top research publications before being qualified as teachers
