The senator representing Niger South, Bima Enagi, has introduced a bill that seeks to ban the importation of generators in Nigeria.

The bill, titled “a bill for an Act to prohibit/ban the importation of generating sets to curb the menace of environmental (air) pollution and to facilitate the development of the power sector,” was one of the six bills read for the first time on Wednesday.

The bill prescribes, at least, ten years imprisonment for any person who knowingly sells generator sets.

Other details of the bill obtained by PREMIUM TIMES shows that the ban shall not include generator sets used for essential services which include:

* Medical purposes (hospitals and nursing homes and healthcare facilities).

* Airports.

* Railway stations/services.

* Elevators (lifts).

* Escalators.

* Research Institutions, and

* Facilities that require 24 hours electric power supply.

“Approval for exclusion shall, however, be obtained from the Minister in charge of Power, who shall brief the Federal Executive Council quarterly on approvals granted.”

The bill further directs “all persons to stop the use of electricity generating sets which run on diesel/petroI/kerosene of all capacities with immediate effect, in the country.”

“This bill seeks to ban the importation and use of generating sets (generators) in the country and to curb the menace of environmental pollution which leads to potential health hazards it poses to the whole nation,” part of the document read.

The lawmakers are expected to debate the details of the bill on another legislative day.

The introduction of the bill comes four months after the Senate rejected a resolution to temporarily ban the importation of generators.

Foolish Bill's from the north. Is anybody still importing sagem, trium,alcatel phones in Nigeria? It's about demand and supply. If there is steady electricity, it will ban itself.

If not for Generator, I would have been a dead man this heat period.
Fix the power first, the importers will automatically stop importing generators cos of low patronage. Simple thing.

The IQ of the north is too low even for African standards.
A country whose economy is generator powered wants to ban generator.

These same northern senators are the clowns sponsoring ludicrous bills like social media bill, immunity for lawmakers bill and other nonsense bills.

Abeg,these people too dull. They cannot develop this country in a thousand years.

Such almajiri like thinking cannot work in this fast paced 21st century.

Generators is not the reason why you have poor power.

If you allow these Mad Men to ban generator, you have succeeded in not only decimating your economy, but have also reduce Your Own standard of living significantly.

And I can bet that you can't stop this same senator from using generator.

It just shows that some of these so called Senators are just in the Senate to waste the tax payers money.

You do not need any bill to ban importation of generators. All you need is steady provision of electricity 24 hours in 24 months and no body will waste his/her money to buy any generator. If there is no demand, there will be no supply. Simple.

To ban generators How can we ban generators when even our president depends on generators for regular power supply

If this bill can be passed into law it will be of great help to the power sector. But I am sure that even the president will oppose this bill.
