Nigeria roads does not have markings simply because the bills to get those paints for markings are meant for other things like fueling side chicks vehicles, holidays, Aso ebi for parties and the likes

Nigerians are not ready to pay the taxes needed to keep the lane markings well maintained.

The ones we pay are looted.. So why pay more?

1.Yes they get looted because Nigerians tend to think of democracy as freedom to vote...and freedom to focus on what Abuja is doing, not on what your state governor, or local government chairman is doing.

Democracy is ahrd work.

2.We don't pay enough taxes. Our tax per gdp is 5.7 % (2017). South Africa has much better roads and a tax per gdp of 28.7%. (and yes, they have the same issues with corruption and lootography).

3.As I have said upthread, Nigeria's economy is based on selling raw materials, and you don't need a good road network linking all the country to support your extractive industry. Just the roads leading from extraction site to port. South Africa has a large proportion of its economy dependent on industries (though they too are becoming more resource dependent)...so they have to have a good road network or nothing

4.And because we don't have a good economic basis...because of our resource dependency, we have a budget of $26billion. South Africa spent $93 billion in 2016 alone. If we want a good budget, we have to stop relying on oil, and start relying on manufacturing, and start paying the price to get a better society, instead of sitting down and waiting for manna from heaven in the mornings.

Keep quiet. If don't know what road markings are then keep shut. 99.999% of Nigerian roads have no markings and the .0001% that do have markings that are inadequate and hence do not make a difference.

That's a very strange comment....Nigerians do paint their houses.

Maybe in some slum areas, and probably in the rural areas (and even then, I have been to a village in the North where some houses were painted)...they don't paint.

The roads you see where built before 1960 and were maintained before 1960 There was a framework for the development of Nigeria pre-1960, then greedy Awolowo/Azikiwe/Balewa claimed Nigerians wanted independence. They sought for independence for their selfish agendas, to provide for themselves and their progenies.

To this day the current Political thieves are still miss-managing the roads built by the British.

I am not going to lie, if the British come back and want to take back control of thos country, I will support it because the clowns in power have dragged Nigeria into the medieval ages. Nigeria in 2020 is worse than Nigeria in 1960.
Never imagined there was someone who thought in the same line as I did. Those corrupt morafukas were just after their selfish interest. Yet they tout them as 'heroes past'. Heroes my ass. They couldn't wait to get their hands on the country's wealth so they to came up with a silly excuse of the country being ready for independence. Na tunda go faya ol of dem.

I concur that bad governance and incompetent leadership are definitely contributory here.
But with particular regard to the issue under discussion, corruption takes the cake.
I admit that we now have a shrinking revenue, hence the low budget for public utilities, but it has not always been like this.
Recall that in the 1960s and 70s,we raked in a lot of cash from the sale of petroleum, but could we boast of having word-class utilities even at the time?
One of the Heads of state in the afore-mentioned period was quoted as saying that Nigeria's problem was not dearth of money but what to spend the money on.
If we have always been broke as a nation, how do you explain the fact that we keep recovering millions of dollars stashed away in foreign banks by our leaders?
We did have the money at a time (unfortunately not anymore) to make Nigeria a cynosure, but the avarice and corruption of our leaders never allowed that dream to see the light of the day.
We had the golden chance, but sadly, we blew it!

Iquote author=kikero post=89578865]

Even without corruption, this year we have a budget of $26billion. That's not enough for guaranteeing good healthcare , talkless good roads and transportation.

Mind you I don't downplay corruption, but the explanation for why Nigeria does not work has less to do with corruption, and more to do with how we make the money, which is a function of bad leadership.[/quote]

Our roads per KM are some of the most expensive, incomplete, non standardized and poorly done

1.The oil boom era didn't start until 1973, when oil prices shot up thanks to OPEC increasing prices then. It lasted until 1982...before hand, we were reliant on selling agriucltural produce to the UK, along with some minerals. Those markets went from the late 1970's onward...but we used oil revenues to hide the cracks till the 1982 crash.

By the way, Gowon made that comment about having too much money to spend in 1974...when the income from oil was beginning to come in...a lot.

2.Actually between 1960-80 we did build a lot of infrastructure...roads and even railways (Nigeria railways built a railway line between Kano and Nguru in the NE between 1960-64....by themselves). Most of our power supply infrastructure , including generation went up in the 1960's and 70's (Kainji Dam was built between 1964-69, Shiroro Dam was even built between 1980-95 self!).

The problem was Nigeria was not ready to pay for the upkeep of these infrastructure. Take power. Power has always been heavily subsidized, and even then most people refuse to pay. With that problem, there won't be enough money to expand infrastructure, build new ones, keep old ones well maintained (By contrast, Obasanjo allowed GSM companies charge whatever they wanted which is why they have the cash to pay for expanding their infrastructure and building new ones...and why we have things like home internet for example).

3.Finally, our source of income as a nation is dependent on extracting raw materials, and selling them. You don't necessarily need a good road network and power supply, except to a few critical places for that. Whereas, in first world countries, their income is dependent on having things like power and transport working well all the time...which is why the roads in the UK work but those in Nigeria don't.

Some roads may have lanes when just constructed, but as soon as they start to fade away, that is the end of the lane marking on that road, almost never to be re-marked again.

Generation after generation of Nigerian drivers keep adapting to the lawlessness of driving on roads without lane markings, further worsening the already chaotic driving situation aided by low level enforcement of law and order by the police force.

I guess to some, we should rejoice at the fact that we even have roads in the first place. Unfortunately, these people are somewhat justified, in the sense that, the unsightly sight of bad roads pervades the entire country.

All in all, we need to promote order in our society and lane markings are a step towards order, at least in terms of road transportation.

You cannot aspire to become a developed country and ignore the details, because the details are far from trivial.

It is because all the people that are leaders in every department of the federation are not qualified to be there. They are blind people leading the well sighted people. Every time I see what you just mentioned, I feel bad and ask myself if whoever is minister of transportation has ever traveled out of the country, or the governors pass through the roads.
Lack of the road demarcation actual add to bad driving habits in the country.

Lack of sidewalks in our road infrastructure is the biggest problem not road markings. It is a shame that in this 21st century, we are building open gutters on both side of our roads and it doesn't even look repulsive to sane minds.

How often do you pass Kubwa Express road in Abuja?
The Outer Northern Expressway(ONEx) (AYA-Kubwa-Zuba), Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway connecting onto the ONEx and Umar Musa Yar'Adua Expressway (Giri-Airport Road-Stadium) and over the NAEx, and Zuba-Gwagwalada-Lokoja Expressway have markings in Abuja, but ONEx paintings are always renewed almost annually.

The paintings on Zuba-Lokoja well ends on the Abaji boundary of the FCT.

Let's just presume that road painting is seen as a waste over here.
