Time they say is very significant. The time you were born and the day you would go are very vital in the annals of history. why do we remember certain date as being significant to us?
The struggle of June 12 1993 is still fresh in our memories. how can we forget such an important date in a hurry. It was the day Nigerians went to the poll to elect their leader in person of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola as their president in what was a judged to be the most transparent, free and fair election ever conducted in the history of Nigeria.
Hope was dashed; MKO Abiola could not fulfill his dream of becoming the president as the election was annulled by the military administration of Ibrahim Babangida. Babangida cited issues of irregularities and violence as reasons for annulling the election. Spare me the luxury of telling you the disaster that followed and how the masses' president was never allowed to fulfill his dream.
Many Nigerians agitated that Chief MKO Abiola should be immortalized. Several government had come and gone and nothing meaningful was done. In 2018 Muhammadu Buhari, now a civilian president of Nigeria under its Fourth Republic , declared 12 June as the authentic Democracy Day instead of May 29th and this seemed to go down well with majority of Nigerians.
But for your information, do you know that a prominent northern leader was born today? Sir Ahmadu Bello (Sardauna of Sokoto) was born on June 12th 1910. How on earth would a president from the north easily accede to the wishes and demands of the southwesterners' demands on June 12?
In Nigeria , Armed Forces Day , also known as Remembrance Day , is celebrated on 15 January. It was
formerly celebrated on 11 November of every year to coincide with the Remembrance Day (Poppy Day )
for the World War II veterans in the British Commonwealth of Nations. Would you say the change in date was a mere coincidence? I guess you might be wrong. Sir Ahmadu Bello was assassinated on this day: January 15th 1966. Not only him, Sir Tarawa Balewa was also assassinated on this said date in Lagos.
I would like you to ask yourself why October 1st which coincide with our independence was changed to May 29th as the official date for handing over of government? If you are students of history, definitely you would know that it was on May 29th 1804 that the sokoto caliphate was established. Dig deep and understand why it was changed from October 1st to May 29th
Never underestimate the breed of political leaders we have in this country. They are very smart. they know how to pacify the masses.
