This thread is aimed at educating readers about who these candidates realy are and what they actually stand for. We'll try to stay with facts and put forward credible evidences and write ups to back our claims.
Kindly abstain from discussing the negatives of any of the candidates. Let's just discuss their past records and achievements and how they have touched the lives of the average Nigerian.

I'll set the ball rolling by posting an article about Buhari's PTF days.

Development: PTF - shining in the gloom

The Petroleum Trust Fund, headed by former President, Gen. Buhari, has confounded all its critics. As a development agency, it has succeeded spectacularly where all others failed. Pini Jason has the details.

The one silver lining to emerge from the current heavy economic cloud must be the performance of the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund (PTF). In October 1994, General Sani Abacha hiked the pump price of petrol from N3.25 to N11 per litre, promising, with Decree 25, to set up a Petroleum Trust Fund to distribute the gains from the increase on social and infrasturctural projects. The board of the fund, headed by former Head of State, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, was eventually inaugurated on March 21, 1995.

The Fund began with an initial capital of about N60bn in 1996. Its all encompassing mandate includes the rehabilitation of roads and waterways, educational and health institutions, providing textbooks and stationary, procuring essential drugs and vaccines, providing water supply systems, reviving crumbling agricultural sectors, connecting outlying areas to the national electricity grid, extending railways and telecommunications and ensuring consistent food supply.

The huge budget and all-embracing mandate earned PTF some criticisms. Some dubbed it "the alternative government," accusing it of duplicating the responsibilities of other existing government agencies. There was for instance an initial conflict about who should be tarring which road, between PTF and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.

Yet, for once, other Nigerians began to hope that here was an agency that took its work seriously. The question was: could it carry out its entire mandate, or even a part of it? Everyone waited to see what would happen.

Initially PTF awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 12,000km of federal highways (including drainages) nationwide, and between 25-100km of urban road in major cities such as Gusau, Benin, Funtua, Zaria, Enugu, Kaduna, Aba, Lagos, Lokoja, and Port Harcourt. A N27.3bn contract was awarded for road rehabilitation in the first quarter of 1996. The sum of N1.328bn was awarded to 53 pharmaceutical companies for the supply of drugs, while the importation of vaccines cost N229.9m. As at December 31, 1997, funds available to PTF stood at N115.1bn.

One thing even the most uncharitable critic of PTF will admit is that it has evolved a new way of doing things. This is true to its mission statement which is 'to establish and operate an open, modest and efficient organisation for the purpose of achieving the honest and timely execution of carefully designed socio-economic projects.'

Right from its inception, the Head of State directed the fund to operate a lean bureaucracy. It depends therefore largely on consultants supervised by Afri-Projects Consortium, the management consultant to PTF. This policy has created jobs and boosted the confidence of Nigerian professionals such as architects, engineers and quantity surveyors.

In many other ways, PTF has thrown a lifeline to dying sectors of the economy. Most of Nigeria's pharmaceutical companies were failing, and the foreign multinationals were divesting. But through its drugs procurement programme, PTF has turned the balance sheet of most of them into profit. Equipment and car leasing companies are also benefitting from the multiplier effects of PTF operations.

Banks and insurance companies have also benefited. Nigeria has a history of contractors collecting mobilisation (advance) fees and not carrying out the contract. But not with PTF. Every advance payment up to N10m must be guaranteed by a PTF-approved bank, while other advance payments are covered by performance bonds issued by similarly approved insurance companies. This method, apart from increasing solvency through cash deposits, has created business for banks and insurance companies.

One of the insurance companies that has benefited from PTF as a provider of performance bonds is The United Nigeria Insurance Company (UNIC), a composite insurance company which provides both life and non-life insurance. The total assets of UNIC stood at N979m while it grossed premium income of N916m and settled claims of N263m in 1996. With a staff of 552 spread all over its nationwide branch network, UNIC is today one of the leading insurance company in Nigeria.

Another company that has done good business with PTF is IPWA plc, formerly International Paints (West Africa) Ltd. IPWA is today one of the biggest and most diversified paint manufacturers in Nigeria. The company product range spans automotive paints, building paints, industrial coatings and marine coatings. Others are packaging coatings, protective coatings and wood finishes.

Most PTF contractors, specialist advisers and consultants lease and use computers, fax machines, printers and photocopiers. This has provided a new market for computer companies like Leading Edge Ltd., headed by Mr Tony Edoro, the managing director. Leading Edge is foremost in cloning computers with parts from diverse companies such as US Micro-Generation, IBM Direct, Merisel and Gateway. According to Mr Edoro, a widely experienced computer systems engineer, the advent of PTF has been good for Leading Edge. The company's turnover has grown from N50m in 1995 to well over N100m in 1997.

Apart from energising several sectors of the economy, PTF is also setting the pace in another direction. In the words of Mr Salihijo Ahmad, of Afri-Projects Consortium, the twin objectives of PTF are to "rehabilitate infrastructures and reorientate the people." This the fund does through its insistence on transparency even though some critics still accuse it of lopsidedness in project execution and selection of consultants and contractors.

In a country dogged by lack of transparency, PTF is the first, and perhaps the only public institution in Nigeria to publish its annual accounts. Last year, when he presented the annual report and accounts of 1996, Gen. Buhari promised to present the 1997 accounts before the end of the first quarter of 1998. He fulfilled that promise.

The 1997 account of PTF shows that it disbursed N24.3bn on roads, N21.2bn on security, N7.8bn on health, and N3bn on other projects. Other disbursements include N2.2bn on water supply, N936m on food supply and N476m on education. It realised a total of N1.049bn from various investment activities.

Reviewing the success story of PTF, Gen. Buhari said: "We have consolidated our execution of the take-off projects for the previous year and increased our intervention within the sectors. There is no doubt that the years ahead will witness even more intervention, as reports of some of the studies commissioned are received and project execution commenced."

The fund has embarked on community education to sensitise and enlighten communities of its activities. The idea is to bring recipients closer to the objectives of the fund, so that they can participate in project identification and selection as well as eventual PTF projects in their areas.

One aspect of the overall project that the public has raised an eyebrow over is the Armed Forces PTF. According to Gen. Buhari, PTF is under instruction to allocate 20% of its funds to the armed forces, and another 1% to the Federal Capital Territory. The allocation to the Armed Forces is probably a continuation of a practice that started during Gen. Babangida's time when he used to allocate excess revenue from the projected price of crude directly to the commanding officers. But what worries critics of PTF is that the military is not accountable to anyone regarding its utilisation of funds. Moreover, critics question the wisdom of allocating such a huge chunk to the military (who also usually takes the lion's share of the budget) over and above food supply, education and health. Apart from roads, the allocation to all other sectors does not add up to the Armed Forces PTF allocation.

Nobody knows how long PTF, a purely intensive intervention agency, will last or whether there will be a place for such an agency under a democratic set up. That decision, Gen. Buhari said, will be up to Nigerians. For now his preoccupation is to rehabilitate infrastructure and reorientate the people towards a new, effective and efficient way of executing uninflated contracts without kickbacks and without consuming mobilisation fees. Said Gen. Buhari to PTF contractors: "If you perform well, you get a hand shake. If you perform badly, you get a handcuff."

Article on Ribadu - by Abubakar Adamu, MSc, MCILT July, 2006

Any society riddled with corruption will not grow and develop because of the negative inference of corrupt practices. Corruption kills initiative and innovation. If an individual or a group who stands to fight the vices and gets the Lord’s blessing, people should give them encouragements and support and pray for them.

A good leader acts as a model of outstanding citizen and inspirational figure and guides individual and the community to grow. I draw my inspiration and personal development from many sources. Apart from my immediate family and friends, many other people influenced me and do not know their effect on me. I want to mention few people who guided me in my formative years: “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe was the first book I read completely and, since then, I have read most of Achebe’s books. Professor Chinua Achebe is therefore my literacy and literary influence. My interest in reading and writing was kindled by the works of Chinua Achebe.

My spiritual development was nurtured by my local Islamic teacher (Malam Isa Oshafu) and Malam Lawal Kalarawi, a popular preacher from Kano, for his simple and practical teachings. The fire-burning passion to fight and support human right is uplifted by Chief Gani Fawehinme’s human right campaigns --  both legal and moral. My political awareness was initiated by listening to the songs of Nigeria's and Africa's most popular artist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. My educational development and continual learning were actualised because of good government policies and opportunities offered by the good leaderships of Governor Joseph Gomwalk and Governor Solomon Lar of Plateau State, who awarded me scholarships for further studies.

People who make a little difference to your life should be the people one should admire and praise. The thieving politicians and government officials are not worth our adulation anymore. Why are some people fearful and scared of the name of Nuhu Ribadu and the EFCC and cannot praise their work? Those who made their money in legitimate ways and through hard work should have no fear of the agents of EFCC. The intellectual giant of Nigeria and Africa Professor Wole Soyinka, entrepreneurial guru  Alhaji Dangote, transport magnate Chiief Ilodiebe of Ekene Dili Chukwu, and others are enriching and adding values to other people’s life. They may or may not be President Obasanjo's friends; Ribadu will have no interest in their business because people are gaining from their giving and sacrifices.

Corruption and indiscipline in Nigeria have been going on most of my childhood and now in my adult life. If we want a safer country, we all have to aspire and work towards  a fair and just society;  wishing and praying for it is not enough. If we are waiting for our leaders to reform themselves, then we are part of the problem. The bad guy will not change easily, until he or she is named and shamed and also punished in equal measure. It is the case of good cop and bad cop; Malam Ribadu is on the side of good guys to bring criminals to justice. Armed robbery, political assassinations, and civil rebellions are symptoms of people’s lost hope for the future.

The murder of Engineer Funsho Williams, a governorship aspirant of Lagos State, is the continued political decays of competitive politics in Nigeria.

Chinua Achebe wrote in “Things Fall Apart” that, if bones are mention in a conversation, an old person feels uncomfortable. As was the case with the hero of the book, Okonkwo, his father was considered "efulefu" (a man without a title in Igbo community, or a toothless old woman). Okonkwo grew up to be among the respected elders in and around Umuofia; his father’s past made him unease. So those baddies who have wasted the country resources and undermine Nigeria's development are unease with the activities of the EFCC. The EFCC project has the backing and support of overseas governments and financial sectors, especially in the UK and USA. I think some Nigerians are beginning to be bored, tired of the stigma that all Nigerians are corrupt and crooks. The majority of Nigerians are honest and hardworking; they want to reclaim their dignity and self respect. The lawless and the thieves must be dealt with by the law.

Whatever the inequities and shortcomings of Obasanjo's government, the EFCC project should be evolving. I do not know the operative work of EFCC agents. The law says a suspect is presumed  innocent until proven guilty. I understand and share other people’s concern about our judicial system; I think some of Nigerian judges are doing their best under the circumstances. So, do not worry if you are not friendly with Obasanjo, Ribadu and the EFCC agents; government finance is meant for the people, keep your hands off public money and you will not be bothered by the Security Services.

Collectively Nigerians must start to acknowledge those who are working for the good of the county and those working against the country. They are starting again with "Interim Government" plot. Leave Obasanjo alone, he and his government are leaving Nigeria their legacy. It is left to those wishing to takeover the reign to give us their agenda or plot, not another diversion as the so-called ‘Third Term’ plot.

If Nigeria wants to be respected again and before investments come, we must shed the image of corruption and be trustworthy. Nigeria is a union of proud nations of rich cultures and diversity; we must retain our identity and individuality, but work on what we have in common. What we all have in common are the basic necessities of life, welfare, and wealth. It is now also poignant in the lack of safety and security; armed robbers and mobs now rule. The Bible says: “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie with the kids.”

Our humble President Jonathan like Obama may not have the records and experience Buhari has, but he is the most democratic of all of them, with the fear of God and the determination to liberate our country. We believe in him and we know that he'll do well. Anybody who wants to change his paternity to Buharis is free to do so, but we will vote for Jonathan.

Experience and achievements can only be gotten if you have had the opportunities to serve in the past. It's a fact that buhari has past records and experiences because he had the opportunities of being at the helms of affairs before now.He was a former president through a military coup which truncated our thriving democracy then.I wonder why a man who once believed that democracy will not work now wants to rule Nigeria in the same capacity. His experience as a military head of state was that of a zombie and animal in human skin.We all know that the worst democracy is better than the best military rule.It was a regime where Nigerians were flogged and dehumanised. We do not want to witness that again.
His experience as the head of the ptf was a sectionalised one where about 99.9999% of ptf projects were done in the north. We preach one Nigeria and not a Nigeria that is polarised.
In this era of advocacy for youths and new hands,I believe that we truely need a change.I mean a change of ideas, mindset and a whole lot of other things.

Nuhu Ribadu was born in Yola, Adamawa State, on November 21, 1960. He attended Aliyu Mustapha Primary School Yola from 1966 to1973 and Yelwa Government Secondary School, from 1973-1977. Between 1978 and 1980, he was at the College of Preliminary Studies, CPS, Yola, for his A-level studies.
In 1980, he gained admission to study law at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, graduating in 1983. He graduated from the Nigerian Law School and was called to the bar in 1984. After his national service, he joined the Nigeria Police, where he rose to become head of the Legal and Prosecution Department, Police Headquarters, Abuja. His 18-year service in the Nigeria Police culminated in his appointment as pioneer Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in April, 2003.

Prior to his appointment as the Chairman of EFCC, Ribadu served as key operational officer in the General Investigation Department and the Force Criminal Investigation Department of the of the Nigerian Police. He was also a member of the highly commended Failed Banks Tribunal that sanitized the rottenness in the Nigerian Banking sector of the late eighties. He helped pioneer the setting up of the Legal and Prosecutions Department of the Nigerian Police, a unit that served as think tank and policy nerve center of the police.

Ribadu has been recipient of several awards as a police officer, prosecutor and Chairman, EFCC. He received the Inspector General of Police Awards in 1997, 1998 and 2000 and the Special Commendation of Mr. President in 2005, for the successful prosecution of several advance fee fraud, banking fraud and sundry economic crime cases.

He was also specially commended by the Accountant General of the Federation for successfully prosecuting some corrupt public servants in 1999. He was a key member of the Economic Management Team from 2003 to 2008 that initiated and drove the wide ranging public sector reforms, which laid the foundations for the socio-economic rejuvenation of Nigeria. Alongside this responsibility, he also served as a member of the Presidential Committee on Trade Malpractices, the National Joint Intelligence Board, the National Committee on Public Service Reforms and the National Cybercrime Working Group. Ribadu has been widely acknowledged as bringing to his job a deep passion and an exemplary sense of dedication and efficiency. In three years, the EFCC under his leadership built the now most celebrated Crimes Training and Research Institute in the sub-region. The agency also recorded about 200 criminal convictions, a record that is far ahead of the total record of the police in its 147 years of existence, and far ahead of the Attorney-General’s office in the 49 years of the country’s post-colonial history.
These achievements helped make the EFCC a reference Law Enforcement Agency on the continent; and the bold investigation, prosecution, and conviction of Nigeria’s hitherto untouchable politicians and businessmen earned him the reputation of being a foremost and respected anti-corruption crusader in the world. It is to his record that he rejected a N30 million bribe from one of the country’s major money laundering offenders in 2005, although the most sensational report of his ethical conduct thus far was the 2007 rejection of a $15 million bribe from a former governor from one of Nigeria’s Niger Delta states. The businessman has been convicted for the crime and the former governor is currently undergoing trial. In acknowledgement of these modest achievements, he was promoted Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), in March 2007; the African Union put him on its advisory board on anti-corruption matters; and he was lately invited to join the advisory board of the friends of the World Bank/UNODC initiative on stolen asset recovery.
Recognizing the increasing trans-border dimension of financial and economic crimes, Ribadu, a regular attendee at the annual INTERPOL retreats, led an enforcement initiative that led to the founding of the West African Conference of Police Chiefs, and which is today a strong mechanism in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism in West Africa today. Mr. Ribadu holds an LLM degree with emphasis on the jurisprudence of corruption in Nigeria from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria.

In 2008, he was at the Harvard Business School where he did a program in the strategic management of law enforcement agencies. Since 2004, notable newspapers and magazines in Nigeria have repeatedly voted Ribadu, Man of the Year, in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a committed crusader against corruption and other related crimes. Ribadu’s modest achievements in EFCC, most notable amongst which are the delisting of Nigeria from the FATF List of Non-Cooperative Countries & Territories, admission into the prestigious Egmont Group and the withdrawal of the US Treasury advisory on Nigeria by the FINCEN.

He has also attracted donor support from European Union (EU), UNODC, UNDP, World Bank, and a host of others running into millions of US dollars, and also built an effective collaborative effort with the FBI, SOCA [UK], Metropolitan Police [UK], Dutch Police, German Police, South African Police and a host of other Law Enforcement Agencies in the world. In 2008, Ribadu completed the senior executive course of the Nigeria Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies where he was conferred with the Membership of the National Institute, MNI.

In June 2010, Ribadu was awarded the Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) by Babcock University, Ogun State, in recognition of his "loyal breeding", "lofty aim" and "resolute courage" as well as his "fierce stance against corruption in the face of sponsored disgrace and certain death that has resulted into positive changes and global acclaim hitherto considered impossible". Until recently, Ribadu was a senior fellow at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford University, as well as a visiting fellow at the Center for Global Development, Washington, DC. Ribadu is married to Zara, a lawyer, and they are blessed with six children. Ribadu enjoys watching football and reading books on human rights, politics, corruption and economic and financial crimes.

We love this Man,and countries like Nigeria need fresh mind like that of Ribadu to move forward. This is our time, Join me now !!

Buhari's political agenda is almost unquestionable, same as his party CPC. Unfortunately same can't be said of ACN and PDP with the later been the worse.

All we hear of on Ribadu is Anti-corruption even though the whole thing was one sided. When he weeds out corruption from the land, what next?
The latest on GEJ is that the Naira is going to be devalued bc GEJ and his Aganga minister are running around campaingning for an election they won't win. Health workers are on strike, foreign reserve depleted, the man stands on TV saying "I never thought I would be were I am today, " no wonder he is such an utter failure. Whatever GEJ is telling us to he would do in the next 4 years, how many of them has he done in the past 1 year.
The Buhari-Bakare train has remained consistent on their plans for this nation and support for them is on the rise, despite no television or radio jingle yet. Let's await their soon to be unveiled manifesto and, outside rigging, this men are certain to occupy Aso Rock come May. Buhari 2011!

We want results not stories. That is what GEJ stands for.

It's a pity that people like you base their future on people's inaccurately perceived personality and not track record. Do not even compare Obama with GEJ as Obama emerged from a well enlightened democratic process. GEJ on the hand is in the circle of looters and thieves and i don't expect him to be any different.

Really! I think one of the results is trying to bring Ibori back or Atiku's accusations of rigged PDP primaries etc. For me GEJ is a PUPPET running for retain presidency just to protect the interest of the very few Nigerians that are responsible for the 70% of the challenges we face today as a nation.

Pardon my curiousity, can you tell me a few of the results he has achieved both as Bayelsa Governor and president that you as a citizen has benefited from?

And all we hear about Buhari is PTF that was also one sided and concentrated only in the north, CPC did not have any primaries, but Buhari imposed himself on them, the rule was to reel out their achievements, not castigate, so check out the log in Buhari first, and do you also know the party under which Abacha's thieving son is contesting for governor in Kano state.

Some Achievements of GEJ include:

no fuel scarcity

four airlines (Arik, Continental, Delta and United), with direct flights from the United States (US)

five functional international airports.

the reopening of three textile mills in Kaduna that had previously been closed including the United Nigeria Textile Mills Ltd.; which has reopened as a result of accessing funds from the N200 billion textile industry bail out funds leading to the re engagement of 2000 workers that were laid off when the company went out of business.

addition of one new Federal University in each of the six geo-politcal zones for which work has already begun. The six new federal universities did not exist last year

etc,

You forgot to include;
1. Upsurge in kidnap incidents in SE spreading to all other parts of Nigeria (two people were kidnaped in Lagos this month)
2. Bombings which kicked off in Bayelsa and now spread to Abuja Eagle square, Bauchi, Borno, Jos
3. The recent stampede in PHC killing 13 People - they died for democracy quote Mrs Jonathan
4. The stampede during the rice distribution by the same Mrs Jonathan - I believe those ones got injured for Jesus, no be so
5. The alarming depletion of foreign reserve
6. The 5 month strike by University Lecturers in SE on the implemenatation of agreed remunerations - within the same period GEJ approved universities on paper ,

Get a life mate. Do you call all these achievements?

It's a shame, an average University graduate isn't literate enough to operate a computer system and yet GEJ intends to create more of such schools. Talk about a so called scholar not sound enough to identify possible solutions to our existing problems. Me think a junior secondary school should be have all needed skills to operate a PC.
