President Goodluck Jonathan has suspended the Minister of Interior, Emmanuel Iheanacho.

Mr Iheanacho has been directed to hand over to his counterpart in the Ministry of Labour, Emeka Wogu, who will, in addition to his present portfolio, oversee that ministry.

This development may be connected with the protests in some parts of the country after Mr Jonathan was announced winner of the presidential polls. It may also be seen as the beginning of an imminent shakeup of his cabinet.

The Imo State born minister, a retired Navy Captain, was appointed substantive Minister of Interior on April 6, 2010, when Mr.Jonathan, as Acting President, announced his new cabinet

A statement by the spokesman to the president, Ima Niboro, said that the suspension comes "as a result of a number of lapses in the political leadership of the ministry traceable to his personal and official conduct. For now, his continued manning of the ministry is not in the interest of the nation."

The Ministry has under it the following agencies: Nigeria Immigration Service; Nigeria Prisons service; The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps; Department of National Civic Registration.

The[b] Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps[/b] is saddled with the responsibility of;

i. Maintenance of peace and order in the society

ii. Provision of security and monitoring services before, during and after electoral exercise.

iii. Protection and safety of lives and properties at war and peace times.

iv. Protection of Federal, State and Local Government infrastructures and projects.

v. Protection and rescue of the civil populace during disasters and emergencies.

vi. Provision of emergency medical services.

vii. Arresting with or without a warrant, detain, investigate and institute legal proceedings by or in the name of the Attorney General of the Federation.

viii. Provision of Intelligence information on trouble spots, individuals and organization.

ix. Monitoring and supervision of Private Guard Companies

One of the conditions given by Ohakim and the Imo State House of Assembly to the Weak President to get the Imo State Magic Votes was the removal of the Minister of Interior and having kept their end of the bargain by delivering  the Magic Votes, I believe it would have amounted to betrayal of trust if he had not removed the Minister.
