Give us meters and watch the sector turn around immediately. Mass Metering is the key. Allow 3rd parties who have no link with discos import and supply meters massively.

Am all for meters, but then there is the problem of meter bypass.

(My former landlord once had to pay a penalty to the local DISCO because one of his tenants bypassed the meter, and vamoosed without paying for the free power)

A lot of people might not be able to afford to pay for electricity bill. This government is clueless

The corruption going on in this country, even the common man is part of it.
Until we totally scrap all this subsidies, Nigerians would forever remain lazy and never wake up to realities.
Imagine if fuel subsidy was scraped?
The $300million dollar we spend monthly would be used to develop other sector and maybe the electricity sector would have been more stable hence less consumption of fuel.
More billionaires would build private refineries without political cabals but the truth is that if they should dare venture, they'll be definitely run at a loss..

On the other hand, due to low revenues accruing to the DISCOS and GENCOS...they cannot make enough money to make things better for you and me. (especially when 40% of Nigerians don't pay for power )

After all, when GSM companies were charging sky high prices for sim and for bad service some 17 years ago....we all cried..but we paid, and they took our money made huge profits...which paid for the telecoms infrastructure we have. And prices fell by the way.

Though electricity has improved compared to how it was in the last 16 years, the foresightedness of our leader to bringing solar especially for the people who are not connected to national grid is a good initiative. The caping regulation signed by Mr. P too is superb.

Prof. Osinbajo, who was represented by the Special Assistant to the President on Infrastructure, Engr. Ahmad Zakari, noted that government would be investing over $3 billion in the coming years to improve transmission and distribution infrastructure across the country.

For those who always claim they have never benefited from Nigeria, this is one of the ways you do. Sadly, that benefit is about to end.

But the question is, what's the essence of having a government when all these benefits, including fuel subsidy, are removed? undecided

To enjoy these changes and not just to suffer for it while some greedy ones take advantage of it, I pray Osinbajo should take over from Buhari. This is when Nigeria can move forward. This vice President has the brain to move Nigeria forward. If Only Osinbajo and Ngozi Iweala happened. OMG! But I know it is impossible. Ngozi will never leave her new role.

Nice analysis

You one of the smartest on this forum

Don't mind those stupid assholes that don't see MNK and Igboho as their saviour

To me if as a nigerian you ain't supporting MNK and Ighoho

You are stupid, foolish and settle for less kind of person
SpecialAdviser:
What this will translate to is that you will need up to 30k to have power monthly.

If fuel subsidy is also removed, you will be spending up 20k on transport monthly.

Since food price is already high, you need 50k for feeding monthly.

Other welfare you need 20k to maintain monthly.

This gives a total of 120k for an average Nigerian to survive.

If you are doing job that fetch you 60k monthly ,60-120 = -60k monthly

With your debt you are going to either hang yourself or become an armed robber to survive.

Meanwhile, senators are going home with up to 30million monthly.

Looting will also be increased with politicians indulging in all manner of evil ritualism to stay in the game.

Bandits will kidnap more people and even police will shoot more people who refuse to corporate. We all know the evil of subsidy and why it's good to be removed but what about stopping corruption first.

And some mum.us think MNK or Igboho are not fighting a just course. While you slowpoke.s swallow all the nonsense thrown at you, Is it not time you started hailing those fighting to bring about the real change? Shame on all of you.

Just maybe you have a point but the bigger problem is decentralization of the energy sector completely. They broke it down to genco, transcos and discos when the first need to decentralized it to regions or zones. So many thing is to big for jus a few to run. There will always be problems..

The money saved will most likely be siphonedbby a handful of people and the masses will be the ultimate losers. Until corruption is fixed, any move that takes money from the masses and put in few public servants control will be resisted. That's why Buhari's failure to wholeheartedly fight corruption will negate any fake policy he comes up with. He knows this and is trying a negotiate a corrupt deal for his Fulani brothers as against fighting corruption which is our foundational problem.

Does anyone have an accurate idea of how much govt subsidies per unit of electricity?

I would like to calculate by how much increase the bill will be by next year once the subsidy is removed.

Well, DISCOS at least run on a regional basis. Abuja DISCO for example operates in only 5 states. Enugu DISCO also operates in the SE, and so on.

I never heard of electricity subsidy till buhari and his gang came in. It's not like we have an improved standard of living as the cost of commodities have increased up to 300%.

Electricity tariffs have been increased up to 3 times already and the light situation has not improved an inch. Now, the government is saying we will have heavier electricity tariffs waiting for us next year. Smh.

Bringing in this government was mortal sin, fatal mistake, unfortunately, I have to share in the consequences of the choices of other people.

This will still not guarantee steady power supply.

Same incompetence will prevail and they will be nobody to blame. This government has pushed Nigeria to the brink of separation and there seems to be no tunnel, talk less of a light at the end of it.

The problem is not who the discos were sold to (Dangote is the owner of a cement company, despite not having carried a cement bag or worked in a cement factory as a young man) but that the DISCOS were not allowed to make a profit that would let them make things better due to them not being allowed to charge cost reflective tarrifs.

That's why the subsidy has to go...that means DISCOS would be free to fix prices in a way that enables them to make a profit.
