You've said it. What baffles me is how we can have 24 hours constant power in the whole nation. It's a shame Benin Republic enjoy this benefit while they are not even up to Lagos State. Our leaders should be ashamed when addressing outside the country
Beancounter94:

On the other hand, due to low revenues accruing to the DISCOS and GENCOS...they cannot make enough money to make things better for you and me. (especially when 40% of Nigerians don't pay for power )

After all, when GSM companies were charging sky high prices for sim and for bad service some 17 years ago....we all cried..but we paid, and they took our money made huge profits...which paid for the telecoms infrastructure we have. And prices fell by the way.

No sane country subsidizes electricity and fuel. They are best left in the hands of the private sector in their entirety.

If you can not afford them, relocate to your village and start a farm.

Nobody is subsidizing electricity bills in the East.
Let's get that one clear..
The East pays much for unavailable power all year..

I never heard of electricity subsidy till buhari and his gang came in. It's not like we have an improved standard of living as the cost of commodities have increased up to 300%.

Electricity tariffs have been increased up to 3 times already and the light situation has not improved an inch. Now, the government is saying we will have heavier electricity tariffs waiting for us next year. Smh.

Bringing in this government was mortal sin, fatal mistake, unfortunately, I have to share in the consequences of the choices of other people.

The power subsidy was there before Buhari came in....it has always been there, especially since the law setting up the DISCOS and gencos made Government the sole controller of prices via NBET.. (They used to call it 'counterpart funding...and half came from government, the other from international lending bodies, first world countries, etc)

And prices have to go up with subsides...the amount that you used to subsidsie in one year may jump up because of rising costs...and losses. So either you raise subsides..meaning more loans, or you reduce them from time to time...less loans.

This will still not guarantee steady power supply.

Same incompetence will prevail and they will be nobody to blame. This government has pushed Nigeria to the brink of separation and there seems to be no tunnel, talk less of a light at the end of it.

Sai sai sai....

It will, if adequate and due diligence is observed. Last admin failed at this, that is why are where we are now. This Administration is even trying to bring in solar initiative through REA, solar power Naija of NESP etc to power those who are not connected to the national grid.

The last administration made a very wrong move, such move is frustrating this Administration's effort in the energy sector, you don't sell energy to incompetence fellows just because they are your friends, those ones handled it the way they like, liquidated Skye Bank in the process and here we are, the FG is rectifying these problems.

Though electricity has improved compared to how it was in the last 16 years, the foresightedness of our leader to bringing solar especially for the people who are not connected to national grid is a good initiative. The caping regulation signed by Mr. P too is superb.

Prof. Osinbajo, who was represented by the Special Assistant to the President on Infrastructure, Engr. Ahmad Zakari, noted that government would be investing over $3 billion in the coming years to improve transmission and distribution infrastructure across the country.

It's obvious that you don't have shame.. who are you explaining all this to?

Plus, when you are selling shoes at N10000 a pair, and government comes in and makes you sell them at N4000 a pair to help poor Nigerians, and pays you a subsidy of N2000 a pair, especially since you bought the shoes from the wholesaler at N9000 a pair, shebi you no go do sharp practices to stay afloat?

A lot of people might not be able to afford to pay for electricity bill. This government is clueless

Even when it was sold cheaper, many still couldn't afford the charges, so what are you talking about? The REA and NESP'S solar power Naija initiative and really helping out by installing solar in the rural areas especially those areas that are not connected to the national grid.

But Buhari is doing the same mistake! Selling state properties to his friends and cronies! Dangote refinery, allocation of oils blocks, all federal appointments to name a few.

The last administration didn’t bring hunger and chronic poverty! They didn’t bring worsening security situation, they didn’t bring heardsmen rampant killings and kidnapping! They didn’t bring iswap!

In my (poor opinion) most African countries don't try to do what we do...give everyone, villager and city dweller power....thus overstretching their grid. (Cameroon still has some parts of the country that are not connected to any grid anywhere.)

Also, some African countries pay more per kwh of power than we do eg Ghana. (The subsidy they want to remove is supposed to cover the losses the DISCOS incur in selling power at a low price...but due to rising costs, it cannot adequately cover all losses)

Even with the incompetence by those gej admin sold the sector to, this admin is still able to improve power across the nation, I remember how we use to suffer for light in those days, if we are lucky, five minutes light out of 24 hours.

Power has not improved in Nigeria.

Especially since Lagos alone needs 10000mw daily to have 24 hour power..and that's a figure from eleven years ago.

We need to generate far more than we have, and we need to fix transmission as well.

That's the same thing people said when GEJ tried to remove subsidy...and back then times were better...with higher incomes. Think of the economy...

Politicans loot because we Nigerians let them loot.
Also, the same arguments were made when GEJ tried to remove subsidy, and also when we had GSM come into the country...that it was too hard on the pockets of Nigerians. Obasanjo, in the case of GSM refused to listen to the people subtly calling for subsides on GSM. Today, we have home internet and widespread telephony than we did under NITEL and the old Posts and Telegraphs...because we allowed MTN, Glo and Econet/Vmobile/Celtel/zain/Airtel to make profits at our expense...profits that were poured into telecoms infreastructure.

1.We are already importing at high levels. And the importation of things like fuel happens because subsidies means that there isn't enough money in refining fuel at home...plus NNPC since 2016 has been forced to spend most of its profit importing and then subsidsing fuel so that we can be happy. Thus NNPC barely has money to repair and build new refinereis. And no private sector person would come in (unless you are Dangote)...because selling fuel after refining it for N200 and above at N166 or less is not a good proposition

Infact we have been subsidsing fuel since the late 1980s and it's legacy is bad refinereis...because subsidy means we sell fuel below its production cost. When you do that...zero profit to keep things well maintained.

Besides, all West African countries pay higher for fuel...including Niger...which as a result has enough profit to keep its refinery running..and even export petrol to three other African countries..including us.

2.Nigerians, inclduing APC are not ready to fight corruption.

So when should we remove it then? When oil rises to $150 A BARREL....or when you Nigerians are ready to fight corruption.?

GEJ too was a corrupt man with his group. Even as he meant well by removing subsidy, him and his group corruption wouldn't make the economy sound to stand the pressure which the subsidy removal will bring on the masses.

Buhari also a failure, a worse corrupt man who killed the economy with his incompetence wants to remove subsidy too.

Do you really understand my line of argument? We the masses should rise up to the stupidity of these regimes. Let them account for their looting and force them to fix the economy.

Imagine Rotimi Amaechi taking billions to build railway. How much does it cost in other countries? What about all the corruption in arms procurement? Do you really think Nigeria will stand what will come after the subsidy removal? Ok let them remove all and we see how you can stand the chaos that will come with it. May be that will be the real cracker that will help Nigerians fight together.

How can lawmakers be collecting all these allowances in a country with this kind of poverty? My brother once all these subsidies are remove, I will advise you be careful how you move because insecurities may not be curtailed

But in the meantime, subsidy has to go, because it is one of the things driving us into more and more debt, and stifling job and economic growth.

They tried removing subsidy from petrol, they did not succeed, now they've moved to the power sector. Must the led/people always be at the receiving. Right from coming to power since 6yrs ago, all this Govt. keep saying is "we will, we will" and they end up not doing anything. Here they go again "we will"

Anyway, if we want 24 hour power fixed, allow the DISCOS and GENCOS charge cost reflective tarrifs....it is that simple. You want a ferrari, you pay ferrari price, not Toyota corolla price.
