On the other hand, due to low revenues accruing to the DISCOS and GENCOS...they cannot make enough money to make things better for you and me. (especially when 40% of Nigerians don't pay for power )

After all, when GSM companies were charging sky high prices for sim and for bad service some 17 years ago....we all cried..but we paid, and they took our money made huge profits...which paid for the telecoms infrastructure we have. And prices fell by the way.

Low revenue? Stop making stupid excuses for these guys.

Do you know how many times they have increase electric bills coupled with the crazy bill they give to individuals with no prepaid meter?

I could remember reading a report that says these guys purposely don't buy electricity from the gencos, they prefer to sell darkness to us.

They should tell us all the subsidy they are paying and how much. Am hearing this for the first time. So with all the darkness over all this year's we pay 30b monthly to subsidize power. I now know why all this Nepa and PHCN disco were never serious people like those in Petroleum sector. They already got their profit from FG even before ending of every month. So any money they get from people is just addition

The last administration made a very wrong move, such move is frustrating this Administration's effort in the energy sector, you don't sell energy to incompetence fellows just because they are your friends, those ones handled it the way they like, liquidated Skye Bank in the process and here we are, the FG is rectifying these problems.

Though electricity has improved compared to how it was in the last 16 years, the foresightedness of our leader to bringing solar especially for the people who are not connected to national grid is a good initiative. The caping regulation signed by Mr. P too is superb.

Prof. Osinbajo, who was represented by the Special Assistant to the President on Infrastructure, Engr. Ahmad Zakari, noted that government would be investing over $3 billion in the coming years to improve transmission and distribution infrastructure across the country.

2.Also, from your report... DISCOS reject power largely because they don't earn enough revenue to pay for the power.

Daily Trust recalls that before the tariff hike early September, most of the DisCos had been complaining of high operations’ costs occasioned by poor income from consumers, hence the need for tariff increase to enable them perform optimally

And note that the tarrif hike that they were granted 1) was not high enough 2) was eventually suspended anyway after nearly 2 weeks. 3) due to chroncially low prices, any money earned from the hike would also go to paying off previous debts and so on.

Good morning.

Discos reject power largely because most Nigerians aren't metered and at the end will pay no matter if the get light or not. I just paid bills for months our transformer was spoilt.

The Discos are government controlled hence, corruption as usual is high. The pad stats and collect government subsidy while rejecting most of the power generated by the Gencos. Most gas power plants in Nigeria generated less than half it's installed capacity

The only solution to the electricity situation in Nigeria is mass metering and more investment in the Transco.
yes the cost of electricity will go up almost 250% , but if businesses are sure of uninterrupted power for over 15 hours a day (at least), the money used in powering generators will cover the bills.

And even then the price is not set by the DISCOS, it is set by the government. At the end of the day, income is not enough, even with estimated billing.(When government sets your price, it means you lose. And the subsidy they pay for the losses resulting from price controls...is not always adequate to cover said losses).

Plus GENCOS have to pay for gas in dollars (Gas companies, NGC included don't accept naira)..and at the rate naira is falling against the dollar.

The Discos are government controlled hence, corruption as usual is high. The pad stats and collect government subsidy while rejecting most of the power generated by the Gencos. Most gas power plants in Nigeria generated less than half it's installed capacity

DISCOS are largely private companies, as are GENCOS. Transmission is all that is in government hands. (There is a reason why power is no longer a separate ministry...the duties have fallen drastically)

Only one DISCO is government run..and even that one is on the market for a willing buyer (the disco that supplies the NE)

The only solution to the electricity situation in Nigeria is mass metering and more investment in the Transco.

Agreed, and government should let DISCOS and GENCOS control their prices/set their prices. Because when a businessman or woman is forced to sell at a loss, either they do sharp practicies to stay in business, or fold. Like the NE discos's investor.

Am all for meters, but then there is the problem of meter bypass.

(My former landlord once had to pay a penalty to the local DISCO because one of his tenants bypassed the meter, and vamoosed without paying for the free power)

That's secondary. We need meters all over.

They should sort out the corruptions within them and stop making us pay for their nonsense and stop defending these guys , unless you're benefiting from them, probably a staff of the discos.

Good morning.

I get your point but the fact is the privatization of PHCN was ill conceived, it was motivated by greed and selfishness.

People rushed to acquire the discos because they wanted to enjoy free revenue collection, they had no plans to improve the sector, they had no proven competence in managing power distribution.

Look at the trend we ve been seeing since 2015, a community or an individual spends money to acquire a transformer, erect poles to connect to a grid, discos comes in after all has been done to distribute bills with no recourse to compensating the community for monies spent.

Business owners especially manufacturers are over billed, in most cases billed on estimation even when there are records to prove that there was o supply in area for months , these criminals will still send bills that must be paid.

Why wont they meter everyone, why the emphasis on estimation? Where in the world is it done? Even neighboring African countries that are less developed than Nigeria enjoy light because they re metered.

There is no incentive to encourage individuals to generate their own power and distribute e.g an estate, after all there are people who can afford small turbines and power them and distribute, is it being encouraged ? No.

No investment in new distribution infrastructure, when last did you see a helicopter carrying a high tension cable for installation, that was during the days of old NEPA.

Discos behave with impunity, customer complaints are not resolved or even acknowledged, the rip off has got to stop because its not sustainable, it will get to a point where people will say come and carry your light.

Any one supporting this kind of racket is either a beneficiary or living in self deception.

What has been done to previous owners of discos of didn't perform? Nothing. angry

oga the government -federal and state- has 50% stake in the discos and NERC regulates price hence the government controls electricity in Nigeria.

The Gencos are 100% private owner, the should be allowed to build and distribute generated power. Moreover, if the Aso villa has a dedicated power plant, isn't it hypocritical to stop states to get a dedicated power plant ? without them connecting it to the national grid ?

And yes, the hikes aren't enough to raise cash because at the end of the day, the tarrifs aren't cost reflective.

GSM companies were allowed by Obasanjo to charge cost reflective tarrifs, for sometimes very bad service then (at one point one could not call a MTN number with a ECONET number, and neither could call a NITEL land line)..and they used the profits earned to make things much better than they were in 2003!

At the end of the day all those changes mean squat if DISCOS and GENCOS cannot charge cost reflective tarrifs.

Note that I am not opposed to your changes, but they can only work with money...and money can only come from cost reflective tarrifs, or from the government aggresievely taxing the informal sector (70% of our economy)

Read the report. And you would see why.

Plus, if government forces you to run your business at a loss, and pays you a fixed subsidy that does not cover your losses, you would engage in sharp practices to stay afloat, or you would fold.

The discos are being run at a loss. That's why sharp practices like estimated billing and paying for darkness are rampant within the sector. Government polices forcing them to run at a loss has led them there.

What cost do they really incure? Tell me one new major infrastructure a disco near you has built for power distribution.

People like you are the problem, you dont even know the meaning of the word 'cost reflective tariff'.

In your eyes all Nigerians are very wealthy so they should spend all their wealth in paying for electricity that is not supplied.

Another useful idiot talking, I can bet you ve never paid electricity bills out of your own pocket before.
