Richard and Lydia (names have been changed) had been in a relationship for about two years. Richard lives in Lagos while Lydia lives in PH.

They are apparently in love albeit their challenges which is not uncommon to any relationship.

Some few weeks ago, Richard invited his girlfriend Lydia to Lagos to celebrate her birthday. This was supposed to be the first birthday they will spend together as their birthdays have always fallen on working days or periods they cannot spend together. To prove his love to Lydia, Richard decided to make the birthday very special in his own way. Little did he know that what was supposed to be special will turn out to cast doubt on the relationship.

At this period in time, Lydia’s friend who was living with her was visiting Lagos to do some shopping. Lydia thought that traveling together will make her visit complete, so she suggested to her boyfriend to make provision to host Ada, whom he has not met but had spoken to through the phone.

Although Richard thought it might be some distraction, he chose to wow his girlfriend by hosting her with her friend. To make his girlfriend feel special and respected, Richard booked a suite in a lovely hotel. This was not a financially convenient period for him, but he was bent on giving Lydia a good treat.

The day finally came. Richard scouted some few confectioneries to get a cake decorated in Lydia’s name. Got a bottle of Champagne and rushed to the hotel, where he arranged with the Hotel management to present the cake and champagne to his girlfriend when she arrives. He made his plan clear to the management who agreed to give Lydia a befitting birthday.

The receptionist was to present the cake while another staff was to present the bottle of champagne; this was to be accompanied with a birthday song when she’s in her room.

But Richard told the hotel management that his girlfriend was visiting with her friend but were coming into the town at different times. To ensure that the cake is not handed to the wrong person, he wrote Lydia’s name on the cake wrap. He also promised to give the receptionist a sign indicating who his girlfriend is, different from her girlfriend.

Then he hurriedly left for the airport to pick his girlfriend. They were both excited seeing each other after about a month of being apart. After which he took her to the hotel. On getting to the reception, the receptionist was not on seat. He asked after her and he was told she was at the restroom.

The girlfriend joked about Richard knowing the receptionist by name. He was given his room key by another staff. As soon as he entered the suite, he got a call from the reception. The lady was worried that she had missed the opportunity of knowing the person who was to be presented the cake later that day. Richard over the phone promised to tactfully let the receptionist know when he leaves the hotel with Lydia.

After 1hr of spending exciting time together, they both choose to stroll around the area. When they dropped their room key with the receptionist, Richard tactfully winked to the receptionist, who understood that the lady with him was the birthday celebrant.

They were enjoying their time together when Ada called that her flight has been extended by an hour. Richard decided he needed to alert the receptionist so that planned can be made for the night crew to present the cake and champagne to Lydia (Richard wanted Ada to be present when the cake is presented to Lydia). So he pretended to Lydia that he needed to pick something at the hotel, where he quickly updated the receptionist of latest development.

To Richard’s surprise, the receptionist insisted that she will stay behind to do the presentation as she has never been a witness to such drama. She claimed Richard should not be concern as she lives not too far from the hotel. Richard was impressed and left the hotel with Lydia who was waiting in the car.

On getting to the airport, Ada called back to inform Lydia that her flight has been extended by another hour. Without showing his displeasure, Richard thought of how he could get through to the receptionist to leave as things have changed. Ada’s flight that was fixed for 4:10pm was now to take off by 6:10pm. But Richard had no choice but to wait endlessly. They finally welcomed Ada to Lagos about 7:30pm.

Lydia then suggested that they eat out before getting to the hotel, a treat Richard had earlier promised her. But Richard insisted they get to the hotel, apparently because he was worried the receptionist was still waiting. On getting out of the car, he rushed to the reception but met the night crew receptionist. He asked after the day’s shift receptionist by name. The night crew receptionist informed him that she had waited for a very long time for him, and that she tried calling but could not reach Richard (through the hotel form he filled).

At this time, Lydia became infuriated. Pulled Richard aside and asked what all the drama was all about. Richard told her not to worry. But Lydia will not take that for an answer. She insisted he leaves the reception for the room together. On getting to the room, Lydia angrily told Ada that Richard was having an affair with the receptionist. Richard only brush the accusation aside, as he knew what the whole drama was all about. He did not see anything wrong in her accusation although embarrassing, as this was happening before Ada.

Ada pleaded with Lydia not to draw a quick conclusion. Lydia insisted that Richard was used to doing this on a regular basis. This statement shocked Richard as he has never ask another woman out not to imagine having another affair. But he kept his calm knowing that soon she would feel stupid.
Not long afterward, there was a knock. The receptionist at night brought in the cake with the champagne. Ada was so shocked that she looked at Richard and quickly understood what all the drama was all about. She looked at Lydia expecting her to go down on her knees begging Richard for forgiveness now that it has become obvious that she acted stupidly.
But they were all wrong. Lydia made no move and was still boiling, insisting the Cake and champagne was just a camouflage. At this point, Richard was beginning to lose his calm. He looked at Lydia and asked why she was acting stupidly. She was not willing to apologize but insisted Richard was mischievous as such she cannot apologize.
This was not the first time Lydia had embarrassed Richard, accusing him of trying to cheat. Lydia once accused him when he saw her female friend’s phone number on his phone. She insists that Richard should never keep her friend’s number. This is one thing Richard does not understand. On another occasion, she accused him publicly of lustfully looking at a small girl serving in a restaurant, to such that the lady who was sitting on the same table immediately took her food away from the table.
What was meant to be a special day between them turned out to be the worst in their two years relationship. Richard is really confused. Why is Lydia suspicious of him? She’s never seen any text on his phone. He has never received a call from a gal before her. He is not a night crawler, whereas she is. She receives several calls from guys, whom she insists are mere friends. So on what basis should he continue the relationship? Despite his very tight schedule, he visits her ever month. What do you think Richard should do? He is scared of what other things might come up.
Lydia later apologized to Richard but he believes it was on the urging of Ada. His reason is because the next day Lydia reasoned that there wouldn’t have been any problem if Richard had not involved the receptionist or give her access to his number or even get familiar to the point of knowing her name.
Richard is convinced Lydia has some personal issue to resolve but is not willing to open up.

I realised Nairaland is for brief readers. This is a real life story of my very close friend. The girlfriend is unnecessarily suspecting him of having or wanting to have an affair, which has led to several public embarassment. Do you think he should call the relationship on the basis of this. The intention of this piece was to give Richard and his girlfriend a common leverage.
