African leaders slammed over vaccine coverage

Microsoft founder Bill Gates says some African countries are failing to deliver life-saving vaccines to children, hampering billiondollar efforts to save millions of lives and stamp out deadly diseases.

The magnate, who these days spends more time talking about the "miracle of vaccines" than software, spoke to AFP in a telephone interview ahead of an address to the World Health Assembly in Geneva Tuesday.

Gates's message: Technology is only as effective as the leaders delivering it.

Once you have vaccines invented and manufactured at low cost, and rich donors paying for them, "you have to have developing countries act to take the vaccines and get them out to all the kids."

"It is tragic when the last delivery piece holds it back," he said.

"You have some countries, northern Nigeria, or Chad or the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) where less than half the kids right now are getting the vaccines," he said, referring to polio immunization in those countries.

"They are just not putting good people on it, not tracking their results, not even getting out to parts of the country. The message has to be clear. They have to see this as their top priority. It hasn't been."

The world is 99 per cent toward making polio the second disease to be wiped out, after smallpox. The paralyzing disease, which once terrorized the developed world, exists now only in a few countries.

Nigeria, the world's most troublesome polio spot, saw a 95 per cent cut in cases last year due to revitalized immunization but is facing a lack of support from government leaders, which Gates attributed to the "distraction of the elections" in the country.

A spread to Chad and the DRC poses great risks for eradication efforts. The two countries carry 58 per cent of the total cases of polio this year.

"The key point is to help them get it right; many very, very poor countries do have 90 per cent coverage rates," Gates said.

When vaccines save lives it is "not because of hospitals or doctors or any of the expensive stuff. It doesn't require fancy equipment. Simply keeping the vaccination cold and getting them out to all the kids."

In Africa, millions of children die from diarrheal diseases and pneumonia - the vaccines are too expensive. At the same time, other deadly diseases such as malaria need new, low-cost vaccines.

Gates has been rallying hard for donors to keep funding up as the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization seeks to fill a $3.7-billion funding gap at its June 13 pledging conference.

Why all of a sudden is the nigerian govt being told to implement a 3 child per family policy by the WHO, this is all part of the agenda of population control in africa, they will enforce this policy by controlling the food supply - many african countries are totally dependant on importation of foreign foods - if an african country refuses to go along wiht the population control agenda they could find their food supply being cut off.
if you look at agribusinesses like Monsanto you will find out that they along with some other major multinational food manufacturers are aiming for total and complete control over the world's food supply - the aim is to have the power to determine who gets to eat and who gets to starve.

here is an excerpt from a wilki leaks dump which was reported in reuters explaining how Pfizer got nigeria to make an out of court settlement with respect to the children who died and suffered brain damage as  a result of being innoculated with a drug which is actually BANNED in europe, apparently the then attorney general Michael Aaondoaka who was threatening legal action against Pfizer was BLACKMAILED into dropping the case, perhaps the same treatment was used on Shekarau to convince him to change his story - hence his u turn:

You are comparing apples and oranges. The drug involved in the Pfizer case was experimental - i.e. its potential side effects had not been fully understood. Therefore there was an implicit risk of unknown side effects involving this drug.

Contrast this with the polio vaccine, which is a proven drug that has existed in its current form for over 20 years and with no fertility side effects.

Secondly, there is a peer reviewed journal article detailing the reasons behind the boycott in Northern Nigeria and it does not say that there were actual fertility problems, rather the so called 'leaders' made claims that the West was attacking Muslims with HIV, infertility drugs amongst others.

For avoidance of doubt, this is what a Muslim scholar said:

Embarrassed by the political undertone of the boycott, the prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, President of the International Fiqh Council, said: “In fact, I was completely astonished about the attitude of our fellow scholars of Kano towards polio vaccine. I disapprove of their opinion, for the lawfulness of such vaccine in the point of view of Islam is as clear as sunlight” [17]. Sheikh Qaradawi said that the same polio vaccine has been effective in over 50 Muslim countries, and blamed the SCSN for creating a negative image of Islam: “They distort the image of Islam and make it appear as if it contradicts science and medical progress”.

From the above, this belief about infertility had nothing to do with actual cases of infertility, it was simply Shekarau bowing to misinformation by so called Islamic leaders bent on stirring up anti-West sentiments.

While I accept that healthy scepticism is required especially in light of the issues with Pfizer, the government of Kano was thoroughly irresponsible in their approach. They refused results from two different studies showing the vaccine was safe, and there was never any indication of HIV or anti-fertility drugs ever established.

This process of misinformation had proceeded from the 1980s, when people (wrongly) believed fertility control would be administered via vaccines.

Hmmm, very strong point you made about the Polio vaccinations.
I heard of a report on youtube that the Iraq prisoners were injected with a drug that made them infertile.

So all those men that were locked up during the heat of the Iraq conflict from 2003 - 2007 were injected with drug to make them not able to have children. Hmm seems like a wicked/sinister war
