Only plan that would work is government completely removing fuel subsidy, and allowing the sector make a profit from selling petrol

That way, we would have enough profit and enough incentive for investment and growth in the petroleum sector.

Should have been done since 1993.

Thanks to our shameless and incompetent Europe based president. After almost 8 years in office as president and oil minister we are worse off than we were before you came into office.

Dunce!

That happened because Buhari made NNPC the sole importer of fuel, meaning that the loophole of 'importing' that was used to embezzle subsidy money was closed...meaning that NNPC took on itself the burden of subsidising fuel...and government paid up the equivalent of the subsidy NNPC spent to them so that they won't collapse.

Even then, NNPC cannot sustain the subsidy, so from time to time, price increases occur. This might be one of those times.

If we had allowed GEJ to sell at N165. will there be fuel scarcity? Or what parameters did you consider before your score

Fuel was 87 and there was a protest, now fuel is 250 and they are comfortably buying it.

More like

1.Fuel was N65 and then raised to N140, and then there was a protest, and then fuel was kicked down to N97 and then, some 3 years later, to N87....and keeping that price that low, came at the expense of our forex and other reserves.

2.Also, fuel is still N163-5. Where it sells above that is as a result of subsidy payments not being enough to cover the resultant loss NNPC incurres by selling fuel at N163-5 after importing it at N330 (as at last week, N282 as at one month ago, N232 as at June 2021)

3.NNPC has not been able to improve refining capacity for over 20 years because subsidy...meaning they cannot make enough of a profit to fix the refineries once staff salaries have been paid...

(N.B No, I am not telling you why your hero GEJ was bad or Buhari is good, I am telling you why GEJ wanted to remove subsidy in 2012...before you start abusing me or calling me names.)

No shame, why are we importing fuel, what happened to the national refineries. O wait, it has to be Dangote refinery abi, so the wealth goes to the elites, everything is monopolized, and stolen from the people.

You people should be having sense sometimes please. How will there be scarcity since he succumbs to every price pressure and pushes the burden to us? He's selling fuel more than x2 of what Jonathan sold to us.

Yet the same Buhari government is paying 3x more subsidy than Jonathan.

Note: I am not here to defend government.

1.NNPC import fuel at N330 and sell it at N163 , and government pays NNPC some money to cover the difference.

2.This means that NNPC cannot make a profit, and thus cannot get the money it needs to fix refineries, and crucially...build new ones. Also, investment is curtailed because no one wants to come and invest in refinery and lose money from selling refined fuel in the name of subsidy.

3.Dangote took loans from banks to build his refinery...which is how he can afford it..and the banks can afford to risk giving him loans because if he fails to pay back, they take over his lucrative other investments and pay themselves up.

4.This importation has been going on for years because in the good old days we wrecked our refineries by selling at a loss and paying NNPC a subsidy that did not cover the losses made from selling refined product below its production cost.....(one exec in TOTAL once pointed out that government, for example, did not pay for material refineries needed to refine crude into petrol)....so we ended up importing most of our need (by 2011, 6million liters of fuel were produced in the country, now it is none).

By the way, if subsidy goes, completely, there are 20 other competitiors waiting in the wings to commence work on refining. They can't because no one is going to finance your refinery dream if you end up losing money because government insists on you selling fuel below the production cost (see no 1).

This sound ridiculous

The substantial Petroleum Minister "endorses" plan to end fuel scarcity.

Who's office is supposed to end it outrightly or even prevent it from occuring in the first place?

You want Nigerians to begin rejoicing that our President and Minister of petroleum is thinking of doing what is his constitutional mandate to have prevented...?

And this is a wonderful news while we spend whole day queuing at petrol stations, isn't it?

Let's clap for our President for the endorsement, grin
Isn't it what you want op??

The problem is that most Nigerians think that fuel MUST be cheap. Meanwhile, its cost of production rises....as does its cost of transport, taxes, etc....

If Buhari kept fuel at N87, by now our subsidy costs would be entering 10 trillion annually. Our budget is not up to 30 trillion annually. Where do we get the money? (More loans). And we still won't have money to fix refineries, because the 10 trillion is going to keep NNPC from collapsing from importing fuel at N330 and selling it at N87.(your price)

Also, we pay for subsidy from crude oil revenues...meaning we lose dollars (already low crude oil prices till 6 weeks ago meant dollar supply is not enough) which negatively affects the value of the naira...which means prices rise.

Seriously, GEJ wanted to raise prices, not reduce them. Because he knew what was up. But because you Nigerians wanted low fuel prices, he listened, and gave you what we wanted...and eventually led to us losing more and more money.

Yet the same Buhari government is paying 3x more subsidy than Jonathan.

Because our fuel needs have risen due to rising population (not the same as 2012...)

And because smuggling is happening...(in all our neighbours, fuel is at least N350 per liter. Here it is N165 . Unless we build a big wall and man it with border guards, we can't stop it).

If we had allowed GEJ to sell at the N140 he was aiming for, by now not only would scarcity have ended, but there might have been enough revenue to commence domestic refining...and savings would have been enough.

Plus work would have started on the 3 refineries he was planning with the Chinese in 2010...
