NIMET predicts heavy rainfall in 2011

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), has predicted heavy rainfall that could result to flooding and landslides in many states this year.

Presenting the 2011 seasonal rainfall prediction by NIMET, the Minister of Aviation-Mrs Fidelia Njeze advised state governments to take the prediction by NIMET seriously.

The minister said even when the heavy rains would ensure food security in the country; Nigerians living in the coastal areas should make adequate preparations against flooding.

Mrs Njeze also said the seasonal rainfall prediction provides early warning information on the impending rainy season and will no doubt assist stakeholders in aviation, agriculture, environment, disaster risk management, health, water resources and dam operations to plan their activities for the forthcoming season in a way that will maximize the benefits of the rain.

She said the predictions are targeted at among other benefits, providing the farmer with the opportunity of improving his performance in agricultural production and food security, adding, "Government is taking seriously, the challenges of extreme weather and climate events, and the associated negative impacts on economic development," she said.

Make una sorry o

But people in the Buildings controls dept should be sacked or perhaps the policy should be reviewed, no point pulling down buildings and acting as if the permits didn't come from the state department

And Lawma also, there's no point trying to pass it ALL as nature some parts could have been well managed, even if its only one district that is saved

They should employer more lawma agents to enforce and penalise businesses

A comprehensive drainage system will be about the size of the national budget!

Final word on this. Not all parts of Lagos are habitable. The island is fast falling under this category. The hardworking people who live and work on the island will have to work harder to keep the ocean out. Long term I seriously doubt the viability of that finger of land. The west coast of Africa may be shielded from the consequences of tectonic movement but global warming dictates sea level rises by precipitation, convection and melting ice.

So NIMET is correct, the situation will get worse. Heavier rainfall, longer wet season, slower rate of runoff and percolation. So the government should start building the next generation drainage systems. Gutters and canals just won't do when the sea is higher. As we speak the Atlantic is above the door level of buildings on Ahmadu Bello built in the seventies and early eighties.

To make matters worse instead of walling the water out like in New Orleans or Amsterdam where they have sealed tubed pressured systems and locks they are instead encouraging the extension of the coastline in many parts and only a fool will fail to realise the gradient of the gutters have all but flattened. Just imagine the distance residents of dolphin have to cope with to get their rain to the lagoon with that stupid sandfilling. Government no see am or residents of Dolphin and its environs are not tax payers.

For developers, landlords and tenants perhaps its time to begin to categorise housing like is done in Russia or other frozen lands - summer and winter housing. We can have dry and wet season housing so for those who cannot swim they pay only six month rent per year and move out in April.

hmm, sounds funny but some people do spend their winters in florida and the other seasons elsewhere.
