His statement followed the playing of a video tape showing some Yoruba leaders- Late Abraham Adesanya, late Bola Ige and Ayo Opadokun addressing the media men after a meeting with Gen. Abubakar who was Head of State. The video did not, however, show the Yoruba leaders collecting bribe as alleged by al-Mustapha on Tuesaday.
Major Al-Mustapha who is facing trial for alleged murder of Chief Abiola’s wife, Kudirat, had told the court in his evidence-in-chief last Monday that former head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar withdrew huge sums of money from the Central Bank of Nigeria to ‘settle’ Yoruba leaders in order to douse the tension that gripped the South West following the death of Chief Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election on June 7, 1998. He had boasted that he had some video tapes to back his claim that South West leaders were compromised.

So after all the noise, Mustapha's video failed to show what he promised it would show. Now I know some people (you know yourselves) would say the video had been edited. If the video was edited, Mustapha was in court and would have raised an alarm, so we can conclude that the video wasn't tampered with. Mustapha is on trial for the murder of Kudirat Abiola but he has hasn't help his case with any revelation concerning this murder. He has diverted attention away from the murder trial and the nation fell for it.
The suspicious aspect is that Mustapha is no longer talking about the "bribe" video. He has now jumped on Nuhu Ribadu and how Nuhu wanted him killed. From Nuhu, he jumped to another story about how Abdulsalami pushed for the execution of Obasanjo. What else is this drowning man going to talk about before answering his murder charge? Isn't someone accused of murder supposed to be trying hard to vindicate himself and stop beating about the bush? Obviously this whole thing is a circus to him and he wants his name to stay in Nigerians' memories before he meets his inevitable fate.
Now is it possible that some Yoruba elders took bribe? Yes. But one thing that's certain is that Bola Ige isn't one of them. See Mustapha's letter to Bola Ige below.
Re: Al-mustapha’s Video Fails To Indict Ige, Adesanya, Others by lagcity(m): 3:07am On Aug 05, 2011
Al-Mustapha also tendered a letter allegedly written by him to the Late Bola Ige telling him how he was used to douse tension generated by the death of the late MKO Abiola.
The letter which was read in open court, stated that after Abiola was confirmed dead, Ige was counseled to bring all other South-West leaders under the guise of dousing tension.“All these actions were deliberate. You were only used unconsciously to ensure that Abiola’s death was covered up. They succeeded in stopping all Yoruba leaders and Abiola’s family from suing by paying them off with huge sums of money withdrawn from the Central Bank,” he said in the letter.
Al-Mustapha had also alleged in the letter that the Chief Ige appointment as Attorney General of the Federation was aimed at rewarding him for the unconscious role he played in Abiola’s murder.
“Unknown to you sir, you were made to deny people their rights even though they knew that you were one of the leading figures in human rights struggle in Nigeria, The same blood money given to the Yoruba leaders the day after Abiola was murdered was also used in paying the media,” the letter read.

Take note that Mustapha never accused Ige of taking any bribe. He only told Ige that he (ige) had been used because of his credibility and his ability to bring together Yoruba elders. This makes sense now because after Mustapha told Ige of the bribe and how he had been used, Ige now knows the secret and most likely those who took bribe. And we all know how Ige ended up.

Yoruba leaders in Aso Rock
The video tape which was played in court yesterday, however, showed some Yoruba leaders leaving the meeting with General Abdusalam Abubakar at Aso Rock Villa. The video footage which he claimed was shot by his personal bodyguard revealed the faces of late Afenifere leader, Chief Abraham Adesanya; former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige and the former secretary of the National Democratic Coalition, Chief Ayo Opadokun leaving the meeting with the head of state, a day after Abiola’s death but did not contain the explosive revelation promised.
From the video shown, Adesanya told journalists that the discussion with Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar centred on the setting up of a Sovereign National Conference to prepare the constitution by which Nigeria will be ruled. “The Head of State listened to our concerns and we concluded that the Government of National Unity will continue to be in place despite the death of Abiola.”, Adesanya told newsmen
Asked by journalists how Abiola’s death affected the outcome of the meeting,
Adesanya’s response in the video was that he did not know.

Al Mustapha might have some secrets. He is playing a very high risk "bargaining" game, it will end in a memorable, but unpredictable way.

It is certain from the way he is behaving that anything he has to release would implicate him as well. Thats my reading.
Since he has little to lose, he is now playing a game of dare. So, he drops the names of a couple of dead guys and a General who is in poor health, he mentions he gave an increminating tape (which he possibly has copies of) to Obj. Then he namedrops Ribadu who is in Afghanistan. The only really serious name thats present in the country is Mike Okiro.
Al Mustapha might have enough to blackmail several people with in the hope that they will "negotiate" and pull strings, but because of the high stakes, he is likely to have to risk all (both his freedom and his life).

Might have doesn't cut it. You are hanging by threads to the words of a murderer who strode the landscape carrying out the intentions of his benefactor Abacha.

He didn't have to hide any potential tapes because he already promised it - only the delivered tape wasn't what he promised. He doesn't have jack, and is only trying to hoodwink people by muddling the waters. How does it help his case before the courts to claim to have tapes on the Abiola & Abacha murders, and the case of bribery against these Yoruba leaders, and then present a feeble publicly recorded video? He said some people were paid money, but his evidence was a request to the CBN for estacodes by the FG.

BTW, the last I heard was that Ribadu left Afghanistan after the hotel where foreigners usually stay was massively bombed. Ribadu has already described his allegation as a joke.

May his days in detention never end for attempting to sully the name of great people who stood firm even when they were confronted by his & his masters evil machinery. Didn't Bola Ige openly tell Abacha about his political parties being five fingers of a leprous hand?

It is not smart to jump into conclusion as Al-Mustapha is still standing trial. If you quickly dismiss his claims against Ige and Adesanya et al. do you know if he has more evidences in his archive?? Al Mustapha to me is like a pregnant woman. No one knows what he will deliver next. You guys don't even know what is coming up next on Monday.

How about deliberating on the opinion below:

"If according to you guys, Al Mustapha’s video failed to indict Ige, Adesanya and others, how come all of those who went to Aso Rock failed to attend Chief Abiola’s funeral? Prominently absent were Ige and Adesanya. They accepted money bags from the man who ordered the murder of Chief Abiola and according to Yoruba superstition, the ghost of the departed could have dealt with them if they showed up at his funeral"

It is simply immature to jump into conclusions poor Yoruba Naira landers.

let's not conclude yet, the man has a lot to spill, from the spillage, we can gather a lot from it when the time come, it will expose more people and events. but come to think of it, if all those that were charged along with him for the murder of Kudirat have been released, included the said killer, why has he (Al-Mustapha) who is an accomplice to the murder, still be held in prison. I smell dead rats

Major Hamzat al-Mustapha, the former Chief Security Officer to late Gen. Sani Abacha, yesterday at the Lagos High Court, Igbosere, continued his testimony with a revelation of how Chief Bola Ige, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, was used to scuttle the validation of the June 12, 1993 presidential election presumed to have been won by the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola. Al-Mustapha who is standing trial for the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, also tendered a VHS video cassette of the late Chief Abraham Adesanya, Ige and other Yoruba leaders’ visit to Aso Rock. A letter by Major Hamza al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, was read at a Lagos High Court, Igbosere, yesterday. He is standing trial for the murder of Kudirat, wife of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Al-Mustapha promised to bring the letter to court yesterday indicating how the late Attorney-General of the Federation/Justice Minister, Bola Ige (SAN) was used against the validation of the election. Led in evidence by his counsel, Olalekan Ojo, al-Mustapha read to the court, contents of the letter in which he drew the attention of the late Chief Ige to the fact that he had been unconsciously used against the late Abiola. The court admitted the letter as exhibit. “You will recall that you were unconsciously used to arrange and convey Chief Abiola’s family to come and see him purportedly in preparation for his release on the eve of his murder. “You and other Yoruba leaders were unconsciously used to suppress the agitation of the people with inducement. You will recall that General Abdulsalami was honoured because of the way he was able to manage the reaction of the people over Abiola’s death. Even your present appointment was in furtherance of the same agenda.” “I wrote the letter during the Oputa Panel sitting in Abuja in July 2001 and I sent it through my counsel, the late Chief Celement Akpamgbo (SAN) Amobi Nzelu and Bala Ibn Na’Alla who led me at the Oputa panel, they were also aware of the letter. “Athough Chief Akpamgbo is no more, Amobi Nzelu and Bala Na’ Alla are alive.” The letter was also admitted as exhibit by the Court. In the letter, part of which was read, al-Mustapha wrote Chief Ige; “ you were only used for the purpose of the eliminating Chief Abiola, the 14th Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland for selfish political agenda,” he said. Again, he revealed that but for sheer providence intervention, former President Olusegun Obasanjo would have been executed for the phantom coup of 1995 if the then military regime had acceded to the position of General Abubakar Abdulsalami. al-Mustapha told the court that following the death sentence passed on Obasanjo and those implicated in the coup, some officers including himself and the former military administrator of Lagos State, Col. Buba Marwa (rtd) said that the sentence should be commuted. According to him, at the meeting of the Provisional Ruling Council (PRC) where the final fate of the convicts were to be decided, General Abdulsalami insisted that the full weight of the 1976 decree on coup, enacted by Obasanjo should be applied. “At that meeting, General Abdulsalam said General Obasanjo should be made to face the 1976 decree he enacted for coup plotter. He said Obasanjo is one of the most irresponsible human beings. He said other unprintable things about him. “I recorded the meeting on video where the General said all these, even though it is illegal. I kept the tape until 1998 when General Sabo who was detained with me for plotting to overthrow Abdulsalami was released. When he was leaving detention, I whispered to him to go and get the tape where I kept it and ensured that it gets to Obasanjo to warn him about certain people pretending to be his friends,” he said. Earlier, as promised on Wednesday, an audio visual tape on the visit of chieftains of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) led by the late Ige was showed to the court. The footage of the video clips showed Afenifere leader, the late Chief Abraham Adesanya responding to State House reporters who interacted with him shortly after their meeting with Abdulsalami. Responding; Adesanya denied reaching any consensus with the government, saying: No agreement had been reached with the Head of State, other than that he will consider the proposal before him. “Our demand of Government of National Unity (GNU) still stands. We are also demanding that, Sovereign National Conference (SNC) should be convened to fashion out a new constitution for the country,” However, Chief Adesanya was non-conmittant on the death of Chief Abiola in custody. According to al-Mustapha, the meeting with Pa Adesanya and his team was hosted by General Abdulsalami and the then National Security Adviser (NSA), General Abdulsalam Mohammed, who he said allegedly raised the memo of July 8, 1998 requesting for the withdrawal of money from the treasury of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), sums of $ 200 million USD, 75 million pounds and N500 million naira. The video tape which said was the record of the depature of the leaders revealed where they were ushered into their vehicles. He explained that the video tape which contained the arrival of the leaders was among the tapes taken away from his residence when he was arrested in 1998. On his relationship with General Abdulsalami, al-Mustapha said that at the critical stage when General Abacha died, there were a lot of interests trying to succeed him. “At that time, he was not the best man, but God used me to help him to ascend the throne. “For four days, General Abdulsalami and I had meetings at Aguda House where we discussed serious national issues and I was involved in handing over of everything to him. Even the dust in General Abacha’s room, I gathered it in a nylon bag and handed it over to him along. “During our meeting, I demanded for the safety of Chief Abiola and the immediate family of General Abacha. Those were my personal requests out of the 16-point agenda we agreed upon,” he said. He noted that even while in Kirikiri prison, a Federal Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs. Stella Onitiri, was sent to him to recruit him as a witness against the Abiola family in the suit against the Federal Government in which the family is demanding for damages over the death of their bread winner in custody. He also alleged that the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, tortured him and other accused persons by constantly giving instructions to the driver that conveyed them to the court to drive roughly . According to him, he narrowly escaped being killed by those who brought them to Lagos, led by Ribadu because of a disagreement between them and the then Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Mike Okiro. He told the court that in July, 2001, he wrote a 11-page letter to the late Chief Ige in which he alerted him that he had been unconsciously used in the murder of Chief Abiola. On a final note, al- Mustapha denied any complicity in the murder of Kudirat Abiola, insisting that he had been kept in detention because his enemies, particularly viewed him as the late Abacha’s ghost, which should be done away with at all cost. “Those who wanted Abiola dead see me as the enemy. Those who wanted to succeed Abacha but felt that I played a role in their not getting there see me as enemy, that was why they initiated this charge against me. The remote control is in Abuja but they are not telling the Lagos the truth about the matter. “It is totally untrue that I sent anybody to go and kill Kudirat Abiola. I was earmarked for punishment. They cannot afford to have me outside. If I had conspired, they should have brought the evidence either from the SSS or military intelligence. “I did not give any officer any UZ gun or ammunition for any assignment. I did not know anything about the burning of General Alani Akinrinade’s residence and the Rutam House,” The Guardian office,” he said. Hearing continues on Monday, August 8.

I have always said that there is no link between who d killer of MKO/Abacha is/was and the trial of Al-Mustapha for d death of Kudirat and the attempt on Ibru. As stated in d topic: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-727537.0.html he is playing on our collective intelligence by deliberately delaying his own trial in order to stay too long in detention without conviction. His long stay will attract condemnations from human rights groups (local and international), the govt will be under pressure to either jail or release him. he may just walk out.

what if he was commanded with threats to his life by a very senior General to kill kudirat, possibly Abacha, would mustapha's bear the full brunt of the law? And if the agents of this same general forbid him to name them with threats to his family's life, can mustapha confess in court? That is the irony of the situation, I believe
