SSANU and NASU officials met with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, in Abuja on August 20, 2022.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) on Saturday suspended their strike actions after a brief meeting with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu in Abuja.

The suspension is expected to take effect from Wednesday.

According to the education minister, the Federal Government has committed N50 billion to pay earned allowances for members of SSANU, NASU and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

However, activities in public universities are expected to remain limited as ASUU remains on strike.

Minister Adamu, who had hinted of SSANU and NASU’s strike suspension on Thursday, said ASUU rejected the government’s proposal over the “no work, no pay” rule.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, ASUU’s President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, said salary backlogs must be cleared before lecturers return to the classroom.

“If we agree on that, therefore, the lectures we should have given [to students] for 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 [sessions], should be allowed to go so we start a new session, 2022/2023, in September,” Professor Osodeke said.

“Therefore, by July next year, I would go on my leave as we used to have in those days so that the backlog is gone. All the lectures that remain; all the two sets of admissions that JAMB has given that are waiting should become irrelevant.”

He explained that when “other unions go on strike and come back, all those periods for which you are on strike, you don’t need to do the backlog of work.

“But for ASUU, when we go back today, we are going to start from the 2020/2021 session. For these two sets of students that have been admitted by JAMB, we have to teach them over these periods to ensure that we meet up with the system.

“So, we are going to do the backlog of the work we have left behind. We are not going to start today and say ‘This session is 2022/2023, therefore, all these two sets of people that have been admitted by JAMB are cancelled. We have to take another admission for the 2023/2024 session’.”

The ASUU chief also said the union does not need a pity party over the government’s withholding of the lecturers’ wages, maintaining that the union “can take care” of its members.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14.

Sinkhole NASU and SSANU have called off!

Accept what FG offers and negotiate with a new government by next year, besides whatever you agree with this FG, likely next Govenment will renege on it or refuse to bow to it with excuse it was not their government or times have changed and crude oil has sunken in price. So what’s the point insisting on getting most of everything with this outgoing government ?

Three years of admission years are piling up in universities!

ASUU shouldn’t let this strike ENTER September.

Thank God that good sense and patriotism has started setting in.

FG took ASUU and all of them to the court of public opinion and Nigerians got bewildered on realising the cost implication of the 2009 agreement is N1.1 trillion shocked
Where will FG get N1.1 trillion from that national budget? FG should stop creating new universities abeg.

FG , ASUU, NASU, SSANU and all the stakeholders must meet and agree on realistic way forward.
May God bless Nigeria for ever!

Promised made by Jonathan government now honoured by Buhari govt.

By the way, I think ASUU should continue with their strike since they are waiting for PDP to win before they can resume.

Nonsensical stupid strike

This is what they've ever wanted, all about selfish interests and greed, increase in allowances and salaries. They have no sympathy for the students or cared about the standards of school infrastructures. It would be unjust if FG paid them for 6 months strike of unproductivity.

It's appalling and disappointing to note that JAC, SSANU and NASU, are suspending their strike based on mere promises from FG.

I can assure them that non of the promises in their new agreement will be honoured by the FG.

I give them only 2 months to return back to the strike.

Re: SSANU, NASU Suspend Strike After Meeting With Education Minister by Nobody: 3:19pm On Aug 20, 2022
The only way to solve this strike issue is for government to allow universities to be autonomous and to set fees as high as they want to.

That way they can make enough money to pay lecturers what they want and to pay for any new facilities, and equipment and suchlike.

Also, at the end of the day, we need more money in things like tetfund

Government always play politics with institutions.
Okay from ASUU to SSANU.
Now in order to break ASUU power, they (Federal government) romanced with SSANU and NASU.
History will not forgive This APC government.
