Response to Sahara Reporters Story: WikiLeaks: Okonjo-Iweala Ferried $50 Million Jobs To Brother

Yesterday, Sahara Reporters put up a story on Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Find it here. The minister has seen it and denies the story. She says it's a smear campaign and her office has released a response to the story.

This reference to Dr Okonjo-Iweala in this story lacks substance and credibility. It is based on two sentences in the Wikileaks cable uttered by an unidentified person alleging that Dr Okonjo-Iweala “steered” contracts worth $50m contract to her brother for “consulting work” in 2004.

First, the minister has no brother called Jon-Jon, as the alleged “brother” is identified in the story.
Second, no brother of the minister was awarded any such “consulting” contract for as alleged.

Third, as Minister of Finance in the Obasanjo government, Dr Okonjo-Iweala earned a name as a public servant of impeccable integrity who kept away from contracts and had no interest in dealing with contractors.

Fourth, this “revelation” obviously refers to a previous allegation about one of her brothers which was thoroughly investigated and discredited because it was found to have originated from vested interests. It is shocking that something that was discredited so long ago is being rehashed.

It would therefore be extremely unwise to give credence to such a flippant statement by an unknown and unconfirmed source. The story is simply a “tales by moonlight” account by an unknown source about something that never happened.

It is also important to note that one of the many reasons Dr Okonjo-Iweala enjoys such a high standing internationally is the fact that she has been thoroughly investigated and cleared by the most respected security agencies in the world.

With Okonjo-Iweala what you see is what you get. Anything else is fiction.

Paul C Nwabuikwu
Senior Special Assistant to Coordinating Minister for the Economy/Minister of Finance

I think we need more details. Who is this man known as JonJon? What are the details of this consultancy contract?

SaharaReports is the most unreliable source of news in the world and I think they lost their credibility due to undue desire to hit headlines. I will rather believe a story from encomium or Nairaland than Saharareports.

This revelation DID NOT come from S.R but from Wikileaks, as we are informed in both the S.R article, and other media reports on this.

Attacking S.R for making the existence of this leak known is ridiculous!

Saharareports has a reputation of creating falsehood. Last month, it was Dora who built multimillion dollar mansion on NafDac piece of land. They failed to investigate on how Igbo people allocate lands for homes in their culture before they fabricated the story. SR has aired over 2000 false stories till date. So whats ridiculous about calling their credibility to question?

Coming from WikiLeaks does not make it credible either. If you seek the truth, why not ask why Ambassador Campbell who created these gossips did not mention Atiku[his bosom] friend at all?. Obasanjo has repeatedly denied involvement with Suntrust but Campbell continues to tie him to it. He was obviously speaking for Atiku.
Since you are obsessed with asking for who. Did you ask for who was awarded the contract in the first place whether he/she is related to Ngozi or not?.  $50M contract awarded by Ngozi Iweala and Obasanjo had no clue?

Nna na wa ooO!!! See how people don dey already jump to accuse S.R as if it manufactured the story, even after being informed of where the story came from. What peaks my interest in this is Nigerians were unaware of all that went down, until this leak. But now to distract from the message, we now have another meaningless "MY SOURCE IS BETTER THAN YOURS" idiocy, rather than ensuring we get the truth even in this.

This response was very unnecessary. Any government official can oil farida's pocket and investigations will suddenly become unfounded. I believe Wikileaks because the American government has spies in every sector of every country. They have files on every country and their source of power is information. Not weapons or technology. America, China, and Russia are the biggest spy countries in the world, and guess what? They are power brokers. Information is key, you can build and destroy. Wikileaks was classified information and was never to be made public. Nigerian government are so concerned about stealing that they neglect national security. Foreign governments having this kind of information on politicians in a country is very deadly. The foreign governments use this knowledge to blackmail corrupt politicians into doing their bidding's. Imagine Shell's power on these corrupt politicians based on what they know. She has been exposed, she should just keep it moving and not try to justify. As for "Jon-Jon", how is any Nigerian not from her immediate family or immediate working environment supposed to know her brother's pet name? .

Most of the Celebrated Wikileak accusations are assumptions and hearsay and would be taken with a pinch of salt by anyone with functional head. Imagine tagging someone as corrupt based on unsubtantiated accusation from someone like Uzor Kalu!
What we have are just the thoughts of individuals being accepted as hard facts by a cynical mob and it doesnt surprise me one bit judging by the cult following SR enjoys from cynics.

Wikileaks has nothing to do with United States abeg. The so called ambassador vomited what he "heard" from city gossip but cleverly refused to vomit something about Atiku because Atiku is so clean that Jesus called him a man after His own heart. All the information contained in wikileaks is to be taken with a pinch of salt because it is more like the anthology of government gossip .

hahahahha, that bolded comment just means i dont need to respond to this. You dont even know what you are saying. Gossip? Spies are not gossip. America documents everything, if you dont know you better know that now. If Okonjo was in world bank and she got in their way, they would have used this information all the same.

See vague  idiotic denial.

Who are these clowns fooling.

1. Who investigated her and what best security agency in the world investigated her?

2. What is her brother's real name

3. She was in charge of the debt buy back deal and it's safe to conclude that she has ample knowledge about who she awarded the contract to. Naming who she awarded the contact to in this dumb denial should have occupied the first paragraph.

4 why is it so hard for them to just tell nigerians who she gave the contact to and till she fess up, this story is getting buried. she is is either corrupt and deceptive or just plain dumb and gutless.

This is a wikileaks revelation that has nothing to do with sahara reporters, but I'm glad that the usual worthless swamp rat and his moronic friends are out to entertain us with their idiocy and mental deficiencies.

These clowns really know how to insult and take us for granted. Nigerians have concerns about her dealings and instead of stepping out to explain to Nigeria's her part and set the record straight, she sent some paper pusher to insult us with some half baked story. This is really pathetic.
Re: Okonju Iweala Responds To Wikileaks Scandal by cap28: 12:50am On Sep 11, 2011
nigeria is a haven for criminals because 90% of its people are ignorant, semi- literate and docile, a senior govt official is involved in a $50 million scandal and instead of being up in arms about this, delusional i.diots start making excuses for these scumbags, in the UK MP's go to jail for fiddling their expenses for £10,000 - in nigeria where the average person does not have access to jobs, decent accommodation, electricity and food shameless leaders loot the nigerian treasury with impunity and the semi literate nigerian populace runs to defend them.

It must be heaven being a nigerian looter leader - you can loot to your heart's content because no punishment awaits you at the end of it - there is absolutely no hope for nigeria as long as these criminals are allowed to continue on their looting jamboree.
Re: Okonju Iweala Responds To Wikileaks Scandal by cap28: 1:02am On Sep 11, 2011
what these dumb nigerian looter leaders dont understand is that the american and british intelligence services have had them under surveillance for years, every conversation that nigerian politicians have is documented , every dodgy deal is recorded, nigeria is crawling with CIA, MI6 and Mossad people, this kind of information comes in handy when the respective govts of those services wish to blackmail the nigerian govt. I suspect that this information is coming out now because of nigeria's dealings with china, this is america's way of threatening these fools, if nigeria continues to move forward with these their chinese deals they can expect a "humanitarian intervention" from NATO just like the one that is happening in libya.

Was this not how the Dr. Okonjo was supposed to have had a cut from the debt deal, yet this is from Wikileaks ? Meanwhile, when Dr. Iweala negotiated this deal from Paris club, they claimed her brother owned Paris club. What nonsense. Every effort to tarnish her image. This was a cable between U.S. Embassy and Dept of State, what are the odds that the news that Ambassador Sanders classified was actually true?
