I am currently in Onitsha and i drive past the seaport every morning and evening enroute our warehouse in main market. The port is not yet ready to receive goods but the contractors work day and night. If and when completed, it will de-congest Lagos by force.
Enugu airport is another project i am eagerly waiting to see its completion.
As soon as those two become operational, Going to Lagos for me will surely be like going to Ghana.

@ Poster: Are you having a laugh or what? There are many fallacies in your assertions on this thread. To start with- a)No 'Ship' has berthed at the new Onitsha port (Don't you think such a momentous occassion would have been immortalised in film/photos? Yet you have non to show). b)The port is not yet completed. c)Those cranes are nothing like the ones on ground presently at Onitsha. d)So there is no diference between Sea and River ports in your books abi?

Does anybody have a pic or illustration of the kind of vessels that will be berthing at Onitsha? Just curious, as i know vessels will have to pass under the Niger Bridge b/4 accessing the Port.

Its obvious the poster is just trying to promote his website, I think its completion date has been changed from October 2011 to november 2011; I hope its successful because it will be a great way for the SE to take Nigeria to new heights.

@tpia, You maybe right except that Lagos will lose a lot.
Personally i dread driving 7 to 8 hours to Lagos only to board an aircraft. Isnt that stupidity in the part of our Nation ? How about driving down a container all the way from Lagos to Onitsha. That takes over 15 hours. wow!, Lagos state will lose financially but then we dont have to pity Lagos state while we suffer.

sometimes one wonders at the way Nigerian leaders think, at a time they operated only 1 gateway into Nigeria that is the MMA and later 2 gateways NAA and MMA , eastern tourist , travellers and pilgrims will drive all the way from the East to Abuja and lagos to board a flight to major destinations the same went for the sea ports, one wonders at the selfish wisdom of operating 1 deep sea port for more than 51 years of the nations existence , calabar port is not a deep sea port and the port harcourt sea port was never really developed into a deep sea port and a RORO port just to suit the narrow interests of a few selfish lots.

All this reminds me of how the north rather than develop it self , expended all its energies marginalising the east whom the believed they defeated in a war , 40 years after the north is in a deep mess in every sphere of human development and the people they held down have surpassed them .

I laughed for a second at #1 but hey I will not mock you; you said, No body is building a seaport in Onitsha,It is a Cargo port.

Dude, a cargo port is a classification of a Seaport; just like they have cruise ports (cruise only), fishing ports, et al. Cargo ships (General cargo, Dry-Bulk, Multipurpose and Tankers) berth at a port primarily designed for its purpose (Cargo). Cargo ports have all the necessary tools, equipments and resources to handle from a small vessel to large ocean liners. Depending on the size and how how it's classified (domestic or international), that will largely depend on its operation and services. For instance, if Onitsha port is primarily designed for general cargo (containers only), then it might not have the equipments to handle tankers (oil - crude or refined, diesel, chemicals, )etc.

You're right. In express terms,a ferry cannot be described as a Cargo ship, even though it is capable of ferrying cargo.

Also, the waterways of Onitsha are inland around the divisions of the delta,so the ports there are NOT seaports. cool

dont be silly, one of the busiest waterway in the world is the strait of malacca and it is only 2.8 km at its farthest points, while the river niger , tho the bridge is about 1.5 km, the farthest points are at 4.8 km apart- not at the bridge head, but at points farther away.

the onitsha seaport u see now is only a starting point. Soludo's office is planning an integrated master plan for a comprehensive integrated seaport complex to accommodation the BIGGEST, LARGEST MARKET IN BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH OF THE AFRICA, AND SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR .

something big is coming to onitsha and asaba for real.

Are you offering us the new definition for SEA? Why is it always so hard for you people to be honest with yourselves, you no there is no damn sea in that are so why keep making the sea references?

The place can not function as a seaport simply because it's a river, it's too shallow and dredging only cleared a narrow path for small boats to sail trough.

Brov, Onitsha port is not a SEAPORT,

Onitsha does not have any seashore, that waterway is a dredged  River Niger.

Is River Niger a sea?

Really? Are u line with reality at all?

Most of the goods that comes through lagos that the igbos use to move by road between lagos, mid west and the south east by road will now go down to onitsha by ship and you are still saying it is not going to shake up lagos economic systems.

The opening of the port in Onitsha will enable more goods to come in to the country, it is not going to affect the Lagos economy, the ports are federal properties anyway and importers will not ship goods meant for the SW to Onitsha just because of some tribal patriotism. There are so many ports in the South South that should have been receiving goods for the SE, why has this not happened?

When they say they have to clear the ships at Lagos, what does that really mean?

Onitsha port  is like a local airport, you do not expect International Flight to land in any Local Airport.

Every cargo going to Onitsha port will be cleared in the major seaports in SW/SS, before going inland to Onitsha .

It's always about cost and you are yet to educate us about the cost breakdown associated with transporting good via this river and road transportation from Lagos.

The goods are not sailing from their foreign destinations via ocean liners straight to your river port, there's still a destination in between before the goods gets to the final destination and this means goods transfer, unpacking and repacking, loading and reloading, extra logistics, this is extra time and extra money.

It doesn't matter how their good get to their desired locations, business folks are into making money, not losing losing money.
