Ghana’s ruling government has concluded plans to begin export of electric power to Nigeria and other West African countries by 2015.
The country’s Vice President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, who unfolded the plan in Accra, on Tuesday, said the government has already embarked on extensive expansion of power infrastructure to enable them achieve the project.

Mahama explained that a key motivation for the investment was that Ghana presently has competitive advantage in the area of power supply over other neighbouring countries, including Nigeria, which is still grappling with massive power deficit for its estimated 150 million citizens.

The vice president, who spoke at a summit on Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Compact Two in Accra, said the country intends to consolidate on its existing energy infrastructures by exploring alternative sources of supply, including solar power and biomass resources, to ensure that the target of selling power to other West African countries was achieved by the next four years.

Mahama, who underscored the imperative of stable energy in the economic development of his country said Ghana was partnering the United States Government to realize the dream, stressing that raising the nation`s power generation would in addition create wealth and alleviate poverty among her citizens. It was in the light of that initiative that the Millennium Challenge Account Compact two was organized to seek ways of funding power generation and transmission and uninterrupted power supply.

Under the arrangement, the country intends to increase her current 2000 megawatts of electricity to 5000 megawatts with the hope of selling surpluses to needy countries including Nigeria. Also speaking, Ghana’s deputy minister of Energy, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini explained that the country would require about $1.7billion to meet its quest for universal access to power supply, pointing out the President Arthur Mills government had already received about $966.55million from bilateral and multilateral institutions in that regard.
Alhaji Fuseini said there was a` shortfall of about $729million against which background it considered MCA compact two was considered useful.

IT would be recalled that Ghana has one of the largest dams in the world had in 2009 celebrated her ten years of uninterrupted power supply. Authoritative sources say that the Akosombo Dam built by late President Kwame Nkrumah has the potential to supply the entire West Africa with electricity if fully utilized.

It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan had shortly after being sworn-in in May reviewed the nation’s power roadmap, raising fears that Nigeria may continue to live with power shortages in the foreseeable future.

Daft - how can you export electricity?

How much does Nigeria need, how much does Ghana need? only 4000, and they want to "export" part of it.

Maybe Ghana is part of the new companies given license to generate electricity?

I keep saying it, illiteracy is the worst killer. No matter how rich your country is in terms of minerals and agricultural products; when it is run by a group of illiterates, you will NEVER progress.
The British hegemonists were so keen on maintaining their control over Nigeria, they denied the North adequate education, inflated their population figures and then rigged them into government. You think it was a coincidence? You think it was a mistake?
51 years later and 38 years of reckless misrule and we STILL haven't gone anywhere.
That fallen 1080 power plant, according to the workers themselves, had been running in the same condition for 40 years. I guess innovation and reinvention are not our favorite words.
Ghana's had her own fair share of corrupt leaders in the past; but what makes her different is her people's determination to eliminate them. As for Nigeria? We just roll over and take it all lying on our backs.
I'm so filled with hate and disgust right now.
Crap!

to generate about 3000MW extra while OBJ spent over $16 billion to generate almost nothing. There is actually nothing wrong in buying electricity. Norway exports to the Netherlands. The basic thing is to have sufficient power supply to service the needs of the people.

Most people dont read before making comments- this is 2011, they will begin the export in 2015. Four years interval, and what will the new companies licensed to generate electricity in Nigeria be doing in four years? Nothing, abi? Dey will fold their arms and let Ghana reap all their profit? Come on people. Ghana is praising herself for nothing.

The title is very wrong as usual. The OP writes as if Nigeria has concluded plans to buy electricity from Ghana whereas in actual fact, its the VP that is making a mere political statement.

Ghana does not have the capacity now, and there is no guarantee they will have it by 2015 let alone sell same to Nigeria.

By the way since states government can now generate their own electricity the complexity on ground will change. Ghana Vice president is making a re-election campaign speech.

Why not? No need to get sentimental - if it indeed is cheaper to import electricity from Ghana, then we should do it.

I don't care where the electricity comes from as long as it is available and affordable.

Besides, this is pure speculation - Ghana doesn't have the generation capacity now, no guarantee of getting that capacity by 2015 not to mention building the transmission infrastructure to get the power to Nigeria.

Lets see if it actually happens. They made the same headline a few years ago, Nigeria has not bought any from them to date.

Also we seem to be forgetting that generation is not the main problem with Nigerian electricity. Is Ghana going  to bring the investment in that infrastructure? Are the cartels going to lay down and watch that happen?

Its unlikely we will buy any electricity from Ghana, sorry.

And YES, there IS shame in buying electricity from ghana, Niger ,Togo or anywhere else while we are an oil and gas producing nation. YES there IS SHAME in that and we should not let that happen.

Do you think Ghanaians will not be ashamed if they have to start to import cocoa and gold from other countries to Ghana?

@Synthesis, what is even more worth noting is that more recently, electricity in Ghana has NOT been uninterrupted. They can not give us what they don't have.

What are all those companies granted refinery licence in Nigeria doing for the past 12 years? Are they not into Subsidy scam instead of building the refinery.
Reality on ground in Ghana is that they have surmounted their elecricity energy problem, if they projected to have  surplus by 2015 and sell, why not.

@topic, why are people excited that Ghanaians are saying they are putting themselves in a position to sell, did Nigeria or any other African nation mention anywhere that they are preparing to buy?

The claims that Ghanaian politicians make to their electorate does not equate to concrete plans that Nigeria has.

@Ismhab, truth be told  Atta Mills can not even be compared with Fashola in terms of achievements under his administration and Fashola has a  comparable population under his care, even as a state governor.

Before we go making wild and irrational claims in the usual tantrums, let us actually think about what we are saying.
Re: Nigeria To Buy Electricity From Ghana - Can You Believe It? by 1forall: 12:17pm On Dec 16, 2011
At the rate things are going now, in 2015 the power situation will either be the same or worse, or at best slightly improved from what it is. We'll still be shouting 'no light'.

There is no political will to provide power for all because too many powerful individuals and institutions benefit from our national darkness,
Even if imported from Ghana or Togo, it is still subject to Nigerian sabotage once it hits the PHCN system.

No be small problem.
