I feel the need to correct one general misinformation here, The UK is an Oil Producing Country.

The problem is not with the Subsidy Removal but the fact that the substance of the benefits of the oil subsidy are very debatable especially in the light of our known history and present.

Nigeria with its large population and small oil base is comparatively poor compared 2 other oil producers therefore We must rethink the approach to managing our scarce resources to provide better services to 9ja people. We are not alone in this, most world nations are passing through Austerity periods right now.

As the subsidy removal is pressed on, Sanusi should also press harder on cashless economy implementation. Technology is the only instrument that can kick corruption out of Nigeria

The report below is a protest in the UK on increase in transportation by 6%. This is to show our educated but illiterate brothers both in Diaspora and at home who are insinuating that because UK system works that they swallow all of their govt policy. If a whole UK is angry over a 6% increase in transportation, which by the way Nigerians would die for, how can a confused person come hear to say Nigerians are moaning over Fuel price hike.

Rail passengers threaten fare protests

Angry commuters are threatening to jam the Treasury switchboard in protest at soaring fare rises.

By David Millward and Christopher Hope

7:00AM GMT 02 Jan 2012

A day of action has been planned by the Campaign for Better Transport, as it moves to step up pressure on the Government over above inflation increases which come into force this week.

The environmental lobby group is turning to social media and urging supporters to use Twitter to deluge George Osborne with tweets.

Some passengers will see their fares rise by almost ten per cent as a result of the Government’s decision to allow season tickets to increase by an average of six per cent.

Their plight could have been far worse but for Justine Greening, the new Transport Secretary, winning concessions from the Treasury shortly after taking office.

Fares such as season tickets, which are controlled by the Government, were due to increase by three per cent above the Retail Price Index - or eight per cent - this week. However Ms Greening persuaded the Chancellor to hold the rise down to one per cent above RPI.

But under current Government spending plans, fares will rise by three per cent above inflation in both 2013 and 2014.

Last week the Campaign produced research which showed that commuters in Britain were paying up to 10 times as much to get to work than some of their continental counterparts.

"We already have the most expensive fares in Europe,” said Sophie Allan from the Campaign.

“An affordable rail network helps to keep congestion down, reduces pollution, and supports the economy."

The Campaign has set up a website, http://www.farefail.org, for supporters to follow if they wish to join in the protest.

Maria Eagle, Labour’s Transport spokesman, threw the party’s weight behind the campaign with a pledge that the party would not raise fares by more than one per cent above inflation if it returned to power.

She said the fare increases showed that the Government had “sided with train operators” against commuters.

“Life is already tough enough for families and commuters struggling with the increasing cost of living.

“But many commuters are in for an unwelcome New Year surprise this week when they discover that the price of their rail ticket has risen by much more than George Osborne promised.

“Instead of price rises being limited to one per cent above inflation, some of the most popular commuter routes will see the cost of a season ticket soar by hundreds of pounds.”

Other measures include a single definition of “peak and off-peak”: to prevent unwitting passengers being paying extra charges for having the ‘wrong’ ticket.

The party also wants to bring in a “right to the cheapest ticket” – which would force train firms to advertise the lowest price for journeys, and for passengers to receive a refund if they do not get it.

But Theresa Villers, the rail minister, attacked what she described as an unfunded spending commitment from the Opposition.

“We have already limited the fare increase this year to help rail passengers. But we also have to clear up Labour's deficit. Labour's proposal to spend more and more is not the answer.

“This latest statement is further evidence that when it comes to dealing with the deficit, Labour just don't get it. The long term sustainable solution to address passengers' concerns is to reduce the high cost of running the railways.

“That is why the Coalition is committed to a major reform programme to improve the value for money offered by the nation's railways."

i think we need to confirm our story before we talk. the price mentioned in U.K is not per litre. its per gallon. 1 gallon is equal 3.75 litres. pls, if you don't know about something don't come and write rubbish. lets keep the spirit up fellow Nigerians Subsidy must stay!!!
Re: Stop Moaning... Petrol Is 326.21 Naira a litre in the UK! by Thor(m): 4:51pm On Jan 03, 2012
The price quoted is per litre and not per gallon.

On another note, Ghana has also removed subsidies, but it seems that most Ghanaian people are taking it in there stride and understand the long term benefits for the country. Ghana has also offered to sell Nigeria electricity.

Ghana increasing it's prices is being touted as a reason that Nigeria had to increase the prices to stop the cross border smuggling angry

Cutting the subsidies will save the |Nigerian Treasury over 1 trillion naira in 2012, according to the government, which was heavily criticised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the wasteful use of public funds.

Atleast the ghanaian govt had the decency to announce a date for the take off of its removal, unlike our fisherman and his smart economist
in the UK you know exactly how much the govt will be adding to tax or fuel price way in advance not just at 12noon on a bank holiday

And ghanaians trust their government more than nigerians, they atleast offer better explanation in advance and not just blame smugglers for their actions
Re: Stop Moaning... Petrol Is 326.21 Naira a litre in the UK! by tlops(m): 5:51pm On Jan 03, 2012
Ghana is working! They have been able to generate constant electricity (and able to sell to us). The FG has only made a subject of campaign. The problem is that we dont trust the gov't. tell me what the govt has been able to maintain under our politicians (NITEL, NRC, NEPA etc). They should provide the public with how the allocations will be spent. How and who to hold accountable if the promise fail.

http://www.myweku.com/2012/01/fuel-subsidy-removal-contrasting-reactions-from-ghana-and-nigeria/

On the other hand the Nigerian government is of the view that the massive 1.2 trillion naira subsidy regime is so riddled with corruption that it no longer benefited the sections of society it was meant for.

That begs the question. Is the removal of fuel subsidy an effective or the only method the Nigerian government has at its disposal to tackle corruption? More importantly, why should Nigerians give away their birth right in the form of hundreds of million dollars in subsidy savings to a government that clearly cannot tackle corruption effectively? Will these savings simply not end up in corrupt pockets?
Re: Stop Moaning... Petrol Is 326.21 Naira a litre in the UK! by UyiIredia(m): 6:24pm On Jan 03, 2012
Mr Thor, your post is silly for the following (listed) reasons
[li]The social infrastructure in UK is much better than that in Nigeria. They have good electricity supplies, health care, education and social services[/li]
[li]Fuel is not UK's primary export. In other words, they do not have fuel in abundance as much as we do, therefore it was a wrong choice for comparison. You would have done better by comparing the fuel price in Nigeria to countries like say (Kuwait or SAE). These are oil producing nations who enjoy their commodity at a cheaper rate compared to other nations.[/li]
[li]Finally, the most annoying aspect was the manner in which it was removed. Most Nigerians had agreed that the subsidy would be removed by April during the presentation of the 2012 budget, removing it at the dawn of the New Year_literally !_ without duly informing Nigerian citizens shows the Nigerian government's lack of finesse. [/li]
I, for one, am not against the idea of subsidy removal if the longiterm benefits are assured. The problem is, with the antes of past governments, it's a very big if

Thor:

In Nigeria you should think yourself lucky, the price of fuel in most other countries on the planet is already double that of Nigeria even with the increase!!!

Those of you wealthy enough to afford a car need to pay their way!

If petrol is not subsidized, what do you think they should subsidize in its place?

what a stupic yardstick to measure,I believe u r a son of one of those senators .u don't know what hardship Nigerians face.u just sit in uk and spit sh**t
other contris have good transport alternatives like effectv trian system .or are u talking about electricity 99% of small scale and medium business are powered 24hrs by fuel in Nigeria .are u talking about our exchange rate or economy.the fact is that their should have been an effectv altanative befor this subsidy like steady electricty . in uk do u power ur home 24hrs with gen? .try dat for one week you will understand the pain of Nigerians on this subsidy issue

I believe others have said enough.

The OP and his supporters are over-pampered idiots who just think things like electricity, water, healthcare etc are a GIVEN in any society and really can't fathom how it wouldn't be.
Sadly this is also strangely the mindset of nigerian rulers. It's like they're all ruling from jand or something.

Total disconnect.

Have u people lived in naija at all? It is insensitive to comment on issues you do not understand, supporting the further oppression of the poor.

is it by force for u to start a topic, if you must post then you should have done all your homework and come out with a perfect analysis if you want to compare uk to nigeria.

and lastly, before you make a post next time have a rethink of why you had to travel and live in the uk in the first place, why not stay in nigeria.
Re: Stop Moaning... Petrol Is 326.21 Naira a litre in the UK! by Nobody: 10:56am On Jan 04, 2012
Here's a reference for you:
Consider UK with no power, no water running out the taps so you have to dig your own well or (electricity-powered) borehole in your backyard.
No city-subsidized public transport system, having to use taxis to go everywhere if you don't have a car. Minimum wage divided by 12, while price of everything else remains the same. . .

I could keep on going. But it's obvious at this point that this is just a troll thread.
The laws of Physics tell me that no one can be that daft. Unless your own stupidity (along with GEJ's) don pass all known laws of science.
