Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by odumchi: 7:02am On Jan 07, 2012 |
@ Ify I guess you can say so. When I was writing it, I was imagining it being spoken like this: "o wu nwoke (male) ka owu nwanyi (female)?" But come to think of it, they can go either way but it seems "ikom and inyom" fit best when describing genders. Just to add to the debate you guys are having; "ukam" is also plantain. Anyway, since we are on this topic, I'm just curious but what do you guys call "corn"? Do you call it "oka" or "akpakpa?" |

Who says "akpakpa"? (though I could probably guess) |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by Nobody: 7:34am On Jan 07, 2012 |
There are two Igbo words for 'speech' that I know of, okwu and asusu. Which can be better translated for 'dialect'? |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by ChinenyeN(m): 7:42am On Jan 07, 2012 |
mbatuku2:Neither. They both mean "language". Olu instead is the word for dialect/idiolect. |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by LogicMind: 7:54am On Jan 07, 2012 |
mbatuku2: okwu = word/speech (also advice/sayings) the verb form (ikwu okwu) means "to say". asusu = language onu = dialect/language |

Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by Nobody: 12:51pm On Jan 07, 2012 |
olu/onu both mean voice, which could be high or low pitched. For example, olu ukwu or onu ukwu. I dont think they properly convey the thought of a form of speech perculiar to a region. |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by Nobody: 1:09pm On Jan 07, 2012 |
NRI PRIEST: There are Igbo words for already, except you want to add more: bridge= akwa, ikpeke, ngongo tyres= afo P.S Impeachment means being charged or accused of wrong conduct, not removal. |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by NRIPRIEST(m): 2:42pm On Jan 07, 2012 |
mbatuku2: Who calls tire AFO ? Is it the same afo I know as stomach ? Because if it is then it dont make much sense. I got ukwugbo from; ukwu =leg.ugbo=vehicle; which brings us to ukwugbo. |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by ChinenyeN(m): 4:16pm On Jan 07, 2012 |
mbatuku2:You'll have to tell that our uncles and fathers. Olu means neck, voice, dialect and idiolect. Unless of course, you can coin a new expression that you feel will be satisfactory. Personally, I think olu is fine. I use it, and people understand the message I'm conveying (i.e. olu we nnu otu o nu) |

odumchi:Ngwa: ukhoru is corn |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by AndreUweh(m): 7:42pm On Jan 07, 2012 |
ChinenyeN:In Isinweke, corn is Ukworu. Very similar to what is called in Ngwa dialect. Ngwa people may have originally migrated from Isinweke. This is just a personal opinion which I have not discussed with anyone nor seen any research to think so. I know that there is a community called Umungwa just 3 miles east of Isinweke. Could it be the place Ngwas migrated from?. |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by ChinenyeN(m): 10:15pm On Jan 07, 2012 |
I very much doubt Ngwa came from Isinweke. From what I'm told, Umungwa migrated from Ngwa, though I don't know the details. |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by odumchi: 1:05am On Jan 08, 2012 |
ChinenyeN: Aro says akpakpa. I never knew there were varying words for corn. I always thought everyone said oka or akpakpa. |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by ChinenyeN(m): 1:40am On Jan 08, 2012 |
odumchi:I figured as much. At the bolded though, you'd be surprised how often I've hear that, since I first found out that people say "oka" for corn. |

Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by ezeagu(m): 1:35am On Jan 09, 2012 |
In English we have words such as 'butt' which can either mean to hit something, the end of an object, or even the 'butt of the joke'. So it's okay for a word to mean several different things. mbatuku2: Ogwe for bridge as well. |

Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by Obiagu1(m): 6:09am On Jan 09, 2012 |
NRI PRIEST: I'm surprised too. By the way, why can't we call tire taya? Who said we cannot adopt other languages? Hausa call Motor mota and Hausa to many people is the most complete language in Nigeria. Driver = Onye Okwa (Onitsha slang) |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by Nobody: 7:59am On Jan 09, 2012 |
Obiagu1: Nothing bad really, bruv. Not when we already have a better word. BTW, afo sounds more sexier to me than taya. In truth, no language is most complete. Not even Hausa or English. I'm of the opinion that English is not even a real language. Actual words that are English in origin are not hardly up to 10. |

Bike driver =Onye Owa(Onicha slangs) Driver=Okwa/Onya Ugbo ala Pilot=Onya ugbo elu. @Mbatuku,how do you pronounce this "ike" ? |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by ChinenyeN(m): 2:06pm On Jan 09, 2012 |
mbatuku2: I'm almost positive that a word/expression (or words/expressions) already exists for this, but it might have become one of those 'lost-to-oblivion' words that has (for whatever unknown and unfathomable reason) dropped out of usage. That being said though, I like this. It's simple and to the point. There's no breaking of the head thinking about 'how would the word translate from English to Igbo', and I think I may have an idea of the etymology. Long story short, I feel this should make its way into the lexicon, without fail. |
