odumchi: 'Ikpo ekpo' means (at least in my dialect) busy; active; hot; bustling. We use "ikwo ekwo" for many things in Anambra. You can say mmili n' ekwo ekwo, nor na mmadu na ekwo ekwo. Its interchangeable. Udo! |

Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by ezeagu(m): 4:32pm On Nov 24, 2012 |
ChinenyeN: Anyone other tries for "exquisite", because to be honest, I'm not satisfied with "ezigbote". There are different meanings for the word that one Igbo word may not cover, but for beautiful/perfect: Gbàmgbàm or gbèmgbèm or just gbàm! That's how people describe something that's so 'exquisite' there are no words for it (well it has different uses). I think we should start translating words in a different kind of field at a time, for example, words you'd find at a supermarket, airport, or even train station. Let's try airport (i'll do the ones I can): EDIT: with help of other translations from odumchi and Odenigbo Aroli. Airport - Ọnụnféba (onu, mouth opening, like ọnụ ụzọ, + nfe, flying + ba, enter) Flight - Nfési (nfe, flying + si, present tense) Terminal - Ụlọ nnyedo (house + parking, stoping present tense) Schedule - Usoro Building - Obu nkịtị Arrivals - Mbiambia Departures - Nfepu Escalator - Mfegoro Elevator - Mbugoro Stairs - Ǹkwà Live (instant) - Ugbua Wing (of building) Ticket - Ndeba Aboard - Ibai Desk - Ndokwasi Steward - Odibo Hostess - Ugo odibo Captain - Ishi nnya Pilot - Di nnya Cockpit - Obu nnya Departing - Njenje Landing - Ndàmà Take-off - Nfefu Bureau de Change - Mgbanwego Check-in - Nwabà Baggage - ngowngwo Suitcase - igbe Passport - Njerihu (face copy) Attendant - Ọnonunso Smoking - Nseanwulu Non-Smoking - Jufụ anwụlụ Exit - Npụga Emergency - Ọkụ'n'ụlọ Fire Drill - Du ọkụ Terrorist - Osuaghara Threat - Ndọpu aghara Final Destination - Nke oru Fuselage - Afo ugbo elu Seat - Oche Aisle - Uzọ oche Lost and Found - Efulefu Information - nwa ékwé (child of the ekwe) Help desk - Okpokoro nkwadọ Gate - Mgbidi Hall - Ọgwa Transfer - Mgbanwu Customs - Odubata Declare - Nziputa Search - Òbìbí nchọ X-ray - Íhé (light) nleba Security - Ndi nche Bomb - Ogbunigwe Liquid - Ihe na gba Overhead compartment - Uko n'ishi Flight Deck - Ogwe n'ugbo Transportation - Ihe Nnya Administration - Odibo ishi Passenger - Ọnwa ugbo O hikwara nne. I'll try and do the rest later. 1 Like |

Ezeagu daalu maka okwu ndia iroputalu. Schedule; "usolo" in Anambra means "guidelines" but since "schedule" is mostly used as a work related noun we could add "olu" to "usolo" and arrive to a word for "schedule". So,I will go with "usololu" Exit=npuga\npupu Take off=ntasu.different from "mbido" which means "start/begin". Smoking=nseanwulu. Stairs=ukwunligo...ukwu=leg...nligo=climb. Lost and found=Nfu n' nchota |

We should be very particular when we present our words so we don't get learners confused. I think its more easier to translate a "foreign" word in sentence than it is to give a straight translation of same word in a single "Igbo" word. I suggest we present single words, instead of giving and actual definition which is mostly long. We have to concise our presentations. |

Okay, this seems to be a more progressive approach. But let me do one that's simpler. Architecture (this is more of a case of rare words): Architecture Building Builder Skyscraper - Òruelu (O + ru, reach + elu) Tower - Ulo aja, ugele Duplex Mansion Manor Estate Compound Complex Building Site Room - m̀gbè Home - úhú (Abia/Imo people) Foundation - ntọ àlà Verandah Living room Bathroom Kitchen Toilet Bedroom Bed - àkwà Table - opokoro Draft Pillar - ogidi Column - aniga Floor (levels) - Al'ụlo Hall Balcony Store Pantry Attic Basement Materials Cement Concrete Thatch Asphalt Tarmac Fabric Plaster Plastic Clay - ngwa Plan (drawn) Map Curtain Beam - Roof - mgbachi Ceiling - mkpochi Wall - ájá Gate Door Bracket Veneer Portico - apata I'll do the rest later. |

I like your suggestion, Odenigbo, but it'll be hard because we might end up forming unusually large and cumbersome words. Anyway, I gave it a try. Geography/settlements: Island - avuralieye (means "where did you see land?" Ice - nminoyi (water + cold) Iceberg - ngwugwoyi ( means "a bundle of cold" Glacier - oke ngwugwoyi Continent - oke mkpukpu Peninsula - àgwojọ (àgwà, island + ojọ, scared; frightened island) Pond - owurido nmini Lake - oke owurido Bay - akwa nmini Earth's core - etiti uwa Tectonic plate - efere ali Cliff - ndavu Water fall - ọdìdà nmini Abyss - oke nsusu Valley - ǹdàgwúrú (central Igbo is 'ndida') Beach - onu asu Canyon - nnwálá àli Channel - uzo Cave - mkpu Mound - ugwu Escarpment - mkpoda Delta - ngasanmini (means "spreading of water" Floodplain - nminiriwe (means "just allow water to swallow it" Levee - mgbochi Oasis - ebe onwe onwe Swamp - ude) Channel - iyi nmini Coast - nko nmini Continental shelf - oke efere ali Coral reef - okpukpu azi (means "fish sculptures" Estuary - isi anyim Plateau - elu ali Plain - ogbogbo ali Lagoon - owurido ukwu State - ọha Territory - ali Town - ama City - ama ukwu Township - mba Village - ogo Ward - nke mba Hamlet - nke ogo Borough - mpagara mba Canton - nke obodo Capital - isiali Commune - ogo County - ebe Department - mpagara ochichi District - mpagara Governorate - ochi mba Sector - mpagara Municipality - mbegiri mba (meaning "part of a town" Province - mpagara Region - mpagara/ebe |
