Odumchi, what is the meaning of the ikpo ekpo and ikwo ekwo that you used? |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by odumchi: 7:01pm On Jul 27, 2012 |
'Ikpo ekpo' means (at least in my dialect) busy; active; hot; bustling. 'Ikwo ekwo' means 'to flow' [like a river]. We say 'nmiri na ekwo-ekwo' meaning "the water is flowing". These seem to adequately express the idea of traffic. |

I like ikwo ekwo more. Anyway. Ekwokwo/Ekpokpo uzo - Traffic (Arochukwu). |

Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by odumchi: 8:02pm On Jul 27, 2012 |
ChinenyeN: Next, memory. Memory already exists in Central Igbo as 'echiche'. Both thought and memory are referred to as 'echiche'. Ex: Cheta ihe ahu - remember that thing. Chee maka onwe gi - think about yourself. Echiche gi o di nma - is your memory alright? |

That's one of the words that exist and has to be researched since there was ingenuous embroidery, at least in the early 20th century. |

I know the word, in the Ngwa-Etche axis. I was just curious to see if others could think it up, either in their tongue or Izugbe(and if not, come up with something new). Anyway, I guess we can move on from that. How about labor (not the same connotation as "work")? I wish this topic had more activity though. |

Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by ChinenyeN(m): 3:51pm On Jul 31, 2012 |
It's difficult, because people have come to use labor and work so interchangeably. Well, work is like performing a task or a job. Labor is like toiling. It's holistic and deals more with effort and overall productivity. |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by odumchi: 4:13pm On Jul 31, 2012 |
To the best of my knowledge, the word oru is used to express the idea of work in all degrees. However I do know of the following terms in my dialect: ita avuvu - to suffer. ivaka nvaka - to try hard; to endeavor; to toil. In other dialects, these: igba mbo: to try hard; endavor. igbali mgbali: to endeavor. |
Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by ChinenyeN(m): 5:04pm On Jul 31, 2012 |
So essentially, a noun equivalent for labor would be pointless. |

Re: New Igbo Words Being Formed On Igbodefender.com by odumchi: 4:16am On Sep 17, 2012 |
A tier is essentially a level of an organized structure, so therefore the word for 'age grade' can be used to represent it. Tier - uke |
