Katsumoto:

Beaf,

If these people are as powerful as the government is making them appear to be, how will the chinese or any other foreign investor for that matter, be outside their area of influence? Or will the new refineries be outside Nigeria?

Dude, the Nigerian consitution was written so that ex-generals can loot and exploit us forever, they never ever reckoned that a well meaning person who they did not choose would ever sit in Aso Rock. God bless Obj.

Now, they put all the instruments to control oil revenues in the hands of the President (its not hard to guess why); they never for once suspected that one day, a President would sit in Aso Rock and use those same powers to dismantle the system.

GEJ can issue decrees to rewrite all the rules of engagement with our refineries. He has cut out the influence of the cabal, so the Chinese would be perfectly safe with the running of their refineries for profit. The new refineries are also in places where boko haram has zero influence like Lagos, Kogi and Bayelsa; so desperate acts would be tough to pull off.

Thank you, now you are seeing with me!
What transpired with the reps today should be a classsic eye-opener to all observers. Did you see the way they squashed the motion to pursue, investigate and arrest the cabal? That was a measure of the cabals strength given to us toasted and hot on TV. GEJ has taken a very great risk and that is why he will never back down. Its now an all or nothing fight, in fact I believe that is why Nigerian were lulled into thinking nothing was gonna happen, then boom!

We indeed have a very serious problem on our hands and the sources of the problems can move mountains in Nigeria.

grin grin ;DSo GLJoe is AFRAID of the CABAL!!!NO WONDER!!!WHAT A GRAND COMMANDER he is, Men he's TOAST if he should reverse the subsidy. I dont give a RATS ASS if he&his family r TOAST, let him just reverse the petrol thingy. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! angry angry angry

Beaf:

Cos are private refineries, owned by the Chinese, with the FG holding some shares. The Chinese are in it to make profits, not get paid for bogus imports.

The government is slowly but surely opting out of running the oil business and its corrupting financial largesse. That is why you people opposing its moves are effectively in a war against yourselves.

For some weird reason, this is the only time i will agree with @beaf, he got this analysis right. The problem is most government managed projects have over the years been mismanaged or sabotaged, because of different selfish interest of individual ahead of the country's interest at heart. Everybody is busy stealing as if they will die if they are truthful, biased arrangement because of ranka-de-de, zoning and quota system instead of the most qualified man for the job, its my tribe religion et al. The way forward is doing the job and doing it well, but Nigerians have learnt not to trust the current crop of politician, people that failed to improve on the electricity generating capacity of Nigeria, they fail to understand that trust is earned, hence the populace will not trust them with the savings they are proposing, because they will squander it as usual. The future looks brighter for nigeria, because people are beginning to wake up and demand accountability on the part of the government. GEJ can talk about subsidy if and only if

1. The Government cuts its overhead running costs, by reducing spending on legislators and cabinet members
2. Tackle the problem of corruption head on like the era of Ribadu
3. Pass the PIB
4. Revive the economy with good policies that encourages development
5. Take the issue of security very seriously
6. Reduce the veto power of the FG, but rather promote the true meaning of federalism, (where a state can remove its subsidy or implement it if it so wishes)

but in the meantime, return the subsidy and let us plan, and set realistic milestones and measurable constants on the proposal of how to reduce the cost of subsidy. Then we the people wil agree. Without this, no discussion.

Once again, nice one beaf.

the govt fear these cabals, that is evident. Why they do is what i'm yet to understand,

OAM4J:

If these few people (cabals) are as powerful as you claim, more corrupt and powerful than the entire Nigeria Police Force and the government can not identify and deal with them, then we have a SERIOUs problem on our hands. Because I see them move into other sectors of the economy soon and prolly hijack the government.

I think we should declare Emergency in the presidency before they take over and before it becomes too late.

manny4life:

Beaf, they should make me Secretary for Police Affairs, you will see how I will transform the whole police using accountability and implementation of whistle blowers program.

Questions, questions, questions. Why haven't they been identified, why can't the Presidency investigate them. Why has the Lower House skirted the issue. Why can't anyone uncover them. Why is corruption so rampant. Well NLC is on show tommorrow. Will they mention names. Will they roll out a list of their suspects. I mean they run these refineries, they administer the maintenance programs. They man the ports, they record the fuel imports. They work in the NNPC. They certify these contracts. Hell is there anything the NLC doesn't know. Is there anything we do not know about these cabals. So what is the grave fear of them.

Nigerians.  grin grin grin grin. The good news is that they are already in every sector of the economy. Both in the government and private sectors and will soon manifest in street near you.

The government must not give an inch. The matter is still cooking and until it is done, They say suffering is good for the soul.

I tired of this country oo, how do help a country that will not even reason at all.

Every medicine is bitter. Gov't cannot sustain refineries, we have done this for over 50 years, let them hands off.

Who no dey suffer?? There will never be a perfect time for any policy. People should know when they r been used for selfish gains.

How can we compare how-selves to developed countries and don't want to implement such policies to take us there.

I weep for this country, u want refineries but not liberalization, u want power but not privatization, u good education but it must be free, u don't want corruption in gov't but u are all corrupt, u want jobs but no sacrifice.

Other countries are investing in IT we are still struggling with this resource curse.

Subsidy is assistance paid to a business or economic sector mainly by government to producers, marketers or distributed as subventions in an industry for various reasons.

Why did previous Nigeria government pay PMS subsidy? May be because they believe we are blessed with oil and do not want Nigerians to suffer for what they are blessed with.
Why does the present government want to remove PMS subsidy?
1. They cannot afford it any longer due to all sorts of reasons. This is not acceptable at this stage
2. They want market forces to determine the pricing. This is understandable but must be done by carrying the citizens along. (We do not have to suffer for government lapses)
Let’s take a look at a scenario where enough refineries are built in the country and petrol becomes determined by the market forces. Petrol now becomes affordable in Nigeria and still expensive in neighboring countries, will that stop smuggling to neighboring countries? Will the government be able to realize its proceeds from export? How do they intend to stop the future cabals or will that be left for the next government. (First things first please)
The present government has to put in place policies that will checkmate the oil industry by putting stiff measures to control import and export through our borders.
Sanusi, Finance minister and others agreed that government is been cheated by the PMS importers or whatever they are called, which means that it does not actually cost N1.3trillion to subsidize PMS within the time frame. Why did they not take their time to actually correct the main issues instead of forgetting why PMS was subsidized in the first place?
These present economic team may mean well for Nigerians but are not going about it the right way. Let them go back to the drawing board. I believe they are testing Nigerians, we must say no to their present strategy until they come up with something that makes sense.
Is the president trying to give more money to the same criminals we know or have they changed over night?
Good luck looks like a person with good intension; maybe he should go start a charity or something else and leave that seat for competent leaders.
The president should not be surprised if Nigerians start asking him to vacate that seat. This may be the next thing coming. No more sentiments

Abuja – The Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, says part of the benefits that will accrue to Nigerians from the withdrawal of fuel subsidy will be the building of three new refineries.

The minister who spoke at a forum in Abuja on Sunday said this would help Nigeria to process its crude and meet local consumption.

“Nigerians should know that this oil resource has been given to this country over the years have not been properly managed. We have another opportunity to get it right.

“Niger Republic and so many of our neighbouring countries are building refineries around us with the intention to sell to Nigeria and with this deregulation policy one of the major gains will be the building of three new refineries.

It is so sad that most of us are so biased and filled with ethnic or tribal and religious sentiments. who among us that really understand fuel subsidy 100%? Is it not possible we seek knowledge about it before making offensive comments? Have we asked ourselves why Adams Oshomole, governor of Edo state and former chairman of NLC, who once kicked against price-increment of petroleum now support the move for subsidy removal? I think if the monies that will be saved from the process are used for the wise purpose of mr. President, it will be for our own good.

Actually One refinery cost 2.5 billion dollars not 6 billion of capacity of 450,000 barrels a day

A third of you estimate, thus with 6 billion dollars, we can buld at least 2 refinaries of 450,000 barrels/day and 1 refinary of 200,000 a day

a total of 3 refineries can be built with 6 billion dollars wink

Please use your other IDs and stop registering new one OK!!!

Stop acting stu.pid and stop thinking like a fish because of tribalism.

It seems after all the talk, shouting, teaching, lecture, protest, educating, directing, etc people are doing, some people still don't know why people are angry

1. Yes the system/ government is corrupt. In fact the country is teeming in corruption

2. Yes subsidy has to go and everyone supports the FG for that

3. Before the removal of subsidy, build our refinery so we would not have this same issue in the future. If we have our refineries working, we would not be paying subsidy to anyone and we can control the prices of our crude oil as a Nation.

4. Before removal of subsidy , CUT THE COST OF GOVERANCE not just by 25% because the bulk of the money made in government is not through salaries but be over PRICED projects. An average senator in Nigeria collects more than Obama the american president.

5. Now remove subsidy.

Other things people are protesting for because it was a build up of anger since 1970 and this was the opportunity for a revolution are

1. protest against corruption and the arrest of these people

2. protest against boko haram and killing of Christians/igbos

3. protest against the NEGLIGENT of the Niger-delta

4. Building of the Niger Bridge. Must the bridge collapse before we maintain and build the next ? Since we can save lives, why not do it now.

Now what is the point of thinking ahead when there is still corruption and non-accountability in the government ?

What is the point of thinking ahead when the next administration would tell us about removal of subsidy again ?

IS THINKING AHEAD NOT BUILDING OF REFINERIES ?

Is thinking ahead not protesting against corruption ?

In Nigeria today, we have No light, No security, No shelter, No good roads, No good water, No refinery even though we are oil producing, Total neglect of infrastructure, Total neglect of the Niger-delta, Total neglect of the Niger bridge, Total neglect of people dying in the North, Lack of accountability, Lack of credibility, Lack of industrial growth apart from Oil which the entire country is dependant on, Lack of economic growth apart from the telecommunication sector by OBJ.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would also what to use this medium to address people thinking it is an ethnic thing.

I have heard various people saying the protest is against "GEJ" "minority" and other sentimental words to describe the protest.

I would like to educate the people about the politics behind what is happening according to my understanding and I would really appreciate if I can also learn more from other posters home and abroad.

In 2010, Sanusi made speech to the House of reps (HOR) that they were thieves and they are the ones sucking Nigeria dry due to the huge sum of money paid to them monthly. The HOR shut him down and called him all sort of names.

In 2011, Sanusi during the channels debate said 1.6 trillion naira is paid to this people out of 1.8 trillion naira thus 200 billion Naira is left for development of the country.

This people are the senator, governors, HOR, HOA, chairmen and the business men that were labelled as oil benefit thieves.

Now people Imagine 200 billion left for 150 million people in 36 states out of total of 1.8 trillion Naira. Yes I am sure people would agree with me that subsidy has to go !!!!

All am doing here is to make people political aware of the situation right now and lets not forget the Iweala and the IMF factor.

Now people are NOT and I repeat NOT angry at the removal of the subsidy I mean at such rate the paying of subsidy is not sustainable. It has to go at one point or the other, either through GEJ or the next administration. Yes I respect GEJ and Sanusi for thinking ahead of time. That is very commendable but the Issues that cause the subsidy corruption are not yet addressed.

In the future the issue would come up again so what is the point ?.
Re: Three New Refineries Coming Says Works Minister by lastpage: 4:07am On Jan 09, 2012
Thank YOU, Alhaji! grin
Without any iota of disrespect (l took notice of you a long time ago, especially during the begining of GEJ's "probationary period" when he succeeded Late UMYA as President and then after the election and attending violence in the North), l will say YOU have come a long way! I commend you for your positive attitude to the current issues.
Your objectivity is worthy of emulation. Keep it up and dont "backslide" when the going gets tough! wink wink

I have also added Sanusi's speech to many of my post, where he pointed out and concurred that "CORRUPTION BY GOVT OFFICIALS (mostly)" is the bane of these fuel subsidy Palaver.
Sadly, he went on to conclude that the Govt is afraid to tackle these "Cabals" and instead will rather face the "cowardly masses" by imposing harsh IMF conditionalities (respects, to IBB and the SAP era! shocked) on already impoverished and traumatized Nigerians.

Why anyone still think that one is against this policy is because you are a Northerner or from ACN or for Power shift or a Christian or from Congo Kinshasha, beats my imagination.
We may have our differences BUT we are all Nigerians and the more we have people from a section of the country where a problem rears it ugly head condemning that problem in totality and in honesty, the more we will build trust amongst ourselves.

No one is against Deregulation/Removal of Subsidy if it is done with common sense, sincerity and interest of Nigerian masses UPPERMOST I THE HEART OF MR. President and his CABINET, including the NASS.
Is that too difficult to understand for any one?

We all have made suggestions, which a reasonable Govt would have debated with us openly.
E.g: Why do we insist that Refineries must be BUILT/REPAIRED FIRST AND ELECTRIC POWER LEVELS AROUND 75% before Subsidy should be removed?

1.) With our own refineries (say about four producing 1.5million/day), We can set our own "local price", we dont need to be towed up and down by fluctuations in international market.

2.) The Electric Power will serve as a substitute/main source of energy and less pressure /demand on PMS

3.) Less people will rely on Generator to supply power => Less consumption of PMS (fuel) => less exposure to any change in its price

4.) Industrial growth will naturally follow and job creation will not just be "a Ministerial song" but a reality as small scale entrepreneurs will spring up in a conducive atmosphere. Moreso, those refineries will generate thousands of jobs for our young graduates!

5.) Other Industries like Paint and Tyre manufacturing, PVC manufacturing, Fertilizer industry and a host of other Petro-Chemical based industries will spring up from this singular action.

6.) These would in-turn save our foreign reserve which we uselessly spend on importing refined fuel and the im[lication of a bulging foreign reserve is that the "Naira" will appreciate in value! (instead of all these useless interventions by IMF/World Bank and Sanusi!

6.) Even if Govt decides to sell fuel at N250/ltr since there is a viable alternative (Electric Power), less people will be negatively affected and those who do, have another choice

We can go on and on forever and any reasonable "Leader" will pause and look at these suggestions for a minute BUT these Jonathan (fortunately,, he is my brother from the South!) seems to be acting like the proverbial Chicken that wants to be roasted for dinner but which still immerses itself in Palm Oil"! Abi im enemies don swear for-am? angry angry

At times l feel he is under a kind of "Spell for failure"! cry cry Or is it just unbridled greed for looting?

I feel sad when my brothers from the South "blow" an opportunity like this, to impress the rest of the country that we are "very sound" in administration of the country and can be relied upon.

Cheers.

Those of you whom are saying silly stuff like, "let them build the Refineries first and then cut the subsidy" don't know a damn thing about economics. The fact of the matter is this, the gov. is trying to totally get out of the oil and gas business, same as they got out of the telecom business by privatizing it.

This is a GOOD thing people. As you can see, as soon as the gov. turned over the communications network of the nation to private hands, the industry grew astronomically. The gov. is admitting that it is a horrible business organizer, and is attempting to clean it's hands of all of their corporate entities, and the only way for them to make such an exchange in the oil and gas business is for them to cut all direct ties to that industry and allow for private corporations to come in and take it over.  This process is the DEREGULATION process.

Now that the gov. has cut it's ties, private corporations will very soon come and place their bids to begin filling that void, via a gradual and or mass development of refineries, tank farms, and filling stations, just as foreign Telecom companies came flocking in to develop and expand the nation's Telecom network once the gov. washed it's hand of it. With Nigeria being a mass source of oil and gas, the domestic price of the fuel will most likely, in time drop below the N65 subsidized price, once the private developers complete their refineries and other related developments in the nation, but non of this can get started until the gov. withdraws its hand out of the market.
