Breaking News: Strike continues as Jonathan’s meeting with Labour ends in deadlock

There was no end in sight to the ongoing general strike in the country over the removal of fuel subsidy on Thursday night as the meeting between the Federal Government and organised Labour at the Presidential Villa, Abuja ended in a stalemate.

The government’s side was led by President Goodluck Jonathan while the presidents of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Mr. Abdulwaheed Omar, and Trade Congress, Mr. Peter Esele, led a 17-man delegation from organised Labour and civil society to the meeting.

Omar told journalists after the meeting that the strike would continue as no agreement was reached at the meeting. He also said another discussion had been scheduled for Saturday.

The meeting began at 5pm at the Presidential Villa and Labour demanded that government must revert from N141 to N65.

THE PUNCH learnt that the Labour and civil society delegation joined the meeting at 6.30pm.

Jonathan and Sambo left shortly after the Labour leaders arrived at the meeting venue. But they returned hours later.

The strike and protests entered their fourth day today.

Earlier in the day, Mark confirmed that the meeting would hold, in a short interview with Senate correspondents in Abuja.

Speaking after meeting with Labour leaders at his residence, Mark said the Senate had succeeded in getting both sides to discuss the January 1, 2012 controversial removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

“Our efforts are to ensure that Labour and government sit down to discuss the issues and I think we have achieved that. There is going to be a meeting today between the government and the leadership of Labour,” Mark said.

Omar and Esele also confirmed the 5pm meeting.

The Senate president had on Thursday morning led a delegation of senators to the Presidential Villa for a short meeting with Jonathan and senior government officials.

The Senate and House of Representatives had at separate sittings called on Jonathan to revert to N65, in the interest of the nation, and enter into serious negotiations with Labour.

Also, eminent Nigerians such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former President Shehu Shagari; clerics, politicians; and leaders of thought had pleaded with Jonathan to revert the price.

Labour was represented by 17 members.

NLC said the meeting will continue on Saturday.

Nlc president said both parties are willing to shift grounds

He said they ve made progress but no resolutions yet.

Atmosphere was tensed.

There's no going back to N65 on the part of FG which is why there's deadlock.

Aluta Continua. The nation must be brought to its KNEES. No business as usual. They have stolen & looted enough. No good will come from Jonathan, he's a COMMON THIEF, that could not afford the cheapest thing on earth (shoes), while in school. Gradually, people will match to Villa & treat him like Gadaffi.

A common sense tells me where they are driving to. Well Labour Union has tried. I think they should succumb at this point. enough of these killings and social unrest. Labour should negotiate on N100 let's see what happens. Nigerians in the rural villages are really in pain. Let's call the strike to an end, we have tried!

Don't go there and negotiate the fake fuel subsidy removal only, seize this opportunity to demand for accountablity, transparency and reduction of GEJ Govt's profligacy. Tell him the other polilooters with our money, get him to commit to arresting them, retrieving our money and subsequently prosecuting them.

If you are willing to pay N100 you are subsidising the govts corruption and should be willing to pay N140.

Let GEJ be stubborn, people are realsing what a complete fraud and faliure PDP is. Win Win.  cool

Shutdown the oil and paralyse the whole country. No tankers should be transporting anything. cool

Labour is trying to play safe thats why there's no agreement in sight.

I think Labour should take something away from this struggle.

From what happened in Abuja tonight Fg and the govs that would benefit from subsidy money are unwilling to go back to N65/litre

Aluta continua, he who says Nigerians are fools must be made to come to terms with reality of the fact that it is the same Nigerians who voted him (GEJ) into power without taking a dime from him, will also ensure that he goes back to his village shoeless, cloth-less, and clueless. Aluta Continua, the strike continues. GEJ has just bagged an award, "Myopic Retardeen of the Year 2012" he and his cohorts and girls friends in government should be sent packing if they have NOT decided to accept that their decision is faulty and learn how to do things the proper way. He will send his soldiers and police to kill all, but the end justifies the means, he must go. No amount of police and army will intimidate the people who are resolved to get GEJ out of Aso rock if he refuses to listen.

You are a correct person. I am tired of this subsidy talk. What we should ask for is transparency. Abeg jor, why does your officials earning so much? Give us numbers. Subsidy is nonsense, it just the tip of the ice-burg

either way we suffer, so instead of suffering for nothing, let us suffer to make Nigeria better. Occupy till we overcome. For those in support of subsidy, if you ever buy petrol for less than N138 then shame on you.

I can't believe people are still on about subsidy removal.
The government has been shown up to be a big scam, a cesspool of corruption, and people are still harping on about 65 Naira. angry
Re: Breaking News. Strike Continues As Meeting Between Labour And Fg Ends deadlocked by Nobody: 11:10pm On Jan 12, 2012
Govt can end this madness by simply reversing the fuel subsidy removal

there is no need for talks with anyone to do that.
