The world over is spiced by indidivuals whom there society deems as intellectuals. These men and women are the engine of discourse and intellectual grow in their respective domains, and because of their genius capacity to invent and innovate, the human race as well. Intellectuals are thus bestowed their title because their words intorduce new ideas to the human race. Theory of relativity, human rights, womens liberation, the theory of dark matter, and so forth. It saddens me that nigerias 'intellectuals' have contributed nothing to the development of man kind let alone the development of nigeria. When soyinka and recently femi kayode and sanusi speak we all know the routine. They'll utter the opinion of 90% of nigerians only with more english then then the average nigerian can afford to bombast. Our intellectuals contribute nothing to nigeria and its thus safe to say we don't have intellectuals at all. They're all just opinion parrots. We dub people intellectuals for doing things we all do on nairaland everyday. One intellectual will say 'nigeria will split' another will say 'our government is corrupt' the next will say 'we need more refinaries' and nigerias will claim to be an intelligent people. Intellectuals the world over are solving human problems and helping people understand the world. We should stop insulting them by giving our nairaland opinion bloggers their title.

Are you not viewing things a tad simplistically ? What more do you want Nigerian intellectuals to do but keep talking and 'sensitizing' in the hope that ordinary Nigerians , the real custodians of power even if they don't know it, may eventually grow mentally evolved enough to seize the day from those who have crafted an evil system that uses the worst in the land to usurp our commonwealth for a few.

Did you not see so many "intellectuals" and respected Nigerians speak against the adoption of GEJ because thet believed his record ,without doubt, only revealed mediocrity? Yet what did Nigerians go on to do if not vote for the boy with no shoes blindly while ignoring the 'intellectuals' we should ordinarily listen to.

Intellectuals are not more duty-bound to sacrifice themselves merely because they are better thinkers than others. The onus of sacrifice should fall on all of us but that becomes difficult to see in practice with some of our brilliant Nigerians being a match for any on earth while most Nigerians remain simplistic creatures unable to oppose a candidate because they would rather believe he can do no wrong and has a messianic quality ,via his 'divine' journey to the top, instead of judge him on his record in public office. Please free our intellectuals. There is only so much they can do dealing with folks with virtually zero political sophistication. We even see this on NL with how discussions are easily derailed because folks prefer to be sentimental rather than pragmatic.

The Intellectual Class must be very careful with their words and brainpower.

Gbawe you right that assuming nigerians don't know what's wrong with nigeria and ifyou ask anyone of them they'll give you the correct answer. We don't need to call someone an intellectual for giving that exact same correct answer. Our problems are blatant and well known, knowing them isn't a merit of intelligence. Say nigerian politicians are corrupt isn't intellectual its obvious. Tell me why humans are inclined to criminality. Tell me what in our culutre or brain arches are leaders and selfs towards lawlessness. Invent a new form of handling public funds that will wedge it away from human hands. Come up with an idea, do just parrot an opinion. Gej didn't win because nigerians are dumb, he won because he ran a better campaign then buhari who gave speeches in hausa. Even today gej being a good or bad pres is a matter of opinion and an intellectual isn't responsible for telling you who to vote for. In nigeria though, telling someone who to vote for merits you as an intellectual. Our country is plagued my intellectual laziness. We haven't thought of new ways to do anything since colonialism. We have problems the west doesn't but wait for them to invent solutions. Boko haram is met with shootings and arrests, mend shootings and arrest. No ideas, strategies, or innovative soultions like every reasonable country in the world presents when faced with problems. Intellectual laziness

Poster, forget it! our intellectuals have nothing profitable to offer.They prefer to stay in a beer-parlour. There is a university in a town here in Nigeria where the number of bars and beer-parlour out-numbered the residential buildings. Nigeria is finished!

Lolz!
The words of a lazy "intellectual." Everything to you is a war against unseen enemies.

@OP
We should also add that our intellectuals are escapists, loudmouths, selfish mofo's and pocket stuffers who don't give a damn if their neighbours kids go hungry.

@ ikengawo,

I can understand your frustration, you have given up on Nigerian intellectuals since Soyinka and co could not solve problems that you deemed unique to Nigerians. I know what is the issue,
If you have read my previous posts (pls read through them), you would observe that I have cracked the fundamental origin of criminality that is the second nature of Igbo people of Nigeria ( South East). This involved indepth intellectual rigour. Interestingly, my exposing this to Nigerians has led to decrease in crime rate among the focused group as they could see the cause of their anti-human nature.

At the moment, I am working on the root cause of northern Nigerians' imbecility cum docility cum brutish behaviour in view of curing them.

With that said, you should not worry anymore about dearth of intellectuals in Nigeria. We are seriously working,

So you are back? 2 questions. What would you call yourself? A non-intellectual by any other name? And what is your contribution?
