Erratic Gas Supply From Nigeria causes Ghana Electricity Outages by Igwe9(m): 2:16pm On Feb 07, 2012

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been compelled to begin load shedding exercise in various parts of the country due to erratic supply of Gas from Nigeria’s West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP).

The WAGP is an initiative of several ECOWAS member countries including Ghana, Benin an Togo, inaugurated during the Obasanjo administration, the pipeline is to supply gas from the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline to feed gas-fired power plants in the West African countries.

Nigeria is contractually obligated to supply Ghana 100 million standard cubic feet per day (mscf/d), however the volumes have dropped to 40 mscf/d.

This has caused electricity regulators in Ghana to embark on load shedding exercise, dropping the power supply by 100 MegaWatts during peak periods of 6pm to 10pm.

According to a statement released by the Volta River Authority (VRA), “VRA has …requested the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to undertake a load management exercise in various parts of the country, until the situation returns to normalcy”.

The statement continued, “We assure our valued customers and the general public that VRA is committed to ensuring the supply of adequate power to all its customers, and regret any inconvenience caused.”

can people with no brain now see that one of the factors we can't and do not have adequate electricity is gas supply
1- no gas network to some stations was planned
2. naija piple vandalize gas pipe lines
3. Compensation issue to have gas network

there are so many factors mitigating against having adequate energy
1. govt lack of sincerity of purpose and commitment
2. the naija piple factor
3. wrong persons in places of authority
4. tribalism. what prevents naija leaving the states, LGAs, communoties regions managing their own energy, ?
ppipe with their brains in their stomach

Re: Erratic Gas Supply From Nigeria causes Ghana Electricity Outages by ministergh: 3:06pm On Feb 07, 2012
The west africa gas pipeline project has been there close to a decade now. it was contructed to help countries like nigeria benefit fom their oil wealth. Initially all nigerian gas released into the air as waste but westa frican countries that needed the gas decided to contruct the west african gas pipeline so that otherwise waste gas could be sold to others who need. Its bad the naigerian government has opened its mouth wide chopping everything. people should not critisize ghana at all cos they are even helping our government by buying our gas. Their volta lake at full capacity could power several westa african countries. They are constructing several hydro dams now and very advanced in utilising the gas they will get from their recent oil find. we jst have to put pressure on our government to be more thoughtful of us. Ghanaian seem to have some control over their leaders but we dont. when ghanaians start talking on radio stations about issues, the next thing u see is the government acting.

"When Nigeria sneezes Ghana catches cold" Is these type of bullshit talk that got the country so backward. Most Nigerians are so prideful to the point that it's hurting them and the nation. Humble yourself and trust me Nigeria will go forward and become what Nigerians want it to be. The thing that should be talked about here is how SAD it is that African countries have so much resources yet there's nothing to show for it. A country bless with natural gas cannot even get eletricity 24 hours 7days a week. It's not about Nigeria being the "messiah" for Ghana. We all need each other to survive in this world. Even the rich man need the poor man to be able to survive and vise versa, GOSH, when will Africans ever see the CLEAR PICTURE on the wall

IS THIS CONTRACT THAT OBJ SIGNED ACCOUNTED FOR? DOES OUR GOVT TELL US WHAT THEY DO WITH THE MONEY GENERATED FROM THESE SUPPLIES ? ITS TIME WE LOOK INTO IT SINCE THERE IS NOW FREEDOM OF INFORMATION.

IF NOT FOR CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA  , WE WOULD BE A FORCE TO RECKON WITH IN THE WORLD.
Re: Erratic Gas Supply From Nigeria causes Ghana Electricity Outages by ministergh: 3:37pm On Feb 07, 2012
This gas is sold, so we get money for it so nothing to fear. We cannot use all our gas and we cannot depend on it solely for power. i dnt think the gas ghana gets gives it up to 10% of power but due to the fact that they get light often, they complain a lot when there is a power outage. it is like a that has been winning the world cup. quarter finals or semis is nothing to the country of the team.
Re: Erratic Gas Supply From Nigeria causes Ghana Electricity Outages by Igwe9(m): 3:43pm On Feb 07, 2012
But on a more serious note I was flabbergasted when I visited one Ghanaian's forum and the way they talk about Nigerians, almost all of them insulting Nigerians calling us all sort of names, imagine the country we support their national team whenever Nigeria is not in the tournament could be saying all sort of nonsense about Nigeria that not even a single one of them could defend us. We've been busy playing Big brother kinda of role while they're busy backstabbing us.

Hopefully its gonna end up being to your tents oh Israel.

YES, THE GHANIANS HAVE THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN, WHEN NIGERIANS OWN THE MOST EXPENSIVE CARS AND HOUSES IN THEIR COUNTRY, MOST OF THE MAJOR COMPANIES, ARE OWNED EITHER BY , LEBANESE -CHINESE OR NIGERIANS, THEY ARE ALWAYS INTIMIDATED BY NIGERIANS.

HOW WILL YOU FEEL WHEN FOREIGNERS OWN 90% OF THE BUSINESSES IN YOUR COUNTRY ? CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT NIGERIA'S POPULATION IS OVER 150M AND GHANA POPULATION IS 25M IF 10% OF NIGERIANS ARE IN GHANA, THEN YOU KNOW THAT NIGERIANS ARE EVERYWHERE IN GHANA, AND IT SEEMS LIKE THEY WANT TO TAKE THEIR COUNTRY FROM THEM .

WHEN A GHANIAN IS TRYING TO NEGOTIATE ON A PROPERTY TO BUY, A NIGERIAN WILL COME FROM KNOW WHERE AND BUY IT WITHOUT BARGAINING - IT DOES NOT FEEL GOOD.
Re: Erratic Gas Supply From Nigeria causes Ghana Electricity Outages by ministergh: 3:57pm On Feb 07, 2012
The thing is our population is big and theirs is small and definately a lot of our people may go in there. while 500,000 or what more people may not look too big, it may look very big to them considering their size. There are a lot of Ghanaian who love nigerians. There are loads of liberians also there and currently ivorians but am not sure they hate us. some will definately talk trash but in all this we dont have to do same. If you come to Odo rice, meaning love rice, area where i am now, u will be happy how we live with them. once in a awhile something may come up but geenerally, they are tolerant. we as african should embrace ourselves cos it is only us who can build our continent. the white ruled us for centuries and it may not be easy but fighting is not the way out. we have a lot to offer ghana but we can also benefit from them.

Too many shiitheads here who are very ignorant and arrogant

Do you know Ghana has already started building Gas plants?

Yes, it would be supplying West Africa and you can shove your gas where the Sun does not shine!
Re: Erratic Gas Supply From Nigeria causes Ghana Electricity Outages by salamander(m): 4:12pm On Feb 07, 2012
I think some ppl are just missing the point. Just be reminded the supply of Gas to Ghana is not free. And we are not complaining to any person in particular. It is a way of letting the public know some of the challenges the Electricity Company is facing so as to bear with them.

As for those who know the history of Ghana and Nigeria, there is no need to say more. No matter what some ppl will say, we have been very good neihgbours and we continue to be. Long live Ghana-Nigeria relationship.

^^^ Thank you Salamander, here in Nigeria, we have no problem with Ghana, we have Ghanaian friends, we visit the country often and its very rare to see a Nigerian peddling lies about Ghana or trying to smear the country's image. I'll like you to visit your forums and sensitize your people on the need to maintain decorum and avoid dwelling on 9ja bashing. Its very annoying when people bite the very finger that fed them.

And when did you feed Ghana?
Re: Erratic Gas Supply From Nigeria causes Ghana Electricity Outages by ministergh: 4:34pm On Feb 07, 2012
maybe we should stop using those words like smal ghana, we feed them, big brother, giant of africa, and the tall list and just focus on development. maybe they dnt wanna hhear that.

Ghana discovered Oil in commercial quantities only 2 years ago, and it's partners apparently made a record in setting up infrastructure and started production in a YEAR.

Though production is low at the moment, it is expected to increase with time. With good management and accountability this discovery is expected to improve their economy.

Nigeria has been producing oil in huge commercial quantities for well over 60years, yet over 80% of Nigerians live in abject poverty, what a shame!

That is what Nigeria should worry about.

My dear Ironi, Poverty is relative o. When the Europeans say ''poor'', we might listen a bit. But when a Ghanaian starts talking about poverty in Nigeria, it means the world is really coming to an end.

Not really, given the amount of money pumped into the Nigerian economy since it started Oil production, this statistics is just unacceptable.  Nigeria has huge resources, the problem is, it has a character flaw which is making such progress impossible.
