The Woman Who Could Break America’s Control of the World Bank[/size]

It would be the first time in history the World Bank was run by a non-American but Nigeria’s Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala stands a real shot at claiming the title. This week, two events dovetailed to boost the chances of the charismatic West African economist.

First, the discovery of controversial remarks written by Jim Yong Kim, President Obama’s pick, who, in the 2000 book Dying for Growth, praised Cuba for “prioritizing social equity.” Kim also leaned on quotes from anti-capitalist Noam Chomsky and wrote that “the quest for growth in GDP and corporate profits has in fact worsened the lives of millions of men and women.” Second, the unprecedented push Okonjo-Iweala is receiving in elite publications as her record is compared with Kim’s.

Okonjo Iweala
In the new issue of The Economist, the magazine’s editors give a full-throated endorsement of Okonjo-Iweala, saying the gap between her resume and Kim’s “changes the calculation” over a non-American running the World Bank. “Ms Okonjo-Iweala is in her second stint as Nigeria’s finance minister,” write the editors. “She has sobered up its public finances and injected a measure of transparency. She led the Paris Club negotiations to reschedule her country’s debt and earned rave reviews as managing director of the World Bank in 2007-11. Hers is the CV of a formidable public economist.”

No less flattering was he endorsement by The Financial Times on Tuesday, which touted her “real-world experience” of policymaking in one of the toughest regions in the world. “Her experience in tackling corruption would be helpful in the battle against the misuse of Bank funds,” FT’s editors wrote. “Her reforming drive has earned her credibility with the international community. That, and her charismatic personality, should help her to rally support for the Bank.”

It’s clear she’s well-liked but could she really break America’s 70-year hold on the bank’s leadership? “Yes,” says The Guardian’s Lant Pritchett in a detailed roadmap for her ascendancy to the presidency. Two major factors during the nomination process include the vulnerability Kim poses to Obama during his re-election and the threat of European leaders rushing behind Okonjo-Iweala.

One major vulnerability for Kim is, strangely, his qualifications. “Kim is a doctor and the narrowness of his expertise is likely to raise concerns among the bank’s big borrowers, given the array of issues a full service development organisation must address,” The Guardian’s Pritchett writes. He says “Critics of the Obama administration will seek to gain maximum leverage from Kim’s views on economic growth, opposition to transnational corporations, and praise of Cuba’s healthcare (and Castro as a leader).” The Economist also latched onto Kim’s credentials in today’s editorial. “Had Mr Obama not nominated him, he would be on no one’s shortlist to lead the World Bank.”

If that doesn’t put pressure on the administration, rising support for Okonjo-Iweala very well could. “For most countries, choosing Okonjo-Iweala vindicates the principle that the organisation’s head can be chosen on merit,” Pritchett writes. “She is clearly the best candidate for those countries that want a broad development agenda at the World Bank, which includes all the big borrowers and emerging-market countries that benefit from continued engagement with the bank.” And then there’s the awkward position it puts her opponents in. After all, does the president really want to be defending an under-qualified American when a charismatic, highly-credentialed African woman is running for the position?

If she gets it,good for her. But it will likely mean that for Nigeria, and Nigerians, the so-called new plan for development will be once again abandoned ,and we may have to wait for the next administration to come play us the same lines and then start the game all over again. sad sad sad

If Ngozi eventually gets it, she won't be the first non-american to run the world bank. James Wolfenson, the former world bank president is from Australia.

the baggage of stress, worries, the naija situation is better for her and the nation.
people can tap from her for the global market.

James Wolfensohn was born in Sydney, Australia, on 1 December 1933.
In 1980, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
He accepted nomination to serve as president of the World Bank in 1995.
In October 2010, Wolfensohn regained his Australian Citizenship.

Bottomline: James Wolfensohn was an American citizen while he served as World Bank President. Who knows Ngozi may be an American citizen too!

My opinion is that American control of the World Bank is not just in the nationality of who runs it. He who pays the piper dictates the tune. America is the Worlds Bank largest contributor with a 15% voting share on the board. In contrast Nigeria as well as most African countries have less than 1% in voting powers.

MIND GAMES...
That publication isnt meant to propel Ngozi Iwela's candidature and eventual winning the job. It is strategically meant to pave the way for her to lose.
No doubt, America has a stronghold on the World Bank and just "if" Ngozi Iweala can break that stronghold, the writer has just thrown it open why Ngozi Iweala shouldnt be allowed anywhere near the World Bank Presidency. America knows the way round when it comes to international politics. Pulling a string here and there is enough to turn the polls against or in favor they choose.
Ngozi Iweala has an uphill task, i must say! We can only wish her the best.

the world will start having untouchable cabals if she becomes the world bank president.
i will prefer make somebody from somalia win iweala the way cotonou man win jonathan.

One thing the columnists seem to forget is that the US can and will, as always, call upon the support of their main allies (the EU and Japan). Together, they make up 54% of the total voting power, which makes any US-nominated candidate the odds-on favourite.

Until there is a fundamental shift in the voting power of the Bretton Woods institutions, I don't see the US losing the headship of the World Bank, nor Western Europe the IMF.

just like the black face of obama is used to woo africans and propel africom so will Mrs Iweala would be used to propel economic doom for africa, Africa is the prize and the battle ground is africa, and anybody who knows anything about Strategic studies and planning knows that by population, dispersion, resources, military might and number, Nigeria is Africa. anyone who dominates nigeria dominates africa, very few people know this, and fewer people are bent on making use of this knowlegde.
why would Nigerian leaders continue making harsh economic policies when the life of the common man is already hell ?
why would they police patrol be called off in times of increasing security tensions ?
why would the President continue to fan and appease all these factions and seperatist movements instead of doing what any resonable leader should do to ensure the stability of the nation ?
All these are part of the a very cohesive psychological warfare being downed on nigeria.
very soon when things degenerates and gets out of hand we will all see what we had done to our selves.
You people should understand one basic rule of national security, considering technological advancement and economic power, our only bet for defending ourselves is our size and that means we have to be united.

I expected Nigerians to be happy to realize that we have the best brains amongst us. Whether Iweala wins or not, the columnist has proven that she is the best candidate for the job, and that alone is success. America and the white Obama can continue their pawn games!

This is bad for her world-bank quest.

If she is going to world-bank to fight USA, then expect failure.

Her position at the World-bank won't change AFRICA, cos the WORLD-BANK still depend on donors(US and WEST) for fund.

what a load of bollocks!

what is the difference between the average nigerian and a slave?

answer: at least a slave knows that he is in bondage.

No sane nigerian would bother taking on board any of the misinformation contained in that s.tupid write up because Okonjo Iweala and the world bank are one and the same thing - this woman has effectively destroyed the standard of living of 99% of average nigerians by implementing some of the most draconian economic policies known to man - pollicies that many western economists describe as genocidal in nature becuase of the terrible misery, poverty and suffering they inflict on ordinary people.

The worst part of it is that she is still not finished destroying the living standards of her fellow nigerians.

As for the ridiculous idea that she will be breaking america's control over the world bank - only a naive fool would beleive such BS, how can a servant who has been tasked to do the bidding of her master now be said to be breaking the same master's control?

A servant who was instructed by her robber baron masters to help them steal billions of dollars of our foreign reserves under the guise of renegotiating a non existent debt which had been paid off in the early 90s.

i pray that this woman will receive her punishment as soon as possible for the terrible way that she has exploited, abused and betrayed her own country.
