Bayelsa State speaker, Honourable Konbowei Benson Friday, has talked tough on the call for the impeachment of President Goodluck Jonathan by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), saying the call was an insult to the Ijaw nation.

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Piriye Kiyaramo, the speaker, who said the people of Bayelsa State had been following the controversy ignited by the ACN with interest, noted that Ijaw people deserved to benefit from the corporate social responsibility of companies benefitting from their locality.

He said it was an insult for the ACN to say President Jonathan should be impeached because a company rehabilitated a church in his village.

“ACN members who are Ijaws should take time to educate their national leaders on this issue. ACN leaders should not mix politics with religion. It will create a very bad impression about their party around here, especially given the fact that the national leaders of that party and four of its five governors are Muslims. The members should also tell their leaders that Ijaw value their spirituality and also would not take insults from outsiders who like to make value judgements about others.
"We know that corporate businesses, including banks, rehabilitate roads in Lagos as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. Will it be fair to call for the impeachment of the governor of that state simply because his government does business with the banks? We know companies in the South-West are more alive to their responsibilities because of the active media there. Whatever is souce for the Lagos goose should be souce for the Bayelsa gander.

“ACN, with its roots in the South-West should reflect on the importance the Yorubas attach to their cultural and religious development. For anyone to say Otueke people do not deserve anything from a company that has benefitted from the locality which is Bayelsa State is rather unfortunate. For the ACN to say we do not deserve this church is for it to say we should be spiritually baren. It means those saying this do not think well of us.

“Here in the Niger Delta, our grouse is that companies don't show enough concerns to their host communities by way of CSR. These companies don't give back to the communities from where they get jobs by way of projects.

“So, when we see a company like Gitto seeing to the spiritual development of Otueke people by renovating their church, we are happy with that company. This gesture, to the Ijaw nation, will outlive the company and present generation of Ijaw people who President Jonathan represents today.

In a related developmenty, a member of Otuoke community, Reverend Israel Ege, condemned the opposition for accusing President Jonathan of receiving a bribe by allowing the Gitto Construction Company to renovate St. Stephen Anglican Church in his hometown.

Speaking during a telephone interview with Sunday Tribune on Friday, he stated that; “iIt is demonic on the part of the opposition to make mountain out of a molehill over the matter.

“President Jonathan did not ask the company to renovate the church. Rather, the community requested the assistance of the firm.

“The church was in a mess and this prompted the company to intervene by rehabilitating it. It is imperative for the opposition to desist from politicising issues that have to do with the church. We should strive to promote peace and stability of our nation by engaging in constructive criticisms that could engender the development of Nigeria.”

When Sunday Tribune visited Otuoke on Thursday, some of the residents near the church also decried the controversy trailing the renovation of the church.

A resident, identified as Ebi Dorgu, remarked thus: “I see no reason the rehabilitation works carried out by Gitto Construction Company should be elaborated by the so-called opposition.

“When this church was in a dilapidated condition, nobody raised highbrow. People of this community, most especially worshippers in St. Stephen Anglican Church, implored the company some years back to assist in rebuilding it and now that it has been done, what is warranting series of complaints over the matter?”

Another resident, Mrs. Stella Otazi, who also attend the church told Sunday Tribune that; “it has always been the practice among some people to raise alarm over issues that have to do with Jonathan. This is attributable to the fact that he is from Otuoke. I do not believe that he had used his position to compel the construction firm to renovate the church you are referring to. The company, out of sympathy and consideration, decided to rebuild the church to assist our community.”

The two maps below shows that Ijaw land don't really have that much oil fields - and the little they've are mostly off-shore oil fields.

ACN's domination of Yoruba land (the SW) does not make it a Yoruba party. . . . pls let's be more objective here.
The renovation of the church in 'Otuoke' is very strange to me, especially when we consider the type of projects the oil companies usually execute when fulfilling their CSR before now.
The fact that it is coming immediate after Gej complained about the state of the church in question, tells it all.
One thing i find strange about this and nobody seem to be observing is a company of such status (which shld be open to the public) choosing a relatively private institution to fulfil their CSR, if our brother up North shld take after this pattern in pursuing their hidden agenda, i hope the Ss folk defending Gej/the defaulting company won't see anything wrong in it.

Shymmex was talking about in-land oil fields that are actually located in the South South. From what I've read, the both of you are saying that the bulk of oil production in the SS occurs outside of Ijoland. My question is where then could that be? I thought it was widely known that Bayelsa state and southern Rivers state are the principal oil-producing states in the SS?

Anyway, according to the Bayelsa State website, Bayelsa produces thirty percent of Nigeria's oil wealth. If you add this to the oil being produced in the Ijo-held areas of Rivers and Delta (Warri zone) state, it will be clear that most (not necessarily an overwhelming majority) of the oil in the SS resides in Ijo areas. Besides, the fact that they have been the hardest hit by oil mishaps and environmental issues attests to this fact.

I stated Warri to make a reference to the oil producing areas of southern Delta state not to necessarily say that the Ijo own Warri.

some of the so call claim to oil are scam by most of this community. What happen is , the nigeria govt have alway claim it does not make money from internal generated revenue, claim all revenue is from oil.

the reason they made this claim was for the unity of Nigeria. Lagos generate 240 billion ,just a state. but Nigeria govt claim it hardly makes money. Which is not correct. MTN makes more than 5 billion dollar. It put the nigeria govt internal generate revenue at about 2.4 billion naira. And since we are looking at pictures.

The spam bot banned me before but I'm back now. Bayelsea state produces less than 10% of Nigeria's oil wealth. What was posted on the Bayelsea state website is pure fallacy.

As for Delta state, 90% of the oil produced in Delta state are produced in Itsekiri and Ilaje land - Ijaw land only produces 10% of the oil wealth there.

The biggest oil producers in Nigeria by state are:

- Rivers.
- Akwa Ibom.
- Delta.



- Bayelsa is a distant 4th.

you are wrong in rating of oil production in nigeria by state. river state is not number 1. it just has refinery because oil was first found in that area, but not because it produce so much oil.

Church Gift: ACN slams PDP, Presidency, insists on Jonathan’s impeachment.



The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has slammed the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Presidency for going hysterical and resorting to crudity in their separate reactions to its (ACN) call on the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against President Goodluck Jonathan for soliciting and accepting a church ‘gift’ in contravention of the country’s laws.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the ACN said; ”For the avoidance of doubt, there was nothing exculpatory in the pedestrian statements issued by the PDP and the Presidency. Instead of employing facts to explain to Nigerians what they felt transpired, they resorted to name calling and endless ramblings.

”Since the statements did not deny that the church in question was constructed or ‘renovated’ by a foreign construction firm taking contracts from the government and that the church is situated in the President’s community, and since they did not refute the statement credited to the President himself that he solicited and received the ‘gift’, then we are compelled to renew our call on the National Assembly to urgently launch impeachment proceedings against the President.”


ACN said the presidential spokesman’s explanation that the church’s renovation is part of the construction company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and that the church does not belong to Jonathan or his family is too untenable and actually compounds the issue.

”In other climes, the President and the company will give a full account and a full scale investigation will be launched. Instead of the President’s handlers to be remorseful for what is, at the very least, a poor error of judgment by the President or his community in accepting this Greek Gift, they resorted to firing darts at imaginary political opponents of the President.

”The reactions never mentioned the fact that the President himself admitted soliciting and receiving the ‘gift’ from the construction firm. One would have expected that they will put a lie to this by causing the President’s speech at the inauguration of the church to be played for Nigerians to hear”, ACN suggested.

The party however, decried the President’s handlers for being grossly incompetent in the discharge of their duties. “Otherwise, they would have ensured that the President does not make statement that will put him in bad light. Had they done that, they would have saved themselves from having to issue, in regular intervals, statements that do no credit to the competence and professional standing of those who sign them,” it said. (No doubt, Abati ffucked up and this cause the retardeen to goof again. Abati should be sacked)
