Haba! Is that the only thing you could pick from several lines and points in the entire story? Well, his complexion is of no consequence except of course you are racist (not just tribalist) and subscribe to the redneck's theories of racism. That as it may, I think his work is really excellent, by many standards. Where I live, you'd see the people here build, clean, repair, fix, etc all day long, and they are just human beings - nothing special. Now, it would be real fresh air if the dumb ass Odechukwu Retardeen could actually get off off his fat flat nose and commission projects instead of vowing and vowing!!

Lagos begins development of agro-industrial parks

As part of efforts to further strengthen its industrial base and create thousands of jobs for Nigerians, Lagos State government is embarking on the development of two new Agro- Industrial Parks.

The parks which are to enjoy the best of infrastructure and aiding facilities are being sited at Imota in Ikorodu and Ilara-Igbonla in Epe Local Government Area of the state.

The state is also embarking on the development of three new enterprise zones to accommodate over 500 micro and small enterprises with particular focus on artisans and tradesmen such as metal fabricators, block moulders and cane weavers.

Olusola Oworu, the state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, told BusinessDay that work has commenced already at the Imota Agro-Industrial Park, which sits on a 22 hectares land.

“The land has been cleared and fenced. The provision of infrastructure comprising drainages and road network measuring 2.27km is in progress. Presently over 1.8km of drainage channel is being constructed and it is hoped that work would be completed within the next six months in accordance with the work-plan,” Oworu said.

The park, she added, is designed to have its own captive power to guarantee uninterrupted power supply. “Towards this end, a power audit of the park has been conducted by the State Electricity Board. At present, rice processing factory has been established at the park, while several other investors have expressed interest to establish agro-allied industries therein.”

The commissioner also informed that the clearing and fencing of the 100 hect Imota Agro-Industrial Park, which sits on a 22 hectares land.

The commissioner also informed that the clearing and fencing of the 100 hectares Agro Industrial Park at Ilara-Igbonla has reached 90 percent completion and the ministry is at present working on the design of infrastructural facilities that would be required at the park.

Oworu also revealed ongoing plans by the state government to complete enterprise zones in different parts of the state. “Enterprise zone is the smallest unit of the cluster concept meant to create communities of complementary businesses situated in the same location with enhanced environment, social and economic support structure and facilities that encourage standards and competitiveness,” she explained.

She said that government was promoting the development of enterprise zones to accommodate micro and small enterprises with particular focus on artisans and tradesmen such as metal fabricators, block moulders and cane weavers most of who are presently operating in inappropriate and oftentimes unauthorised locations across the state.

“All the three sites earmarked for the development of the zones in Ijanikin-Ojo, Gberigbe-Ikorodu, and Ibeju-Agbe Ibeju-Lekki have all been cleared and fenced. In line with the state government’s policy direction on public private collaboration in project implementation, my ministry has been holding talks with a number of investors both local and foreign on the possibility of attracting investment in the area of infrastructure provision and overall development of the zones.

“When completed, the enterprise zones are expected to provide decent and permanent accommodation for micro and small enterprises. The enterprise zones are expected to accommodate not less than 500 enterprises with employment potentials of over 10,000 people directly and indirectly.”

Way to go Mr fashola. This is the only Governor I have enormous respect for his sincerity of purpose. Unlike most of the governors that are busy playing politics and wasting money useless projects, fashola has demonstrated a grasp of what needs to be done and is bold enough to do it even with the very hectic lagos politics. More greese to your elbo bro.....I am definitely going to be working in one of these places as an engineer soon.

Can we please stop tacking the word "Mega" to stories on Lagos as if that suddenly makes it out of this world. ROFL

Anyways, I do have a question. Is the rice grown in Nigeria at all, let alone Lagos? Just wondering is all. grin

The Governor added that the Rice mill story started four years ago when he was sworn in to office and he was n informed that the rice production capacity of the state yearly is 30 hectares.

He added that through sustained efforts spread over two and half years, it was increased to 250 hectares, adding that government was also concerned about embarking upon strategic irrigation to keep the farm wet always.

“We resolved to do 500 hectares per annum but we were now told, if you do this, how do you process it?. So, we decided in 2011 to building this processing mill before we increase production so that there will be no wastages when we achieve increase production”.

They bought unmilled rice from Thailand and mill it in Lagos.

How dumb can you get?
Re: Lagos Unveils Mega Rice Processing Factory by ektbear: 10:54pm On May 16, 2012
It honestly doesn't matter either way. There is nothing wrong with buying raw products from elsewhere and making refined products from it.

Hell, this is what the rest of the world has done to Africa for hundreds of years...and they've made a handsome profit doing so grin

The purpose of a factory is to turn inputs into outputs. Presumably one wants to source those inputs as cheaply as possible. Sometimes the cheapest input is local, other times it is not..

Either way, doesn't matter

I also found that funny. Excluding this project, Most projects in nigeria use the words, Mega, Ultra-modern, Advanced, World-class, Revolutionary etc but when they are completed they are nothing special.

They should just stop using those words.

Is Mega not an English word with a defined meaning? Must people look for other words to use because it doesn't sound good to you? I bet it's so OK for other people but never Nigerians.

Rice is grown in nigeria and there are numerous rice Mills in other states who have been producing rice from local farms prior to this lagos mill.

This is great. I'm proud to be a Lagosian. In fact, Fashola for president grin grin

but SOCIALISM is written all over this scheme. All I can imagine is communist Russia and China.
state owned industry
cheap labor (area boys)
etc
I'm surprised that the World Bank is investing in it.

grin
whatever works but let us be careful sha. The continuous success of Lagos depends on a responsible government and i'm worried that Fashola's successor may not live up to the standard.

Yes, but nigerian newspaper tend to exaggerated things alot to sell their articles. Though this is a good project, there is no need for the mega in the title, nor is there a need for the "ultra-modern" in ultra-modern shopping mall or "World-Class" Roads. There is really nothing special or cutting edge about them and hence why I find its just weird to use words like that. To me its just a normal road and a normal shopping mall and a normal rice mill.

But why not call it MEGA if it is MEGA? MEGA as a word was created for a reason and if the reason is there, what's wrong with it? Using MEGA to describe malls and projects is nothing new and they do it everywhere. Ok it's not MEGA to you, but it is to other people so what's the big deal?

Exactly, there is no big deal, it was my Opinion. To me many of the projects that use those words are normal, to others they make be ultra-modern or mega.
Re: Lagos Unveils Mega Rice Processing Factory by Kobojunkie: 12:14am On May 17, 2012
That question I asked was really a simple one. Would the rice be just rice grown in Nigeria or in Lagos. Ofcourse rice is grown in Nigeria. . . . But is that rice milled then in Lagos? That is a question you should consider when answering the question asked.

Now, Lagos has never before now been a rice producing state really, so you could ask yourself would some that rice come from other states or even countries that share the same coast? See, there are dimensions to be considered before responding. We should be slow to concluding really.

the story DOES NOT tell us that all the rice will be grown in Lagos. I fail to see how the State which is yet to start serious growing will produce 400,000 bags this year. Asking a question really is not to get someone PUSH an answer but many times to get us all to think deeply before posting an opinion(which some more times than none, confuse as FACT) or suggest we have answers to questions yet to be answered by the concerned authorities.

You don't need to grow rice to mill it.

Any more than you need to grow raw cocoa to produce chocolate......

The location for the rice mill is a designated rice cultivation zone. It says in the article where the rice came from and they decided to build the mill because they moved from growing on 30 acres farm to 250 and they are projecting 500 acres.

It's the same dumb people and their usual re-tarded antics...

Don't get me wrong. For all I know this could be some PPP project designed to provide a central mill for rice produced in the area in and around Lagos. I do not know the particular details of the funding or the plans that have gone into this, except for what is contained in the beginning article. Also,it apparent, from many of the posts so far, that NO ONE HERE has additional details on this project either.

I simply asked a question and the usual INSECURE rats have come scampering out screaming as if someone has set fire to their behinds, as always, by simply asking questions of the source of raw material for the mill. All I have done is ask if anyone was privy to that information. So far, it seems the answer is 100% NO.
