Very insightful post.. However if there are no jobs in SA, why are people rushing there?!
There are jobs in SA mostly for science oriented and technicians .My neighbour(Nigerian) got good a job last week with good pay .Mind you he is ssce holder he has trade test certificate in refrigerator and Air conditioner services .It is not about degree now but what you can do with your hands .

Yes, jobs are few. but many people are just coming hoping they would make it. The lifestyle, the big malls as mugabe refered to it, its attracting in the eyes, but currently, jobs are hard to come by. unless you can work in the restuarant earning R2000 and tips on top, those jobs are mostly dominated by Zimbabweans.

Life is much easier and simpler, everything is by your door step, you walk to the nearest mall, cheap electricity, free clean water, free medical, social grants, if you are over 60yrs or crippled you get $150 grant every month, free house. if you have kids who are younger than 18yrs and you dont work, you can apply a grant for those kids. So people are attracted by all these.
Oga all these grants are for citizens o not foreigners ....abeg o

Thank you. What would you say is a perfect trade to learn that offers quick employment. Is setting up a classy barber's shop doable. Are studies in Web designing and other IT related discipline rewarding? In a nutshell what would you describe as essential skills needed to survive in SA? What is the typical price for a moderate self contained room. What are the easiest ways to eventually getting Permanent Residence? Which areas would you recommend for a newcomer? Are they specialised colleges that offer short courses (1 year programs) in IT..

Sorry for the many questions but a detail response would be much appreciated!

I don't know if you can get a furnished accommodation in melville/auckland park/braamfontein for a week. It's a student area, and they give it out for a year.

why not try the backpackers in melville? melville international backpackers charges R150 per night for the dorm room and R450 per night for the single room. it is usually filled with European tourists, so if you are interested, you will need to book early.. (http://coasttocoast.co.za/backpackers/melville-international-backpackers)

if you like to party, it is also close to 7th street, which is liike long street in cape town.

In Durban Nigerian based"POINT" was raided and some houses in CBD were raided, arrested and deported within 3days .The best temporary permit remains Study permit because u can handle the processing by yourself.
