In 1636, a university called the New College was established by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. By 1639, the college was as a mark of honour renamed after John Harvard, the then deceased wealthy Charlestown minister, who bequeathed half of his huge monetary estate and his very big library to the college. That was how the highly revered Harvard University came into being. Can anyone now say that the renaming of that institution after an individual diminished its status among global citadels of learning? Of course, New College despite answering an individual name today is one of the most profound and best universities in the world. |

Havard gave half his estate out unlike MKO that ranks equally with other contributor. If you ask me, Mko was a major promoter and supporter of sport and the naming of a stadium after him would have been a fair one. MKO does not deserve Unilag. Naming Unilag after MKO goes shows Gej is being wrongly adviced or is trying to score cheap political points. |

What exactly did MKO do for Unilag? You don't politicize University because the career and future of many people depends on it. Nigerian politicians are completely out of touch with what is happening to the common man. There are better things to be fighting for and not ensuring a University is renamed. The Alumni and students have expressed their disapproval with the new name, what else does the politicians want? Are they not there to serve the people? |

Apparently, u failed to notice that the university was renamed after its MAJOR BENEFACTOR just THREE YEARS after it was established and NOT FIFTY YEARS after. This argument reminds me of the silly comparisons between PMS prices in Nigeria & in other countries people were making during the early days of the subsidy removal. Sadly its this sort of warped reasoning by our policy makers that keeps driving Nigeria further into the ground. Look for something else to justify or support MAULAG. Of which, by the tym the senate throws the bill out (hopefully) & it is used to wrap roasted plantain and corn, there'll be no further need for debate. Thank you. |

afam4eva: @OP Actually, the philanthropist late Abiola was, it is very very likely he would have contributed financially to UNILAG. But it doesnt change the fact that the school should not have been renamed without due consultation from all stakeholders. Obviously, stakeholders would have rejected the name change, had they been consulted, but they have good reasons for rejecting it & their wish should be respected. I guess thats part of the hallmarks of democracy, a concept which many of our leaders unfortunately lack understanding about. Oh, well, they rigged elections to come in anywy, so they are only answerable to the people who ''fixed'' and supported their (s)election. |

So name change is the latest distraction on ground now-- see sensible nairalanders mouthing all over the place, we have the financial/oil & gas sectors still reeling from recent revelations of corruption that will continue to affect generations long after ours, we have terrorists living among us, we have insecurity and all we talk about is MAULAG and UNILAG..  |
