Senate Approves UNILAG Renaming by LailaIkeji1: 2:52pm On Jun 07, 2012 |
Against public opinion and massive criticisms, the Nigerian Senate has approved the renaming of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to the Moshood Abiola University (MAU). In a report gathered by Ascology News, the Senate approved the renaming bill which was sent earlier in the week by President Goodluck Jonathan to bypass any embarrassing rejection of the name-change in what many Nigerians saw as illegal and unconstitutional. http://ascology.com/news/local-news/25171-Senate-approves-UNILAG-renaming.html |

So how did they vote? Who voted for and who voted against? Also, can the Senate by itself amend an act of the national Assembly without a vote by The house of representatives? I thought Senate + House of Reps = National Assembly, No? Anyway, for those who are interested, below is the link to vote and proceedings on the HOA site, it has not been updated since February though, maybe we can get some detailed info from reporters covering the house. http://www.nassnig.org/nass/votesenate.php |

onthefence: Without amending the Act establishing Unilag? Now the National Assembly will be joined in the suit at the Fed High Court. Be informed. The passage is the amendment to your so-called 'Act establishing Unila'. And the amendment is a minor amendment to the bill. Its just an amendment in the short title of the bill. That is where many of you protesting and shouting due process got it all wrong. In this sort of amendment, there is no public hearing. Its just one thing that can be done with in just one legislative sitting, except it is not popular with every members. But unfortunately, most of you undermine the intelligence of GEJ and he beat you all to it by presenting 2 other bills alongside the one of UNILAG. These two other bills seek the same thing, and they are popular with members. It will be extremely out of place to pass the other 2 bills without passing the MAULAG bill. As to the court, the court does not operate on emotion or popular opinion, it operates based on fact of the matter. Besides, court interpret the law and does not initiate or make a law. So go back to your school, when you collect your certificate with MAULAG on it, look for a tippex, erase MAULAG and write UNILAG. Simple as A B C. 32 Likes |

The story isn't complete. They forgot to inform us how many filled ghana must go bags they received from from the executives. Nigerians biggest problem is we don't Judge fairly. We put sentiments in every treatment and judgement we made. 99% of the people shouting MAULAG,MALU, MAU and the rest are definitely not in support of Jonathan's actions. We only feel joyed that the supposed pompous attitude of unilag students have been cut short by that name change. This will surely make way for many more ridiculous policy change by this government. National Monuments, Stadia, road, bridges, public holiday and even Name of States and Local governments would be changed in no time by this government. If a school like Uniben, Ilorin or Ibadan had their names changes I believe the "entire" populace would have kicked against this clueless actions. Nigerians! Open youe ears clearly. God is already upset with this Nation. The disasters occuring in this country of late are only a warning sign. The earlier we start speaking the truth and treating people and situations fairly irrespective of Status, ethnic or religious background the better for all of us. 2 Likes |
